After hearing her husband’s new rule, Susan mumbles angrily as she walks to the room to get her husband’s wallet. This new rule had definitely ruined Susan’s usual routine but there was nothing she could do but accept it.
However, Susan wasn’t the only one having a tough time. After hearing that his son was being lovey-dovey with a black woman, Mr. Brown confronts his son later that afternoon about the issue trying to force him to cease contact with Marian but Peter who was as stubborn as he father refused to yield to his father’s request.

Brown May the world end the day I see my own flesh and blood hitting it off with an inferior race.

Peter Nothing you say or do will change my opinion about Marian. I love her. She’s the best woman I’ve ever been with.

Brown You will do as I say or I’ll cut you out of the inheritance.

Peter Do as you wish. It’s sad to have a family that doesn’t care about my happiness.

Brown Happiness? How can you find happiness in some common illiterate negro?

Peter Watch your mouth father. Marian is not an illiterate. Don’t judge her when you haven’t seen her.

Brown You disgrace me! Your mother and cousins will be ashamed to here that you’re falling for a black woman.

Peter I don’t care, if you can’t understand my happiness, there’s no need for me to talk to you any longer. If you don’t mind, I have someplace else to be.

Brown You can go to wherever you like, I don’t care.
