DESPERATE PLIGHT (Travails Of a hero ) [completed] Season 1

Jane’s household was up to the neck in it’s hectic routine monday morning chaos. She was up at the first c--k crow and still running around, trying to get one or two things done.

Her fifteen year old daughter, Ella, had swept the surroundings and brushed her teeth but for some odd reasons decided to put the tip of the toothbrush in one of the holes on her hair net which covered her braided hair.

Emmy, her eleven year old son, who should have been up and brushing his teeth was still in his room.

“This children can make someone go crazy in the morning,” She muttered to herself as she walked to her son’s room to call him a second time. She should have just called his name out loud but decided not to disturb her husband who was still sleeping.
But it looked as if her son knew what was coming, so he quickly ran out of his room and collided with the mum in the corridor.

“Emmy!” Jane called out. “So you actually wanted me to come and call you a second time, right?” She asked.


“Goodmorning mum, you shouldn’t have bothered coz am always sharp,” Emmy chuckled, pecked her lightly on the cheek and ran past her to the dining room.

“Naughty boy, I give you only ten minutes to get ready,” the mum called after him, then turned and headed to the kitchen to check what her daughter was doing…

IN THE KITCHEN

Jane walked into the kitchen without a smile on her face.

The daughter who stood infront of the cooker, frying eggs turned to her, “Mum! Why the frown?” She asked with a smile.

“You should have added some more onions to the egg, you know it’s bread,” the mother said instead thus ignoring her question, then stretched out her right hand to get the frying spoon from her.

The daughter handed the spoon to her and stepped aside, “We don’t like too much onions in our egg,” She said.


“Go and get dressed for school,” the mother said as she picked up a plate from the counter to turn the egg inside.

“Yes ma,” Ella snapped in authority and turned to leave.

“As for that toothbrush on your hair, you think I will ask you to remove it,” the mother indirectly queried.

Ella giggled and removed the toothbrush. “You are indirectly asking me to remove it mum,” She said and walked out of the kitchen.

“Naughty children,” Jane said in a whisper and dropped the frying pan on the cooker. Then she started singing quietly to herself as she arranged everything on the tray with the tea cups…

IN THE DINING ROOM

Richard walked into the dining room with a newspaper in his hand and glasses on his eyes. “Emmy, Ella!” he called out with a smile to his children who came running into the dining to meet him.

“Goodmorning dad,” Emmy and Ella greeted as they hugged their father briefly, then pulled out the chair from under the dining table and sat down, waiting eagerly for breakfast.

“Why do you two always turn this house to a concert hall every morning,” the father asked still standing with the newspaper behind his back.

“Good question!” the wife retorted as she emerged from the corridor with a large tray which contained saucers, coffee filled cups and a large bowl that the fried egg was inside and placed it on the dining table.

Emmy and Ella gave a chuckle of delight as they turned and glanced at each other.

The father smiled, dropped the newspaper on the edge of the table and stretched out to pull out the seat for the wife to seat on.

“Mum!” Ella smiled gleefully as she stood up to dish out the egg into the saucers while Emmy stood up to get the bread from the storage that stood a little distance from the refrigerator. “My brother has a blockage in his ears, can’t you see,” She said and started picking out the saucer of egg one after the other to place infront of everyone.

Inspite of her frown, Jane managed a little smile, “And you what do you have in your ear?” she asked.

“Ah mum!” Emmy exclaimed as he walked and sat back on his chair, then dropped the big loaf of bread on the table. “Thank you,” he laughed.

“It’s not funny,” Ella frowned as sat down and picked out her cup of coffee from the tray.

The father smiled, “Don’t mind them, pass me my coffee,” he requested while Ella did as she was told.

“Thank God dad is home now, it will now be two against two,” Ella said and smiled again.

The father swallowed hard while the mother turned to stare at him with the look of “It will be hard for you to travel this time.”

“It’s alright, hurry up so you won’t be late for school,” the mother said instead thus changing the topic. The General had called her husband the night before to inform him of the war ahead and that had made her worried throughout the night and also the reason why she wasn’t smiling all through the morning…

An hour later, after the wife had left with the children, Richard was seen seated on the couch in his sitting room, thinking of how he was going to tell his children about his sudden travel again…
