” What the…” I cried, struggling away from him. ” What’s the big idea?”

” Sorry,” he quickly got to his feet. ” I’m Soo sorry. You’re not hurt are you?”

Dusting myself off the dirt from the floor, I noticed the bruises on my elbow.

” I think so.”

” Jeepers,” he held my arm. ” Let me take a look.”

He was Soo near his perfume reached my nose. I took my time to look him over.

He was tall, no doubt about that but that wasn’t what got my attention.

It was his hair. He had round afro hair that looked old school but modern. His face was long and broad and beardless. My eyes went down to his neck which bore a silver chain necklace.

He looked older for his age. I later got to learn he was just 17 years old.

” It’s pretty bad,” he let go of my hand and stood back. ” I’m Soo sorry about that. Why don’t I take you to a pharmacy store and get it attended to?”

” Oh don’t bother,” I nursed my elbow. ” Like I Said, it’s not that bad.”

” But I insist,” he walked passed me to where his skateboard laid in a damaged heap. ” Sh!t, Fred is goin’ kill me for this.”

” Who’s Fred?” I asked, not knowing why I asked but knowing I had to say something.

” A friend,” he stood to his feet, deflated at the loss of the skateboard. There was no way he’s ever going to fix that. ” It doesn’t matter anymore. I’ll have to pay for the skateboard.”

” Hey, don’t stress yourself,” I said. ” It was an accident. If he’s sensible enough, I’m sure he’ll understand.”

He shook his head as if trying to get his mind off the skateboard. ” I don’t suppose he is that sensible. Let’s forget about the skateboard, how about I take you to—”

” I’ll be fine,” I said Sharply. ” It’s just a bruise.”

He looked sad and worried. ” It’s all my fault. I should’ve been more cautious. Alright, since you won’t go to a pharmacy store, come over to my place. I have a first aid kit. I’ll fix it. You have no idea if that bruise could get infected.”

I don’t want to follow this stranger anywhere. Somehow, I have an idea we live in the same neighborhood in this estate. I stared at my bruise. It wasn’t much of a bruise but I needed to get it fixed else It’d get infected by bacteria.

” Alright,” I said. ” Lead the way.”

He smiled and waved his hand to a direction. ” Ladies first.”

I moved ahead of him and he followed beside me at a distance that I was comfortable with.

” Say,” he was staring at me from the corner of his eyes. ” You look familiar. I can’t seem to put my hands on it. Have we by any chance met?”

I looked at the skateboard, then at him. ” Yeah, I guess so. You’re the boy from the night I arrived from school.”

He stiffened, turning to look me closely. ” Yeah, yeah, that’s correct. Now I remembered. You’re Mr Benjamin’s daughter, I get?”

” He’s my stepdad.”

” Wow,” he didn’t make an attempt to cover up the distance between us. ” We’re neighbors. I live right opposite you.”

” We are?” I was surprised. ” I never knew.”

” Charlotte must be your step sister then,” he laughed. ” She’s the most craziest driver I’ve ever seen and that tattoo on her hands… she’s a different specie of girls.”

We ended up talking about Charlotte until we were stepping into his house.

He was right. We lived right opposite each other but how was it I don’t see him often?

I gave one brief look at my house before getting inside his. Apparently, Charlotte was still in her room.

” Mom and dad are gone for a wedding trip,” he said, ushering me in. ” I live alone…well, for now. Have a seat.”

I looked around the room, impressed by the wealth of his parents. Although I had something more luxurious at home, this guy’s home was out of the world. It was Soo homey and lonely.

I took a seat on the chaise lounge and waited for him.

He dropped the damaged skateboard by the doorside, approaching me. ” What’d you like? I’m sorry I don’t cook much but if you’re hungry, I can order some—”

” That’s nice but I’ve had a heavy breakfast,” I lied.

” How about a drink?” He offered, walking towards an inbuilt fridge perfectly fixed by the wall side. ” Juice? Wine?”

I’ve read of guys who drug girls and rape them. I wasn’t going to fall victim to that. ” I’m fine.”

He must’ve sensed my fears for he brought a chilled packet of juice with two glasses. He opened the new packet and poured into the two glasses.

Before my very eyes, he drank from the glass and smiled at me. ” It wouldn’t do to reject a drink from me. As you can see, I have no bad intentions towards you.”

I didn’t know what made me do it but I took my glass and took a sip. Somehow, I trusted him even as a stranger.

” We haven’t gotten to the what’s–your–name part. I’m Damian what’s yours?”

We we’re staring at each other and there was that racing I felt in my heart.

” Lucy.”

” Lucy?”

” Charlotte calls me lil sis, my mom calls me Lucy, at school, everyone calls me little Lucy.”

He showed his teeth. ” Wow so what should I call you?”

” Anything you like.”

” How about I call you lil Lucy?”

I was intrigued. ” So you’re conjoining my step sister’s nickname for me with yours, huh?”

He laughed, rising up to his feet. ” Well, I kinda liked the “little Lucy” part but I guess lil Lucy sounds way much cooler.”

He was a breed of boys I’ve forgotten a long time ago. Now it’s all coming back to me. How long had I spoken to a boy this up close? I couldn’t tell.

” Almost forgot,” he walked away. ” The first aid kit. I’ll be back in a jiffy, lil Lucy.”

He left me, taking the kitchen door. I adjusted myself on the chaise lounge, inspecting my bruises.

It seemed uncanny how I’d bumped into this guy hours after I’ve been to the beach.

I remembered my prayers for a sign in Making me change. I also remembered that heart racing feeling I got when our eyes jammed.

The only person in the world that’s ever made me feel that way was Collette. Sylvia nearly succeeded but this guy brought it back in full force.

What is this feeling?

I know I’m always feeling things. I’m a girl with emotions. I’m sensitive, I’m crazy, I’m b!tchy too but when it comes to feelings for a boy, I’m immuned to it. Ever since Collette happened, boy’s were dead to me until today.

Damian returned with a first aid kit. He settled down next to me. ” Now this might hurt a bit but it’s goin’ keep you safe from infection.”

I gave him my arm and he began treating the bruises.

” You’re an only child?” I asked.

He looked up at me then following my eyes, he darted them to the large picture frame of his parents having him in the middle.

He returned his eyes back to my arm. ” Yes.”

” That’s nice.”

” Nice?”

” Why not?” I pointed at myself. ” I’m also an only child but ever since my mom met Benjamin, my stepdad, I have to share two sisters.”

He looked interested in my sisters and he inquired about them. I told him about Collette and Charlotte.

He was shocked Charlotte was a twin. ” You don’t say,” he was smiling. ” Never knew “crazy driver” had a twin sister.”

I laughed. It was my first laugh with a boy. ” Is that your nickname for Charlotte?”

” Crazy driver?” He nodded, frowning. ” She’s popular along the express way. Always driving at hair raising speed, sneaking out to parties at night, always getting drunk. She’s trouble. Once she’d been escorted home by a speed cop for over speeding.”

This surprised me. I never knew everyone saw Charlotte that way.

“But I guess this Collette, her twin must be an entirely different person,” Damian said. ” I don’t like Charlotte. She’s too creepy.”

” I couldn’t have agreed with you more,” I drew my hands back right after he was done. ” Thanks for this. I appreciate it.”

” Nothing to it,” he closed the first aid kit, rising to his feet.

We stared at each other again.

The silence was soo awkward I decided to break it. ” Umm…I think I’d better be going now.”

” Sure,” he seemed glad. ” I’ll walk you home.”

And that was how Damian and I walked across his house to mine. We stopped before my door and faced each other.

” Sorry about your skateboard,” I said, trying to avoid another awkward silence between us again.

He dug his hands in his pockets and showed his teeth. ” I can afford it. I’m more concerned about your elbow.”

” Perfect,” I raised my elbow so he could see it clearly. ” Thanks to you.”

” How about we exchange numbers or social media usernames.”

I had no idea what suddenly came into me. ” I Don’t have a phone.”

He made a face, pointing at my phone in my pocket. ” What is that then?”

” It belongs to Charlotte,” I lied.

His face fell.

” You’re not on any social media platforms?”

I shook my head. ” No I’m not.”

” Geez,” he scratched the back of his afro hair. ” What about a phone number?”

” I can give you Charlotte’s number if you like.”

He grimaced. ” Let’s leave Charlotte out of this. I don’t like her.”

I laughed a little. ” I still live around here. You’re going to see more of me this holiday. ”

Damian shrugged. ” Well, if you insist. Goodbye, lil Lucy.” He stretched forth his hand. ” It’s nice knowing you. ”

I took his hand and he squeezed them a little harder. ” And you too, Damian.”

I watched him run across the road to the other side of his house.

What a strange boy. I pushed the door handle of my home and walked in.

The moment I stepped foot inside the house, someone’s voice boomed over to me sharply.

” Who is he, Lucy?!”

I turned around, feeling jumpy as I saw Charlotte sitting on the staircase, eyes staring straight at me.

” Charlotte,” I clutched at my chest. ” you scared the living daylight out of me. What’er you looking like that for?”

Her eyes searched mine. ” Who is he?”

” Who is who?”

” The boy you went to his house.”

Spider legs ran up my spine. ” H–how how did you know?”

” I saw you two,” her eyes were hard and glittering. ” Now tell me, who is he?”

” Damian.”

” Damian?”

” Yes,” my voice was going low. ” We happened to bump into each other on my way back from the beach. You see, I went to the beach to go clear my head. I happened to have a little accident with Damian. His skateboard was damaged and I got bruises on my elbow but he fixed my elbow up real quick.”

Charlotte listened attentively without interruption. When I was done, she relaxed a bit. ” So you’re friends with Damian now?”

I said I suppose so.

She nodded. ” Keep it that way. I’m glad you’re gradually getting yourself involved with boys but be smart about it. Stay as friends. Don’t take anything far between you two.”

” I will,” I said, heading over to her. I stopped before the staircase and looked up at her. ” Actually, Chole, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”

She brought out a can of beer from behind her and opened it. ” Let me guess, it’s about our talk earlier this morning, eh?”

I nodded. ” I’ve been thinking really hard over what you said. I must say, I admit I’ve been gross, checking out other girls, getting myself involved more in my addiction. You are right about most of the things you said. I still have my beliefs and doubts of what I am. Still, I have decided to move forward. I’m ready to quit my lifestyle. Earlier this morning, I left for the beach cause I’m trying to stay focused on what I want. I have many needs as a fast growing teenager. I just need an out. I just need somebody. I just need some love. I’m prone to many things, Chole. My emotions is one of my weaknesses. I wasn’t like this before. I was changed into what I am now. I loved what I am because it made me happy. I found someone I loved, I found all my needs completely satisfied. Being apart from the one I love made me crazy which drove me seeking for some form of consolation. I shouldn’t have done that but the truth was going to come out one way or the other.”

I paused to catch my breath. Charlotte stared at me without saying a word. The beer can hanged in her hand and I saw a tiny drop of cold water rolled off the can to the floor.

” At the beach today, I asked for a sign,” I continued. ” I wanted to know if it were worth it being what I am. If it were possible to change. If I can ever find someone else in the opposite s£x good enough to satisfy my needs. My answers came. I think I just met the sign I requested for.”

Charlotte moved her lips but no words came out.

” I think,” I looked down at my feet. ” I think… Damian is my sign.”

Charlotte watched me for sometime, her eyes watchful, her mind running with thoughts. Then she drank from her beer. She stood to her feet and walked towards where I stood.

” I don’t know what to say to you, lil sis,” her mouth stank of alcohol as she approached me. ” But I’m gonna be honest with you; follow your heart. But use your head. Your heart is meant to pump blood, your head is meant to guide your heart. I’m happy you’ve gotten your sign. It is my greatest wish Collette finds a guy too. No matter what it is you believe in, start working on it. I’ll guide you. This Damian, I don’t really know much about him except we’re neighbors. If we’re going to cure you of your insatiable desire for your own gender, then we have to take it to the next level.”

I looked up at her, she was close to me and I had that familiar feeling of Collette’s presence in the room. I fought against it but I failed.

” What do you mean the next level?” I asked.

Charlotte’s eyes turned to the wall clock. She smiled. ” I’m going to help you, like sis. This may sound crazy but it’s just about the only way to cure your same s£x problems. Are you willing to change?”

I passed my tongue across my lips. ” Yes, I want to change.”

I sounded undecided. My voice told me so.

Charlotte brought out her phone and gave it to me. ” I overheard you two while you both were at the door. You refused to give him your number, didn’t you?”

” Yes,” I replied, collecting her phone. ” I didn’t see it necessary to give him my number. Since we just met today.”

Charlotte was impressed. ” That’s good but we’re going to switch to a more direct move. Now listen, lil sis, I want to help you. This thing eating you up is deep. Only a boy can help you as well with some little will power from yourself.”

She paused, sipping from her can. ” I want you to go out tomorrow again. Get seen by Damian. You two should probably struck up a conversation or anything but at the end, I want you giving him my number. You’re gonna have to pretend that’s your number for the meantime.”

I was surprised. ” Why?”

” Because,” she emptied the beer and tossed it to a waste bin nearby. ” You’re going to ask him out on a date.”

I stiffened. ” Ask Damian out on a date? But I thought you said–”

” I know I said you should remain friends but that’s not going to cut it. You’ve only experienced romance from your own s£x. You have to experience romance from a boy. It has nothing to do with s£x. You and Damian are going to start off in a relationship. The moment you start dating a boy, it’d crowd out everything that’s ever occupied your mind towards your own gender.
