The Enemy Within, Episode Eight

"Who is your girlfriend? Can you tell me? Who is the girl that has stolen your heart? Who is the girl you want to marry? I promise, if you tell me, I will keep it a secret and I will also tell you who I want to marry. I mean I will tell you the man I'm in love with." Clara and Uche had come out of the main building and were drinking wine and relaxing their nerves under a beautiful shade in the compound.

"I want to trust that you are not going to betray me, so, I'm going tell you. Since we are now working together towards a common goal, I'm really no longer scared that you will leak my secret." Uche responded as both of them laughed out loud.

Meanwhile, Uche's mother was watching them from the first floor of the main building and she was happy that at last, the two young people were getting along. She did not know what was going on. All she saw was their wild laughter, but she knew nothing of the real plans in their hearts. Uche and Clara maintained that positive outward disposition throughout the period they were planning what to do. Because of that, it became hard for them to be suspected.

"You should rest assured that your secret is safe with me. Besides, I'm also going to tell you the person I intend to marry, so you got nothing to fear." Clara said, taking a sip from the glass of wine in her hand. She placed the wine on the table and crossed her legs confidently, waiting for Uche to spill the beans. Just then, Chizi, the housemaid arrived to deliver a bottle of ground which Uche had requested. As she dropped the bottle and was leaving, Uche pointed at her and told Clara that Chizi was the woman who stole his heart. Chizi had turned to look at Uche jealously, indicating she was not happy seeing that her boyfriend was chilling with another woman and she had nothing to do about it.

"That is my girlfriend. I mean, I will swim and die with her. She stole my heart from the very day she came into this house to serve as a maid. I can never be able to live without her. That is the woman my parents want me to leave. Thanks to God, their plans never worked." Uche said, smiling. He opened the bottle of groundnut and took some of it and start chewing.

"What? Are you serious? My goodness she so beautiful! think I have to apologies to you for slapping her the other day. I'm ashamed of that action. I'm going to personally apologize to her. Wow! I'm impressed. How have you been able to keep the whole thing as a secret all these years?" Clara asked. She was smiling broadly because the news she just heard gladdened her heart.

"It takes a lot of planning and love, Believe me, love can conquer anything. We love each other and that has kept us strong. My parents are not aware of our relationship and I'm sure no one else knows." Uche said with a smile. From the way he was laughing, Clara knew his happiness had returned in full.

"I'm so happy for you." Clara said.

"Thank you. So, your turn. Who is your boyfriend? Who has stolen your heart?" Uche asked.

"My boyfriend is my driver." Clara said, laughing out so loudly that people in the main building heard hear. She grabbed the bottle of groundnut and took some of it. She was still laughing and Uche joined her.

"Now know that you really can't chose who you love. Love is like a seed from an exploded pod, it can germinate anywhere it falls. Wow! Babe! You are really very courageous. When did you two start dating?" Uche asked.

"We fell in love two years ago. It happened immediately my dad hired him to drive me. He looked so handsome that I found it hard to resist him when he asked me to be his girlfriend. "Clara said, feeling shy.

"You mean he asked you out?" Uche asked.

"Yes he did! He is very brave despite the fact that he does not have money and from a poor home. But, I guess I already fell in love with him even before he asked me out. I was already dying for him to be my man before he finally took me to a restaurant one night and told me how much he loved me. He took me to a very local restaurant where he spent only N5,000 for two of us, but I tell you, that night remains my most cherished night in terms of love and dating. I mean, everything was just so real and he did not fake it. I could see that he lacked money, but he genuinely loved me. I have had so many heartbreaks with the rich guys I dated, but with Mike, I found rest. Mike is the love of my life and he is the one want to settle down with." Clara said. Some tears of joy dropped from her eyes.

"So, all these while that you kept calling your driver to come pick you up, that's actually your boyfriend? You are a genius in this game, even more strategic than me." Uche said.

"No, you are more strategic! Imagine dating the housemaid in your house and no one knows! You are a five star general in this game of secret love." Clara joked.

"But the more important thing now is to execute our plan. Here is what I want us to do since we are now on the same page. Your fiancée is poor, and mine is also poor. What if we empower them and bring them to the standard that our parents like? Let's give them money to run their own businesses and become independent and rich so that when our parents see them, they will respect them. What do you think?" Uche asked.

"Let's do it. I have N10 million I have been saving for a long time. I will give all of it to Mike. I can do anything for him." Clara said.

"If you give him the money yourself, you will make him feel bad. You will injure his ego. You know you are a woman and he is the man. Don't worry, I will make him my friend and you will give me the money to give to him. This will protect his ego and your relationship, because in our culture, you are supposed to look up to him, and not him looking up to you." Uche said. Clara nodded her head in agreement.

"What of your girlfriend? What are you going to do for Chizi?" Clara asked.

"She is a trained tailor. I will open a fashion house for her with N10 million as well." Uche responded.

"There is something I want to suggest. You have to tell Mike and Chizi that you are borrowing them the money. Tell them they have to return it so that they will look after it prudently." Clara said.

"You are right. Also, I will suggest you let Mike go. He should no longer be your driver. Let him disappear and stop visiting your house so that he will have some respect before your parents when he finally becomes rich. I will also tell my parents to sack Chizi so that she will go and establish her life in readiness to marry me." Uche said. He and clara sealed their plans and resolved to take Chizi and Mike out to a resolved to take Chizi and Mike out to a restaurant the next day so as to make them aware of the plan on ground.
