ELIZABETH

There’s nothing that I hate more than being taken for a fool and that’s why Marian has been doing. Ever since Luan disappeared, she’s been acting suspiciously like a criminal, even when I ask her about her brother’s whereabouts I noticed that she was hiding something cause the way she replies to my questions indicates that she’s not telling me the true. Despite all that, I never confronted her or tried to force her to tell me the truth.

As if I haven’t gone through enough troubles, Anderson wasn’t making things any easier for me either. His presence always turns me off not mention of his behavior in the house. The stupid man never does anything, all he does is go out to God knows where and drink until he pops.

God knows I wanted to tell him off and confront him to stop his nonsense but I was afraid to do so cause the man I married was another but an animal. Ever since Anderson threatened me, I’ve been living in fear and all I could do was watch helplessly. Nothing troubled me more when I found out I was pregnant, the baby was obviously Luan’s child but I couldn’t afford to let anyone know especially Anderson because if he finds out that I’m pregnant for another man only God knows what he’ll do to me.

Seeing that I was in a tight fix, I decided to do all I could to find a way to solve my problem and the only shrewd person that could help me out was Erica.

So one afternoon, I went over to her house and laid out my problems to her. As i was narrating everything to her, Erica looked as if she didn’t care but she was listening to every word I said and at the same time she was smoking to her hearts content. After I was done, she kept quiet for some seconds smoking her cigarette before saying anything to me.

.

Erica let me get this straight! You’re pregnant?

.

Elizabeth Yes.

.

Erica You suspect your head servant is hiding something from you?

.

Elizabeth Yes.

.

Erica And your husband is being a total…. #&#£% (censored).

.

Elizabeth Yes pretty much!

.

Erica Damn! You’re definitely in a big mess.

.

Elizabeth Please Erica, I need your help. I can’t have this baby not while Anderson is around.

.

Erica So are you going to abort it?

.

Elizabeth What? No.. I can’t do that. It’s murder.

.

Erica That’s what you think.

.

Elizabeth Look, this isn’t a joking matter. I can’t lose this baby and I can’t lose my life.

.

Erica Hmm, alright.. I’ll help you but things are going to get really messy. I hope you can handle the pressure.

.

Elizabeth What are you saying?

.

Erica Your husband is the main obstacle here and once we get rid of him, your problems will be solved.

.

Elizabeth Dear lord! No, absolutely not. I don’t want Anderson dead, I just want him out of my life. That’s all.

.

Erica Hmm, what a shame. It would have been easier though. Nobody will find his body.

.

Elizabeth No, no, no.. I don’t want blood on my hands and I don’t want him dead. There has to be some other way to get rid of him.

.

Erica My dear, you’re too kind. If it was in america.. That husband of yours is history. Come on.. Let’s go for drive.

.

It seems I may have underestimated Erica and she’s capable of. I couldn’t believe she would calmly suggest killing my own husband. The idea was just terrible. Erica may look like some dumb American lady but she was practically cunning and dangerous. Although, I couldn’t help but wonder why she would want us to go out for a drive, we were the only ones in the house so I really don’t see why go somewhere else but since I’m the one asking for help, I had no choice but to follow Erica.

.

Minutes later, Here I was with Erica driving through the streets of Johannesburg. The weather was nice and the gentle breeze ran through our hair as we drove around. As I was absentmindedly staring at the people standing by the side of the street, I caught a glimpse of Marian entering an old rickety bus with a basket in her hand.

Something was definitely going on cause I’ve noticed that she’s been carrying that basket occasionally and she always fills it up with food and takes it to God knows where. I didn’t bother to ask where she goes with the basket but now she’s got my attention.

.

Elizabeth Erica! Stop the car.

.

Erica Why?

.

Elizabeth Just stop the car.

.

Erica Okay, okay.. (brakes)

.

Elizabeth Follow that old bus.

.

Erica Are you serious?

.

Elizabeth Just do as I say.

.

Erica Okay, I hope you know what you’re doing.

.

Erica did as I told her to and followed the bus from a safe distance. The damn old clunker was slow and it’s engine made loud noises. Erica was getting bored and pissed at the pace we were going but she never complained. After 30mins of slow trailing, the bus finally stopped at Mbombela, the place was so nice but the lifestyle there was so rural not to mention that the people there were all blacks.

After the bus stopped, Erica parked us at a safe distance where we wouldn’t be seen. Erica who was still confused about this whole situation decided to inquire about what was going on.

.

Erica Look Liz, what’s going on? What’s in that bus that you’re dying to see?

.

Elizabeth It’s my servant, Marian.

.

Erica Oh.. Why are you stalking her?

.

Elizabeth Shhh, she’s coming out. Lower your face.

.

Erica Relax, there’s no way she’d see us from that distance. Why is she holding that basket? Does her lover live here?

.

I ignored Erica and kept staring at Marian to see where she would go next. But instead of moving, the silly girl just stood there like some statue looking left and right as if she was waiting for someone and in the moment, the unexpected happened. Just right across the street was Luan, the man that was suppose to have travelled was now in my sight. I had twitch my eyes multiple times because I couldn’t believe it was him but here he was in the flesh.

The charming rogue was looking a lot better since he disappeared 2 weeks ago but the look on his face was that of a man who was bored with life. Erica couldn’t hide her shock when she saw Luan, I had to cover her mouth so that she wouldn’t try to scream. As I kept looking on from a safe distance, Luan crossed over to his sister and collected the basket. They both stood and discussed for some minutes before they both parted ways.

.

Elizabeth I knew something was going on. So this is where the rogue is hiding. Men, they’re worthless creatures. Wait till I get my hands on the dog.

.

Erica Jesus Liz, look at the bright side. At least he’s not cheating on you. Maybe he disappeared because he wanted to get a break away from you.

.

Elizabeth A BREAK??? Well, that’s ridiculous. I don’t bother him or stress him at all . I bet there’s a woman in the house where he lives. That Marian… Ohh, she’s the conniving one.

.

Erica Okay, okay,.. Look, I don’t give a damn about the female black apes but sincerely speaking, Don’t blame the poor girl. Just examine this situation for a minute. Luan disappeared on the day your husband returned right?

.

Elizabeth Yes but that was before he returned.

.

Erica Good, don’t you think maybe he knows about your husband?, There might be something that alerted Luan about your husband’s home coming. I mean think about it. Husband comes home, and lover disappears.

.

In that moment, the stupid letter that Anderson sent me months ago popped into my mind. I could vividly remember that the letter was on my bed right after Luan disappeared. A letter that I didn’t bother to open or read was on my bed not to mention the envelope which was open as well. Could it be that Luan read the letter while I was in bathroom? But if so why should he run? It’s not like Anderson knows about my affair with him.

.

Elizabeth But it doesn’t make any sense. Why would he disappear like that? It’s not like my husband knows about our affair and besides he could have at least tell me.

.

Erica Well, you can go find out from him. We’d better follow him now before gets out of sight.

.

Elizabeth No.. You stay here. I’d better follow him myself.

.

Erica Okay, be careful.

.

After that, I got out of Erica’s car and followed Luan as fast as I could and from a safe distance. Luckily for me, there was hardly anyone around to notify him that he was being followed but what surprised me was the way he walked confidently without looking back.

It’s natural for people to be looking back every once in a while but not in Luan’s case. I began to wonder how he managed to survive this long in this cold bloody war with Hitler’s forces.

After a while, Luan arrived at a rotten house that looks as if it was going to collapse any second. The house was just utterly miserable and it was in need of a great repair. As soon as Luan went into the house, I hid behind a tree and waited eagerly to see if something would happen. I was on the edge hoping to hear a woman’s voice but everywhere was silent. I waited for a little while longer then I decided to go over to the house and confront Luan.

Upon arriving at his doorstep , I banged the old wooden door twice before it was open and as soon as the door opened, Luan and I came face to face.

The world came crashing down on Luan’s head the moment he saw me. He was shocked beyond belief, his eyes was wide open and his body froze instantly. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking but before he could say anything to me, I cursed and slapped the life out of him. I was very angry and ready to put up a fight if it came to that, all I wanted in that moment was to hurt Luan and make him feel bad as well.

But to my surprise, Luan showed no sign of anger ; his face was awfully calm and still. Then suddenly, Luan pulled me into his room and locked the door.

For a while, things got heated between us in that room but Luan was finally able to calm me down so that he could explain why he disappeared. I decided to give him a chance to explain himself.

.

Luan Look I’m sorry. You’re right. I shouldn’t have done what I did and I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. Just let me explain the reason behind all this and there’s something I should have told you long time ago and with the way things are going now, I think you deserve to know.

.

Elizabeth Alright, I’m listening.

.

Luan Sigh! The reason why I left was because of your husband.

.

Elizabeth Anderson? But why? He doesn’t know about us.

.

Luan That’s not the reason why I left. You see your husband and I fought in the war together.

.

Elizabeth So you both know each other?

.

Luan Yes but unfortunately, things didn’t turn out well between us.

.

Elizabeth What do you mean?

.

Luan Because I ran away and came home, we got a report that there was a German spy in our midst. We did all we could to flush the spy out but we couldn’t. Then one night, I was sent to the armory to drop off some crates of explosives when I saw your husband standing over my God father with a gun in hand. I didn’t understand what was going on at first but I later realized that he was the spy. So I did what I could to save my God father from dying and then fled back home. Elizabeth, your husband is a Nazi. He’s one of Hitler’s men.

.

Immediately I heard that, I felt dizzy and nauseous. I tried not to believe what I heard cause everything sounded too good to be true. There’s no way Anderson was a German, he looks British and sounds British. He showed me the place he grew up in London and even introduced me to some of his friends. This can’t be true.

.

Elizabeth No way.. That’s impossible. I don’t believe you.

.

Luan But it’s the truth.

.

Elizabeth No, no.. Anderson can’t be a German. No way! You’re making this up.

.

Luan What? Why would I make this up? Do you think I’m hiding here because I want to?. If I go back to the farm house and your husband sees me, he’ll kill us including you. Your husband is a traitor and a killer.

.

Elizabeth This is ridiculous. I expected better from you Luan, not this nonsense. Don’t even bother coming back to the farm. I’ll be sure to kick your sister out as well.

.

Luan Sure go ahead. You’ll be doing her a favor by keeping her out of your husband’s piercing lustful gaze.

.

I felt stung by Luan’s last statement that I turned around and tried to slap him but he grabbed my hand and pressed it tightly.

.

Elizabeth Let go of me.

.

Luan I may have allowed you the first time. There won’t be a second time.

.

Elizabeth Oh really? Acting so tough huh? Come on. Go ahead. Assault me.

.

Luan Only mad men beat their women and I am not one.

.

Elizabeth I’m not your woman and you mean nothing to me. You’re nothing more than just another black man.

.

Luan Is that so? Then why are you here? I’m sure you didn’t just come here by accident.

.

Elizabeth Let go of me or I’ll scream.

.

Luan Go ahead. There’s nobody here to rescue you.

.

Elizabeth What could have seen in you in the first place? I was fool for loving you. You’re a scum. A lesser man.

.

Luan (laughs) Maybe, but I’m a whole lot better than that traitorous husband of yours. He’s not even a man, he’s a coward. Only a coward would stoop so low to be lusting after his wife’s servant.

.

Elizabeth That b–tch sister of yours is nothing but a… WOOAAAH.

.

In that moment, Luan pushed me unto his bed furiously. His face was in a foul mood and it was evident that he was angry about what I had just said. I swallowed hard as I saw the angry look in his eyes and I knew I was in trouble.

.

Luan DON’T YOU EVER CALL MY SISTER THAT WORD!! Who the hell do you think you are? Just because you’re my employer doesn’t give you the right to insult those that are dear to me. You know very well that your husband isn’t a good man, he controls you with fear and makes life unbearable for you and everyone else in the farm house and yet you choose to defend him. Your husband has tried on many occasions to force himself on Marian but she has managed to escape him but I’m afraid she can’t do this forever.

There’s a wolf in your house Elizabeth and if you don’t do something, everyone will suffer the consequences. I don’t care if you believe me or not ; I’ve already told you what you need to know. It’s up to you to decided whether to act or not and whatever you do, don’t confront your husband about this else he’ll be the last thing you ever see in this world. You can shut the door on your way out.
