•••••••••AUTHOR’S POV•••••••••••

Tearing out a sheet of paper, Collette worked on a maths problem. She laid on Lucy’s bed, her face screwed up in concentration at the problem she was solving.

But no matter how hard she tried to focus, she couldn’t concentrate.

Her mind kept dwelling on the hours Vee had stayed in her room; the words she spoke and the way she said it.

∆∆∆∆∆∆ FLASHBACK ∆∆∆∆∆∆

” What are you doing here?” Collette asked, facing Vee fully.

Vee stood by the doorway, watching her. ” Saw you walking past the school gates so I followed you.”

Collette balled her hands into fists. She had made up her mind never to be involved with Vee anymore but here Vee was, standing before her.

It was uncanny how attractive Vee looked. She had always been attractive to Collette but not this attractive.

Her husband must be treating her well, Collette thought.

” I don’t want you in my room,” Collette said quietly, turning away. ” Please leave.”

Behind her, she heard light footsteps approaching her.

The footsteps stopped all of a sudden, right behind her back.

Collette closed her eyes. She could feel Vee’s hot breath at the back of her neck.

” I want to talk to you, Chi-Chi,” Vee whispered to her ears.

That voice. The way she said it, sent a caress over the nerves of Collette’s skin.

This woman always have a way of giving her the sweetest taboo.

Collette snapped open her eyes coolval stories and quickly stepped away from her.

” Just say what you’re here to say and leave,” Collette said breathlessly.

Vee regarded her for a second then she walked over to the study table, drew out a chair and sat down with her legs crossed.

Every movement was slow and deliberate. It reminded Collette of their numerous love making.

” Isn’t Lucy resuming school with you?” Vee asked.

” She’s not!” Collette responded curtly.

Vee eyed her, showing no surprise. ” Why?”

” I don’t see how that’s your business.”

” It Should be,” Vee brushed back her long hair. ” I’m her school guardian after all.”

Collette said nothing.

Vee continued. ” I spoke to Lucy’s mom yesterday. She told me what happened between you and Lucy. She’s switching Lucy to a whole different school.”

Just to hear Vee talking about Lucy brought Collette out in a mad frenzy.

” Well, she’s gone,” Collette snapped. ” I’m glad though. As long as she doesn’t end up in your stupid reading group I’m fine with that.”

Vee smiled but it was a bitter smile. ” You know when you lost one. A girl you know when you lost. Lucy’s that girl.”

Collette felt herself go hot then cold. ” What’s that supposed to mean?”

” It means It wasn’t I who lost,” Vee spoke quietly. ” It was you.”

Before Collette could say anything, Vee stood up and walked over to her.

Collette took some steps back. ” Don’t come any closer, stay away from me.”

But Vee kept coming until Collette was backed up against the wall. Leaned against her, Vee placed her hand over Collette’s shoulder, face drawn forward to her face.

Collette shut her eyes, thinking Vee was about to kiss her.

But nothing happened. She slightly opened her eyes to see Vee gazing down at her eyes.

They remained like that for a long time before Vee suddenly spoke.

” I want to set things right between us, Chi-Chi. I know that’s too much to ask. I know I’m a selfish bítch but I want you to know I’ve been working on me. I know it don’t matter, yeah I know. I know I’ve been nothing short of a disaster. That’s why I want you to forgive me. And if it’s too late l understand. Sometimes it’s too late to make amends. Just hear me out before you let it go. There is one thing I need for you to know.”

She paused, as Collette stared at her.

” I’m married now, Collette,” Vee Continued. ” I told Abdul about us. I had thought he would cancel the wedding and everything after my confession about my affair with you. But Abdul went ahead and married me all the same. He told me he loves me and he respects my sexuality. Still, he wishes for me to give you up and choose between him and you. I do love Abdul but I also love you more. During our honeymoon, Abdul and I had a serious talk concerning our future. He made me understand he wasn’t going to give up on me. However, I have to choose between him and you.”

Collette moisture her dry lips. ” So who did you choose?”

Vee took up her face in her hand and gazed deeply into Collette’s eyes.

” Chi-Chi, heavens know you’re my first choice. If same–séx marriages were legal in the country, I’d be happy to ask you to marry me. But I have to make a choice. I chose Abdul.”

Collette said nothing. Her face was blank and expressionless but deep inside her, the pain was there.

Vee added, stroking Collette’s cheeks. ” I still love you, Collette. Abdul loves me too and that’s why he went ahead and married me. He wants me to end my relationship with you. He made me understand you belong to a man and not a woman. I had no other choice than to agree with him.”

Vee paused, leaning closer to kiss Collette on the forehead. ” I hate doing this, Chi-Chi but I’m going to. I’m letting you go. You’re free to get a boyfriend. You don’t have to wait until graduation. As for the lilies, I’ll be holding a meeting.”

This surprised Collette. ” A meeting? What for?”

Vee let go of Collette’s cheeks. ” I’m taking down the lilies. Don’t look that way. I know you’re surprised, wondering why I’d do something like that. Abdul urged me to do so. It’s funny how you do things all in the name of love. I’m ending the lilies and that’s final. It’s a decision I made after marrying Abdul. Also, I kept thinking of Efua. Her death contributed tremendously to my decision.”

Collette couldn’t say anything. But she took hold of her composure and asked. ” So what’s going to happen to me?”

Vee took a step back away from Collette. ” That’s left for you to decide. You’re free Collette. I know right about now, you’re lonely and all alone. I’m sorry for destroying your happiness when I took your Virginity. That was a mistake I wished had never happened. However, I believe you’re going to find someone else. Out there, there’s someone special who’s waiting for you. I don’t know who he is but I’m certain he will give show you a better love than I or Lucy could ever offer to you.”

Collette watched her as she walked towards the doorway. She turned around slowly to look at Collette.

” Welcome back to school, Chi-Chi,” Vee said softly and she gently closed the door.

∆∆∆END OF FLASHBACK∆∆∆

Collette stood up from Lucy’s bed, wandering over to her Window.

She gazed outside into the dark cold night and thought about Vee.

So she was free.

Her oath is broken.

Vee is letting her go.

Meaning she could get a boyfriend without the fears of dying.

It would be a dream come true if Vee did ended the lilies.

••••Out there, there’s someone special who’s waiting for you. I don’t know who he is but I’m certain he will give show you a better love than I or Lucy could ever offer to you••••

Those were Vee’s last words but Collette wasn’t taken in by it. A boyfriend was the last thing on her mind but what if fate turns the table around?

What if she eventually gets to love a boy?

Just then images of Lucy flashed into her mind. She quickly shook the images off her head.

” If only Lucy was a boy,” she thought gloomily and sighed.

Somehow she had to find a means to stop thinking this much about that girl.

Her stepsister.

Monday morning, the student’s of QA were assembled in the assembly ground, standing before the podium.

It was a new academy year. The girls looked refreshed and excited to be back to school. The holidays had been short but eventful for many of the students.

Mrs Coker stepped on the podium, overlooking the sea of faces smiling up at her.

Beside her were Collette and Temi, looking neat and immaculate in their uniforms as they stood with their hands behind their back.

” Good morning, girls,” Mrs Coker’s fruitful voice spread across the assembly ground. ” Welcome back to school.”

” Good morning, Mrs Coker,” the girls replied back in unison.

Mrs Coker beamed at the girls. It felt good seeing her students back after the holidays but that wasn’t what made her entirely Happy.

Today, she was giving a big announcement to the girls. She had been waiting for this day for a very long time.

” I have an important announcement to make,” Mrs Coker said over the microphone, her eyes wandering over to the staff section where her daughter stood. ” Vee, would you come up here, please?”

Vee left the staff section and walked up to the podium. She passed Collette but not after giving Collette a brief look.

” As you all know,” Mrs Coker Continued when Vee stood beside her. ” My daughter, Vee got married earlier this week.”

There was a round of applause to congratulate Mrs Coker over her daughter’s successful marriage.

Mrs Coker smiled with pride. ” Every mother would be proud to have a married daughter. I’m glad to announce to the students, the teaching and non teaching staff of my retirement.”

There was silence. Murmurs spread across the surprised students faces.

Mrs Coker Continued. ” The school no longer belongs to me anymore. I’ve handed it over to my daughter, Vee. From today henceforth, she’s your new principal. Her marriage to my very good friend’s son had merged our schools together as one. As granted, any girl from QA has the possiblity of getting admission into my son’s in-law University. Today, I’m clearing out my office. I might take a vacation. I deserve it. I built this great school and watched it grow to abundant height. My dreams are fulfilled, my journey is over. My daughter will take it from here. Give her your uttermost Respect and love same way you had done to me. This is my last speech as principal. Thank you all for being outstanding intelligent girls. I’ve always been proud of you girls. Love you all.”

It was a marvelous speech and was well welcomed by the school.

Mrs Coker handed the microphone over to Vee. ” You’re in charge now. Do a better job than I have done.”

And this was finished with a hug from Vee.

Collette and Temi took turns to hug Mrs Coker. They had been little girls when they had began QA. Having schooled in QA for six years, it felt sad to see their loved principal retiring.

As custom, Collette shook hands with Vee to welcome her into office. It was supposed to be a brief handshake but Vee held Collette’s hands a little longer.

After assembly, the girls marched towards classes leaving the students council with the new principal and the school staff.

After a brief meeting with Vee and Mrs Coker, everyone returned back to start the days academy lessons.

But Collette was to stay with Vee for sometime in her new office before getting to class.

Vee walked into her new office and sat comfortably behind the desk, a satisfying smile on her face.

Collette stood before her desk, watching her with a blank expression on her face.

” Feels good to be the new director and owner of the school, doesn’t it Chi-Chi?” Vee asked.

Collette said it was.

Vee placed her hand together to form a triangle as she stared up at Collette. ” So what do you think? What’s the first thing you suggest I start working on as new principal?”

Collette wasn’t afraid to say it. ” You mentioned you’d end the LILIES. Let’s start with that.”

Vee stared at her for sometime. She stood up and walked around the desk over to where Collette stood.

” Tonight,” she held Collette’s tie and perfectly fitted it into place. ” I’ll be meeting with you girls tonight.”

Collette looked up at her and it was uncanny how close their faces were to each other.

Collette feared of getting kissed but Vee didn’t do anything.

It seemed it took Vee a great deal of effort from bringing down her lips on her student.

The temptation was great but she controlled herself. For the sake of her husband.

Bringing her mouth over to Collette’s ears, Vee whispered. ” I won’t need you anymore. Go for morning class.”

Collette was glad to leave the room.

Vee watched her leave, letting out a deep breath. This wasn’t going to be as easy as she thought but she had promised Abdul to end the LILIES and her affairs with Collette.

Bringing out her phone, she stared at the wedding photo of Abdul and her which she had made her lock screen wallpaper.

This man had succeeded in changing her. She hoped she could change her girls as well.

Today was Monday.

Mom and dad had left for work. Charlotte was away for her shopping for school. It was going to be a lonely day.

A long lonely day with my home teacher— Mr Adam.

Trust me when I say I wasn’t looking forward to my home teaching today.

I’ll be Alone with a man. This had never happened to me before and it was shocking how mom was calm about it.

Initially, I thought she’d be scared leaving me alone with a man but it seemed she trusted this stranger of a man called Mr Adam.

Well, I don’t trust shít! I’m not going to be taken unaware again.

Temi had warmed me not to fall in love with my home teacher. That’s a laugh cause if I remember vividly, I’ve never had an atom of feeling for any man except Damian.

I was going to be prepared for trouble. A girl can’t be too careful.

And so while everyone left me alone at home, I stayed up in my room, plotting on the best way possible to avoid getting harrased.

I turned my wrist to check the time. It was getting to nine o’clock. My home teacher would be here by nine. I had to be ready for him.

I ran to the kitchen and brought out numerous knives.

It’s crazy but I was Soo ready for anything.

We had lots of knives in the kitchen and they come in different shapes and sizes.

My eyes took in the view of the living room. We’ll probably use the chaise lounge for studying.

I took the knives and inserted one knife inside each of the chairs in the living room.

As if that’s not enough, I hide two knives under the dining table.

I was set and ready.

I own a video camera. If I was going to kill someone in self defense, I’d need a video to prove to the court that I’m innocent.

I took my video camera and placed it at a likely position that took up the entire view of the living room.

This, I thought was the perfect set-up. Mr Adam wouldn’t be Soo difficult to handle.

And so being confident, I relaxed on one of the chairs in the living room, crossing my legs and feeling good about myself.

I waited for my home teacher.

Time crawled by. It was a minute past nine.

He didn’t show up.

Fifteen minutes past nine, he wasn’t here.

By now I was getting relieved. I hoped he wouldn’t come today. It’d be great to have the day to myself.

I saw no need for stressing myself if he didn’t happen to come.

But once it was nine thirty, I heard his salon drove into the parking space beside my house.

I groaned disappointedly.

And here I was, hoping the brute won’t show up. It wasn’t long before I heard the door bell ringing.

This is it!

I took a small knife and hid it at the back of my pockets.

Walking with heavy steps, I stopped at the door and unlocked it.

Mr Adam stood before me, looking big and harmless at me.

He wasn’t wearing his dark glasses and it was uncanny to see how kind his eyes were despite his intimidating stature.

His long sleeve was rolled up to show his beefy arms and he wore a stripped baggy trousers that did a little as much to conceal the thickness of his legs.

” I’m sorry I’m late, Lucy,” Mr Adam said, still standing outside my door. ” I had to take my kids to school and my wife, she needed me to do a few chores at home.”

His voice was soft and low pitched. I can’t tell why but I was softening towards him. He looked like he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

I could outline sweat beads on his forehead. Surely, he must’ve done some really tough chores for his wife.

” Do I come in or do I remain outside?” Adam asked, watching me closely.

It was then I realized he was still outside. I opened the door widely to let him in.

I couldn’t say a word to him. My mind dwelled on many things. One of those things were the knives inside the chairs and the knife at the back of my pocket.

Mr Adam walked into the room, carrying a little brief case with him. He stood in the middle of the room and surveyed the room closely.

I watched him, aware of how quiet the house had suddenly taken form since he set foot here.

He turned and met my probing eyes. ” Where do you want to have your lessons?”

It was hard letting go of those kind piercing eyes. I didn’t know what to answer.

” Lucy?”

I snapped into reality. ” Well, umm… there’s the dinning table.”

He nodded. ” Excellent choice.”

The moment he walked towards the dining table, I was certain to make sure my hidden camera was facing the dining table perfectly.

I could see the camera but he couldn’t see it. That was my own advantage.

Time for lessons.

If he tries anything funny, all I had to do was pull out a knife and strike.

I was ready for anything. I was ready for Mr Adam.
