During my campus days in Oxford, my study friends from the history department would tell me stories about the festivals and ceremonies of Africa, some were pleasant while some were truly barbaric ; I never thought I’d be witnessing or experiencing one of this events cause I never had any intention of coming to Africa but as fate would have it, here I am.

The Dance festival was one of the most celebrated festivals in South Africa and the people looked like they were celebrating Christmas, everyone was so happy and joyous for the festival which was a few hours away. While everyone was busy making plans for tonight , I was busy planning on what to wear for the event. Luan promised he was going to take me out and I didn’t have slightest idea on what to wear. All my clothes looked formal and I don’t think wearing such attires would suit this occasion.

After hours of searching what to wear, I left my room and went downstairs where I sat outside my porch smoking a cigarette . As I was busy puffing smoke into the air, Luan showed up in front of me looking so exposed ; not n–kedly of course, he wore a hat, a white singlet and some weird looking khaki shirts and boots . His sense of fashion this time around was totally wacky and ridiculous.

Luan Good evening Lady Elizabeth.

Elizabeth What are you wearing?

Luan You like my dressing? (Posing)

Elizabeth Er… It’s odd but nice.

Luan Thanks… I’ve bought something for you.

Elizabeth What is it?

Luan Here.

Luan showed me the item and when I saw it, I realized it was a native attire. The fabric was beautiful but the only problem was I had no idea how to put on.

Elizabeth It’s beautiful.. Uhm.. How do I wear it?

Luan Its a wrapper. You wrap it around your body.

Elizabeth I don’t understand!

In that moment, Njeri and her kids approached Luan and I, they all had lovely paintings on their skins and bodies. I quickly composed myself as soon as they got closer, I don’t want them to be suspicious of my relationship with Luan.

Njeri Good evening Mistress.

Elizabeth Evening Njeri. Nice painting, you and your kids look nice.

Njeri Thank you. Er ma?

Elizabeth Yes, what is it?

Njeri Uhm, Tonight is the dance festival and I would like to spend the night with my family. That is if you approve?

Elizabeth Of course. You can. I don’t see why. Go enjoy yourself with the family.

Njeri Oh thank you mistress.

As soon as I gave her the night off, Njeri and her kids went off walking excitedly and as soon as they were almost out of sight, Luan and I continued our conversation.

Elizabeth Back to business..where were we?

Luan Your dressing?

Elizabeth Yes… Yes.. how do i this wrapper?

Luan You saw Njeri, didn’t you?

Elizabeth Yes?

.

Luan Then you saw the wrapper around her waist.

Elizabeth Oh? You want me to wrap it around my hips?

Luan Yes.

.

Elizabeth Hmm, but I don’t think I’ll look good in it.

Luan Come on, you have to try it. I know you’ll look lovely.

Elizabeth Are you certainly?

Luan Of course.

Elizabeth Hmm okay then, I’ll try it on. Toss it over.
