DESPERATE PLIGHT (Travails Of a hero ) - Season 1 - Episode 4

Richard sat speechless as he watched his wife get up and walk glumly out of the sitting room. He really wished he could do something but unfortunately, his hands were tight, very tight.

“Dad, why are you always bent on making us sad especially mum, she cries a lot each time you travel,” Emmy complained and leaned on him.

“Yes dad, we always miss you so much,” Ella concurred.

“I know my children but I wish I could do something,” the father said.

“Promise us one thing,” Ella requested and unfolded her arms.

“What sweetheart?”

“How many weeks will you stay?” Emmy asked instead.

“Just fourteen days,” the father said, trying to smile to ease off the tension that had hung over them like a man in a parachute waiting to drop down.

“Two weeks!” Ella and Emmy shouted in unison.

Richard dreaded moments like this, he prayed they understand him. “Yes!” he said calmly.

“Two weeks sounds just like two years dad but not to worry, Emmy and I will take very good care of mum and we’ll also be visiting grandma and Pa,” Ella smiled a bit and leaned back on his arm.

“Thanks cuties, so what’s it that you wanted me to promise you?” the father asked as he stretched out his left hand and placed it on the daughter’s shoulder.

Ella turned to Emmy and smiled, “Promise you will never forget us.”

Richard smiled broadly, “I promise dearies, I will never forget my jewels.”

“Thanks dad, you’re the best,” the children said in unison as they smiled and embraced him tightly…

NOBLE’S SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

Raymond paced patiently round the hospital reception while his friend Mike kept trying to calm him down. He had been called thirty minutes after Thelma had left by the hospital management to inform him of Thelma’s condition.

“You shouldn’t have treated her that way,” Mike complained bitterly.

“Yes but I was angry,” Raymond said bitterly, then walked to the settee and sat down while Mike also joined him.

“That doesn’t justify your actions, you should try to understand her,” Mike said shrilly.

“I just wish she’d sustain some injuries coz according to her helpers, the accident wasn’t serious,” Raymond said foolishly.

Mike was taken aback, “Can you just listen to your stupid self?” he retorted. “How can you say such?”

“Because if she sustains some injuries, they Army General will have no choice than to replace her,” Raymond cooed.

“You are just a lowlife fowl,” Mike spat in annoyance and stood up. Just then, the doctor walked in and the quickly rushed to him.

“Doctor, how’s she?” they both asked in unison.

“Oh! Fine, she sustained some minor injuries which has been treated, you can now go in and see her, second ward by your left,” the doctor said and walked past them.

Mike turned and eyed Raymond angrily, “Ill omen,” he hissed and walked angrily into the long corridor.

Raymond sighed and shook his head negatively, “Sometimes I just wonder if Thelma is my fiance or yours,” he muttered to himself and followed him…

FAST FORWARD
WONDERLAND HIGH SCHOOL

Ella sat on her desk with her head bent in her classroom, thinking about her father. It’s just two days since he’d travelled but yet her mum was drowned in so much sorrow and looked pale like one who’s husband is dead.

She raised her head and picked up her school bag, then opened it and brought out a picture of she and her dad when she was young and placed it on her chest, then stared into the space as memories came flashing back to her brain.

“Oh God, I heard the war is between our country and the most powerful country, Please protect my father,” she prayed silently as tear drops fell from her eyes.

“Ella,” Joy called out tapping her shoulder lightly thus making her startle as she looked up and saw her three friends who had surrounded her desk
“Why are you crying?” Prisca asked with concern written all over her face.

“Me! Crying?” Ella asked and touched her wet face. “Oh something must have flown into my eyes,” She said and cleaned her eyes hoping they’d just go away.

“You’re crying because of your father, right?” Tessy asked and sat down on a locker beside her’s.

“Don’t worry, though many people normally die in wars but I believe your dad will come back alive,” Joy said soothingly.

“Yes, your dad will come back alive,” Prisca concurred while Tessy nodded and touched her cheek.

“I pray and hope so,” Ella said with uncertainty as she put back the picture in her school bag.

“Just cheer up, remember it’s break period and we need to be in the library,” Prisca smiled.

Ella smiled a bit and sniffed, “Let me lock my desk and I’ll come with you.”
“Alright be fast…”

Minutes later She and her friends were seen walking along the path that led to the library, gisting and laughing. For a moment, Ella forgot about her family problem and laughed along with her friends not knowing that a terrible blow awaited her in the days to come…
