The Enemy Within, Episode Seventeen

"Mike are you ready?" Uche asked when he came down from the three storey building. He had called Mike the previous night and informed him that he would serve as the best man at the wedding. Mike was very happy and considered it a privilege. It would be the first time he would function in that capacity at a wedding. It also made him happy because he would get the chance to see the sadness on Clara's face when she realizes she couldn't stop Uche's wedding to Chizi. But he was also scared that the wedding might not hold because she knows Clara could be mischievous and dangerous.

Are you ready for the D-day?" Uche asked again with a smile on his face. He has been very happy since the night before. He needed a family member to stand by him on the wedding day, so he called his uncle who readily made himself available.

The only person that was not there was Chizi who was at the salon putting finishing touches to her hairdo and makeup. But essentially, everyone was ready and they were waiting for her to join them.

It was not too long before she was driven into the compound with a jeep. The wedding party flocked into the jeep and they drove out of the compound and headed to the registry for the wedding.

"I can't believe everything is going smoothly as planned. I can't believe we are getting married. It is a dream come true for me. I have been dreaming of this day all my life. Thank you so much my king for making my dream come true. I'm so happy. I mean, today is my happiest day on earth. Look at me, an ophan, with no father or mother, but I'm about to get married to the son of a rich man. Truly, every dream is valid and every dream is achievable." Chizi said to Uche. They were sitting on the back seat of the jeep.

"Perhaps, one of my greatest achievements on earth will be that I'm getting married to you. There have been a lot of oppositions, but our love overcame all of them. Ours is a story of resilience and a belief in each other. Thank you very much Chizi for standing with me through this journey which was filled with a lot of difficulties." Uche said as he placed his left hand on Chizi's shoulder. Everything was going smoothly but trouble started when they got to a police check point.

"All of you should come down." One of the police officers shouted as if he had seen. dangerous criminals that needed to be rounded up and locked up. Chizi was scared but Uche tapped her shoulder and asked her not to be worried, that everything would be fine. Everyone in the car obeyed the policeman and stepped down immediately. Uche walked to the police officer with the intention of talking to him and finding out what it was that they wanted. He was shocked that the police officer refused to listen to him.

"I have an express instruction from above to have you all arrested and detained. You are not to leave this place until further instruction from the state headquarters. None of you should move. Tell the driver of that jeep to park it properly because you are going to stay here for a long time until investigations are concluded on the crime you have committed." The police officer in charge of the check point said. He had his gone placed in a ready-to-shoot position. Uche was surprised at what he was hearing.

"What crime are you talking about? What crime have we committed? I mean, we are just on our way to our wedding as you must have noticed. Why are you talking about crime? I'm a law abiding citizen." Uche said with confidence but the police officer was adamant as he behaved as if he did not hear what Uche said.

"Who do you think you are and what made you think you can command me? I'm the officer in charge of this check point and you are not in the position to command me or to tell me how to do my job. I just told you I have express instruction to arrest all of you and you are saying you are supposed to attend a wedding. Are you out of your mind? If you are educated, you should know how to talk to a high-ranking law enforcement officer like me. Look, be very careful with me else, you and your friends will have yourselves to blame." The policeman said with a loud voice.

"I'm not disrespecting you. I'm just saying that as a law-abiding citizen, I deserve to know the crime for which I'm being arrested. I have also told you that we were on our way to our wedding. We are not carrying anything suspicious. Please, tell us what we have done wrong. At least, it is my right to know why I'm in the police net." Uche continued to make Important demands, but the policeman in charge grew a thick skin and refused to give him a positive reply.

"When you finish ranting, you will look for a place and sit down because you and your fiancée are going nowhere. If you move an inch, I promise you will find out the stuff I'm made of. I will show you another colour of me that you have not seen." The police officer threatened.

That was how Uche and his companions were detained at the police check point for two hours. The wedding was slated to hold by 12 noon and the time was already 11 am. They set out early with the intention to beat the traffic and get to the registry on time, but little did they know that there was going to be an obstacle.

Chizi was already weeping profusely and no one could condole her.

"My enemy finally caught up with me. Why will I be arrested on my wedding day? If I had a gun, I would have engaged them right now. They can't ruin my day." Chizi said with tears. Her makeup has been ruined and her face looked oily like a cat that that fell into a pot of palm oil.

"Who was talking here? Who is talking about gun?" A police officer asked, but no one said anything. He walked away with his strong face.

"So our wedding will not hold?" Chizi asked in her heart. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she wondered who ordered their arrest. She was hungry and tired. Uche saw her situation and went to speak to her to calm her down.

"Please my love, calm down. I promise you that this wedding will hold. No one can stop us. It's a promise. Please, get into the car and allow me promise. Please, get into the car and allow me to handle this." Uche said, but Chizi refused because she was already too agitated to relax.

"No one should enter that car. All of you should stay outside. I won't warn you again." A policeman who overheard their conversation shouted at Uche.
