I held my knife behind my back, staring up at Mr Adam as he taught me some problems in mathematics.

” Where do you have troubles with algebra?” Mr Adam asked.

I was seated opposite him, watching as he fixed the back of his pen to his under lips, studying a problem in my textbook.

” I’m good with algebra,” I answered, holding on tightly to my knife, certain to conceal it perfectly from his view.

He gave me a blank look. Then tore out a sheet of paper and wrote some maths problems for me. He gave me the paper and waited.

” Solve these.”

One look at the ten maths questions he’d given me and I raised an eyebrow.

I’ve learnt all these stuff from QA. At QA, we mix questions from different classes. These stuff was a piece of cake.

In under five minutes, I was done and dusted.

I returned the paper back to Mr Adam and waited.

Surprised, he took the sheet of papers and glanced through it.

His eyes met mine. ” Where did you learn these?”

I nearly jeered at him. ” Queens Academy.”

He leaned back on his seat and watched me closely. ” Queens Academy?”

” It’s an all girl’s school,” I explained.

He had that probing look in his eyes but he was indifferent. ” Is that right?”

I nodded. ” We mix subjects.”

He regarded me for a while. ” That’s nice. So why are you homeschooling? You could’ve returned back to school. From what I’m gathering the school must be an incredible place for learning.”

I shrugged. ” Mom just wanted me to be home schooled, I guess.”

He made no expression but the looks in his eyes told me I wasn’t fooling him a bit.

” Alright, solve this.”

He gave me more questions to solve, I solved them all without trouble.

He was surprised at how far I had gone and yet he was impressed. I was beginning to loosen up to this man.

But that didn’t mean I didn’t keep my guard. The knife behind my back was still there.

The day’s lesson moved smoothly until it was time we took a break.

Mr Adams remained at the dining table, sending a text message to someone. While he did that, I excused myself to my room and locked myself there.

Too many thoughts ran through my mind.

Why hasn’t he stared anything yet? He’s texting someone. Does that means he’s also calling more men into the house?

Whatever it was he was doing, I was prepared to abort his plans.

Picking up my phone, I placed a call across to Damian.

Luckily Damian hadn’t resumed school yet. I had waved at him earlier this morning while he watered the garden.

Placing the receiver to my ear, I waited for Damian to pick my call.

” Hey, what’s up?” Damian’s voice broke into my ear.

” Damian, you home?”

His voice returned back to me. ” Sure, love. Got a problem?”

” Yeah,” I walked over to my window and stared across the road at Damian’s house. ” Can you step outside please?”

It didn’t take a second. Damian was standing outside his house. His eyes went up and jammed mine.

He waved at me and I waved back.

” I see you, Lucy,” he smiled, watching me dreamily. ” What now?”

It was crazy but I told him what’s going on. I told him about Mr Adam and my fears of getting raped.

Damian listened without interrupting, his face blank and expressionless. I could tell his mind was calculating.

” I’m scared, Damian,” I cried. ” What if he brings in more men into the house.”

” Lucy, can you please relax?”

” Don’t tell me to relax,” I snapped at my phone. ” Do you have any idea how uncomfortable it feels to be alone with a man of his stature and looks?”

Damian was walking across the road to my house. ” I don’t know what to say about this dude but if your mother recommends him to teach you, I believe you should trust him.”

” I don’t trust him!”

” Like I said, Lucy,” Damian wiped his face with his palm. ” You’ve got to relax. You might be worrying yourself over nothing. This dude may be harmless and innocent.”

” I hope he is,” I said quietly, holding my knife in my hand. ” Else I’ll strike him dead with my knife.”

Damian’s voice became urgent. ” Don’t try anything stupid, dear. You don’t want to kill a breadwinner of a family, do you?”

” What if he—”

” He won’t try such,” Damian said and I saw him hiding behind the bushy hedge near the living room window. ” I’ll be here. If anything goes wrong, scream or throw something out the window.”

It felt good to know Damian was looking out for me. It meant I wasn’t alone. He was there for me. What more could I possibly ask for?

” I’ll do just that,” I answered, smiling to myself. ” Thanks Damian.”

Ending the call, I went downstairs to continue my lesson.

When I got downstairs, I was met with shock. My hairs stood at edge causing me to get cold all of a sudden.

Lying on the dinning table were all the knives I’ve hidden inside the sofas. Even the ones under the table was removed and placed on the table before my very eyes.

Mr Adams sat on his chair, studying his book, a frown on his face.

When he noticed my presence, he slowly looked up and fixed me a cold look that froze me to my bone marrow.

” There you are, Lucy,” he said softly but his eyes were hard and hostile. ” Was just waiting for you to return. Can you please have a seat? I want a word with you.”

My eyes immediately went over to the spot I had hidden my camera.

I was greeted with another shock when I saw my camera missing.

My heart began pounding Soo hard I feared it would tear out of my chest.

This was a jam, I was trapped here with a psycho. How the hell had he guessed where I’d hidden my knives and the camera?

My hands held tightly to the knife behind my back as I took some steps back.

Mr Adams watched me closely. ” I’m not going to repeat myself, Lucy. Have a seat.”

” No,” my voice quavered away from him.

Mr Adams remained where he sat, surveying me from head to toes.

” You don’t have to be afraid of me, Lucy. I’m not going to hurt you.”

” Yeah,” I nearly laughed. ” That’s definitely the last thing on your mind, isn’t it?”

I eyed the window near the edge and saw Damian watching the scene with interest.

My legs were going backwards up the stairs towards my room.

Mr Adams must’ve sensed my plan for he stood up. I thought for once, he was going to make a mad dash for me.

But he didn’t do that. Instead, he began packing his books back into his briefcase.

I was surprised. I was expecting the worse treatment from him but here he was packing up.

Once he was done, he brought out his phone and made some calls. We stared at each other in silence until he finally got who he was calling on the line.

” Yeah, Mrs Oliver?” He called. ” Yeah it’s me, Mr Adams.”

I gazed at him, shocked he was speaking to my mom.

His eyes were Soo hostile it gave me the creeps but I had to be silent as he poured out his aggression into the phone.

” Mrs Oliver, I think your daughter wants to kill me,” Mr Adams said, frowning at me. ” While on break, I was vigilant enough to notice some node shaped like figures on your chairs. I brought them out and they were all knives.”

I could hear mom catching her breath. ” Oh my goodness.”

Mr Adams Continued. ” I’m taking my leave this instant, Mrs. Oliver Be sure to attend to her when you get back. I don’t suppose I’d want to be her home teacher anymore. I don’t want to get killed. If I wanted to die, I know exactly where bandits are. I have a wife and two kids to feed. Thank you very much Mrs Oliver.”

Before mom could stop him, he had hanged up and turning to me with a frown on his face, he began walking away towards the door.

That was when I realized… I fúcked up!”

If mom get home….if mom gets home she’ll skin me alive. What logical explanation would I give her in the excuse of saying why I wanted to kill my home teacher.

If I don’t do something about this quick, I’d suffer and you don’t want to get on mom’s bad side. She can be crazy when she gets angry.

Without knowing where the energy or the will came From, I bolted towards Mr Adams, screaming my throat out.

” Don’t go!!!”

He was about reaching for the door handle when he felt me grabbing his legs, my knees Falling on the hard floor as I pleaded with tears in my eyes.

He looked down to see me crying as I pulled at his legs, pleading with all my heart.

The tears were fake though but my pleas were real.

” Please sir,” I faked more tears. ” Please Mr Adams, don’t go I beg of you. Believe me, I wasn’t trying to kill you. Can you just….give me a chance to explain.”

I was aware Damian was outside my window watching me closely but I didn’t mind.

I cried more and more, holding on to Mr Adams legs to stop him from leaving.

I’ve got to fix this mess. I even forgotten about my wrong impression of him being a rapist.

Mr Adams glared at me for sometime then he reached forward and wiped my tears with a finger.

When I opened my eyes and glanced up, he was looking down at me, his face expressionless.

He gently raised me up to my feet until I was standing on my full height. Every movement was slow and steady as if he had planned it all.

His eyes held mine until I couldn’t bear to look at him anymore and he spoke.

” Let’s go over to the dinning table and talk things over, shall we?”

Mr Adams sat opposite me, eyes watchful as I narrated my rape ordeals to him.

He held a glass of juice in one hand while his other hand stroked his chin as if he was playing chess.

I held nothin back from this man. I told him about Collette, I told him about QA, I told him everything.

I have absolutely no idea if it was the right thing to do, talking to this stranger about my deepest secret but his eyes were Soo kind and hypnoticing I couldn’t help myself.

I felt I could trust him.

It’s funny how this was the same guy I had intentions of Killing in self defense about an hour ago.

Looking at him now, he looked way harmless and cool you’d thought he’d never hurt a fly.

When I was done, it was few minutes passed three o’clock.

Mr Adams gently dropped his glass of juice and leaned forward, studying me closely.

I looked into those kind eyes, unable to bring down my gaze because he held them tight. Then he began speaking.

” That’s a very sad story, Lucy,” he said softly but I felt a bitterness in that voice. ” I’m Soo sorry for your ràpe experience. It’s not something I’d wish for my enemies. I have a little daughter at home and I can imagine the trauma I’d be through if she gets raped.”

He paused, giving himself time to pick his words. ” Well, as for your attraction to girls and your relationship with your stepsister well….you kinda remind me of myself.”

This was interesting. I spoke sharply, “Is that so?”

He frowned at the memory. ” Yes it is. I wouldn’t like to be reminded of my past but since we’re having this conversation, I’d very much like to address it by telling you the story of my life.”

I took my glass of water and drank from it, wetting my already dry throat. ” I’m listening, sir.”

Mr Adams leaned back on his seat, crossing his legs as he regarded me. ” Promise me this will be between the both of us. Your mom and I have been good friends but a friend must always have secrets. I don’t go around spreading the story of my past youth. The only person who knows about my past is my wife and of course, Katelyn.”

” Who’s Katelyn?”

That’s when Mr Adams smiled. ” She was my junior student back then at high school.”

I waited, certain he was about telling me the story of his life.

He began immediately. ” You see, I was a young man with a great ambition to become a teacher. While growing up, I had this great childhood friend whom I care about Soo much. Her name was Violet. I was many years older than she was but it didn’t matter cause we were great friend. Eventually, I got admission to study abroad and abandoned her. I hadn’t the time to even say goodbye. While doing my studies, I met a man.”

This was where I held my breath.

Mr Adams Continued. ” It was the first time I fell in love with someone. We became lovers.”

I exclaimed. ” Holy fúck!!! For real? You make love with your fellow man?!”

The frown that followed after on his face told me I talked too much. I immediately apologized.

” I’m sorry, carry on.”

He stopped stroking his beard and began rubbing the back of his wrist, staring at nothing in particular.

” I never saw anything wrong in our relationship because I was crazily in love with him. But he wasn’t faithful. He always cheated on me with other women. As crazy as it sounds, it hurts me deeply to see him date other women and me as well. It was after I caught him pants down with a woman that I realized my mistakes. I took a flight back home to clear my head. The moment I stepped back in Africa, my cultural heritage and parental upbringing haunts me. I suddenly realized I had been wrong in dating my fellow man. I wanted to Change. I met with a bishop, I watched p--n but my attraction for women ceased. I couldn’t get a hard-on over a woman anymore.”

” That’s bad,” I said.

He nodded. ” But after flying back into the country, I decided I was going to change for the better. I returned back to my Homeland and became a maths teacher. My childhood friend and I happened to run into each other in the same school. It was crazy how we got along. She was mad at me for abandoning her but she later came around and we became best friends again. But times have changed. I was her teacher, she was my student. A man of my looks attracted lots of girls at school. One of these girls is Katelyn. Katelyn was séxually abused by her stepfather. She leaned on me for help but she was also in love with me. I confessed I had no such feelings for her. I told her I was gay. Katelyn felt hurt and tried to kill herself. I saved her life and got her stepdad arrested. To cut the long story short, she’s married to a prince in Ghana.”

” And what about Violet?” I asked.

” I came to realize she was the only woman I have feelings for,” Mr Adams answered. ” I could get a hard-on whenever I was with her. I never felt gay anymore. I became straight the day I married her.”

” Wow, she’s your wife?”

He nodded. ” Yeah, she’s my wife. I married my childhood friend after she graduated from the University. She owns her own business. But I wasn’t easy, I can assure you. Flying back to complete do master degree, I ran into my ex but I had decided never to have anything to do with him anymore. We had a big fight and seperated. I only had one person in mind when I flew back to the States. And that person was Violet.”

This was a very intriguing story. I couldn’t get enough of it. ” Was that how you changed?”

” Exactly,” he cocked his head to a side. ” Anyone can change, Lucy. It took me a hell of a time to accept my mistakes. The day I married my wife was the happiest day of my life. Now, we’re blessed with two beautiful foster twins. This is the story of my life. You see, Lucy. You and I are more alike than you think. We both loved someone soo dearly but it’s a taboo and since it’s a taboo it makes it pretty difficult to change.”

He was right. He was definitely right. I couldn’t have agreed more with him.

I smiled as I looked away. ” Can I say something, Mr Adams?”

He nodded. ” I’m listening.”

” There’s this boy,” my eyes were glancing over at the window where Damian was watching us with prickled ears. ” Ever since my steps sister and I parted ways, I’ve been involved with him. The other day, I got my first kiss from a boy. It was magical, like nothing I’ve ever felt before. We’re currently dating now but we’ve agreed to keep our relationship a healthy one—no séx. Do you think it would work out? Dating this boy is something new to me and I love the feeling I get from becoming straight again. I still think about my stepsister but it cannot be compared to when I had a thing for her now that I’m dating a boy.”

Mr Adams regarded me closely. ” Are you sure you can handle a relationship? It’s a big job. You could get distracted.”

I took one look at Damian from the corner of my eyes. He immediately looked away, eyes bored as fúck.

I smiled. ” Yeah, I can handle it. And if God so willing, we could get married.”

I saw Damian stiffened. Mr Adams still hasn’t noticed someone was hiding at the hedge outside our window.

” Not everyone’s love story is the same,” Mr Adams smiled and it was surprising how bright his smile was. ” But we all make a choice. I love your guts and decision. Stick to why you believe in. But I wanna know, do you really love this boy?”

” I do,” I said sharply. ” I don’t know if he loves me same way I do but I’m willing to give him a chance. He’s the sign I prayed for.”

I saw Damian smiled and before I knew it, he slipped away towards his house.

Mr Adams kept his smile. ” I’m glad you find someone you love. It takes time. It won’t be an easy ride. No matter how hard you try moving on, the memory will haunt you but remain strong. You’re sure to win. I guarantee you that.”

” Thank you very much, sir,” I blushed when I looked down and saw the knives on the table. ” I’m sorry for the knives. I was just being cautious. Don’t take it too badly, sir. I never had any intention of Killin you.”

He sighed. ” Yeah, I know and I understand your fears. I’d have done the same thing if I were in your shoes.”

And that was how we became best of friends.

I was wrong about Mr Adams. He wasn’t a bad man. Now I understood why mom chose him to homeschool me. He wasn’t just the perfect gentleman, he was way beyond perfect.

We ended the days lesson with a good note.

Before he left, he helped me to return the knives back to the kitchen. It’s funny how hours ago, I had been crazy enough to hide knives to kill my home teacher in self defense.

Now he was the one assisting me to arrange the knives.

After Mr Adams left, I reviewed a text message.

It was from Damian.

I read it, feeling warm at heart.

He had typed:

**OUR LOVE STORY WILL BE LIKE MR ADAM’S. I AM YOUR ADAM AND YOU WILL BE MY EVE. I PROMISE**

I needed not a prophet to explain what he meant by the Adam and Eve part.

He was trying to tell me he was going to marry me.

And that was a promise on his part.
