Episode 8: The Ink Trap

Will the sweet tears of a liar hide the ugly truth forever?

The sitting room was very dark and very quiet. The cold air from the open door blew into the room. It made the long curtains move back and forth like shadows. Tunde stood at the edge of the kitchen doorway. His whole body was stiff, and his face was frozen. He looked at the sofa in the middle of the room. He could not believe what his eyes were seeing. His mind was spinning around and around like a wheel.

In his right hand, he was holding a glass cup full of cold water. He had gone to the kitchen to get a drink to calm his dry throat. But now, he forgot all about his thirst. His fingers became very weak. They lost all their strength because of the heavy shock in his heart. The glass cup slipped from his fingers. It fell down through the cold air.

Tunde dropped his water cup.

The glass cup hit the hard floor with a very loud crash. It broke into a hundred tiny pieces. The cold water spilled everywhere, wetting the floor tiles and the edge of the carpet. The noise was very sharp in the silent house. It sounded like a small explosion. But Tunde did not care about the broken glass. He did not care about the water on his feet. He did not even look down at the floor. His eyes were glued to the sofa.

He stared at the red ink dripping from the beautiful white dress.

The sight was truly terrible. The favorite white dress of his wife Bisi was completely ruined. The clean fabric was now covered in a massive, dark puddle of wet ink. The red liquid was very thick and bright. It looked like red paint or dark blood in the dim light of the sitting room. It was soaking deep into the white cloth, spreading out farther and farther every second. Tunde watched a small drop of the red ink move slowly down the side of the dress. It reached the bottom edge and fell onto the soft cushion of the sofa. Drip. Drop. Drip. Drop. Every drop felt like a heavy blow to Tunde's heart. He knew how much Bisi loved that dress. He knew that this dress was a special symbol of their love. Now, it was messy and dirty. It was completely destroyed.

Lola was standing near the sofa. When she heard the loud crash of the glass cup, she jumped up in fear. She saw Tunde standing there, watching everything. She knew she had to act very fast. She was a very wicked girl, and she had a mind full of bad tricks. She did not want Tunde to know that she was the one who poured the red ink. She wanted to protect herself, and she wanted to make Bisi look like a bad person. So, she began to play a big game of pretend.

Lola started to cry very loudly.

She did not just cry a little bit. She made a very big show of her sadness. She opened her mouth wide and let out a big, noisy sob. She rubbed her eyes with her hands to make them look red and wet. She forced real tears to come out of her eyes. She wanted to look like an innocent person who was very sad and very scared. Her voice was shaking as she made loud weeping noises that filled the entire sitting room. She wanted her cries to drown out the silence of the house.

She ran to Tunde and grabbed his arm.

Lola moved across the room with quick, hurried steps. She did not care about the broken glass on the floor. She rushed straight to the kitchen doorway where Tunde was standing like a statue. She reached out her long fingers and clutched his shirt sleeve. She gripped his strong arm very tightly, as if she was drowning and needed his help to stand up. She leaned her body against him, pretending to be weak from sorrow. She looked up into his face with her wet eyes, trying to make him feel pity for her.

"Oh Tunde," Lola cried out with fake tears, "I saw Bisi do this to herself!"

Her voice was very high and loud. She spoke the words quickly, trying to sound completely shocked. She pointed her shaking finger back at the ruined white dress on the sofa. She wanted Tunde to look at the mess and listen to her lies. She did not feel any shame for the big untruth she was telling. She wanted to wrap Tunde in a big web of deception before he could think clearly about what happened.

Lola kept talking without stopping. She squeezed her eyes tightly to make more tears fall down her cheeks. "She poured the ink on her own dress just now," Lola said, sobbing loudly between her words. "She did it with her own hands, Tunde! I tried to stop her, but she would not listen to me. She was screaming and acting like a crazy person. She took the bottle and splashed the dark red ink all over the white cloth on purpose!"

Lola leaned closer to Tunde's ear, making her voice sound very urgent and secret. "She is trying to make you feel bad and look like a monster!" Lola lied. "Bisi wants everyone to think that you are a bad husband. She wants to show her family that you destroy her things when you are angry. She did this terrible thing just to blame you, Tunde! She wants to ruin your name and make you look like a wicked man to the whole world!"

Lola’s words were very sharp and dangerous. She was trying to plant a seed of hatred in Tunde's mind. She wanted him to become very furious with Bisi. She wanted him to believe that his wife was a wild, deceitful woman who would destroy her own favorite dress just to cause trouble. Lola’s ultimate plan was to break their marriage completely so that she could have Tunde all to herself. She smiled inside her heart because she thought her big lie was working perfectly.

Tunde looked at Lola.

He stood completely still under her tight grip. He did not pull his arm away from her fingers. He did not shake her off. He just looked down at her face with his dark, deep eyes. He watched the way her mouth moved as she told the lies. He watched the fake tears running down her face. He listened to every single word she said about Bisi and the red ink.

He did not say a single word.

His mouth was shut tight. He did not scream, he did not shout, and he did not ask any questions. He did not say "Why did she do it?" or "Are you sure?" He was as quiet as the midnight air. Lola looked at his mouth, waiting for him to say something angry about Bisi. But nothing came out of Tunde's lips. The room was only filled with the sound of Lola's loud, fake sobbing.

His face was very calm.

There was no anger on his brow. There was no sadness in his eyes. His face looked like a peaceful lake on a quiet morning. He did not look like a man who had just heard that his wife was a monster. He looked like a man who already knew a big secret. His calmness was very strange and very heavy. It was a calmness that could make a guilty person feel very nervous. Lola looked at his calm face, and for a short moment, a small chill of fear ran down her spine. Why was he not shouting? Why was he so still? She did not understand his silence, so she decided to cry even louder to keep her lie alive.

Just then, Bisi walked into the room from the bedroom.

The wooden door of the bedroom opened with a soft sound. Bisi stepped out into the hallway and walked into the sitting room. She had been inside her bedroom, trying to rest her weary head after a long day of sadness. She had heard the loud crash of the glass cup breaking on the floor.

She had also heard the loud, noisy crying of her friend Lola. She wanted to know what was happening in her house. She was wearing her simple house clothes, and her hair was tied back.

She saw her ruined dress and gasped in horror.

Bisi stopped walking the moment she reached the carpet. Her eyes went straight to the sofa. She saw her beautiful, favorite white dress covered in the thick, dark red ink. She saw the ink dripping down onto the cushions. She saw the ugly stain that looked like a big wound on the cloth. Her breath caught in her throat. A loud gasp came out of her mouth, and she covered her lips with both of her hands.

Tears of real sorrow rushed into her eyes. That dress was her most precious clothing. It was the dress Tunde bought for her out of pure love. Seeing it ruined in such an ugly way broke her heart into pieces. She felt a deep pain in her chest. She could not understand how a bottle of red ink could end up on her dress. It looked like a nightmare.

She looked at Tunde with wide eyes.

She turned her head and stared at her husband. Her eyes were round and large, filled with shock, confusion, and fear. She saw Lola holding his arm and crying. She saw the broken glass on the floor. She looked at Tunde because she wanted him to tell her what was going on. She wanted him to tell her who did this terrible deed to her dress. She felt completely lost in her own living room. She felt like everyone was looking at her, but she was entirely innocent.

Lola pointed at Bisi and kept crying louder.

As soon as Lola saw Bisi walk into the room, she knew she had to push her lie even harder. She lifted her right hand and pointed her finger directly at Bisi’s face. She looked at Tunde and screamed through her fake tears. "Look at her, Tunde! Look at her face! She has come back to see the damage she made! She is pretending to be shocked, but she is the one who poured the dark red ink! She is a liar!"

Lola’s voice became very high and screechy. She made her body shake violently, pretending to be terrified of Bisi. She kept making loud weeping noises, trying to fill the room with chaotic sound. She wanted to confuse Tunde’s mind with her loud voice so that he would not listen to anything Bisi had to say. Bisi stood there in total shock, listening to her best friend tell such a massive, wicked lie against her. Bisi’s mouth was open, but she could not find the words to defend herself. The room was full of noise, accusations, and bitter tears.

Tunde raised his hand to stop the noise.

He lifted his big, strong hand high into the air. He did it with a lot of power and authority. He did not shout "Quiet!" and he did not stamp his foot. He just held his hand up, palm facing outward. The gesture was so strong and serious that Lola’s voice stopped instantly. Her fake cries died away in her throat. She lowered her finger and stepped back a little bit, looking at Tunde with sudden worry. Bisi also stayed completely quiet, watching her husband. The chaotic noise vanished, and a heavy, deep silence fell over the sitting room once more. You could only hear the slow drip of the ink onto the sofa. Drip. Drop.

He walked straight to the large flower vase in the corner.

Tunde turned his body away from Lola. He did not look at Bisi, and he did not look at the ruined dress on the sofa. He took long, steady steps across the room. Walk, walk, walk. His shoes made a firm sound on the floor. He walked past the table, past the chairs, and went directly to the dark corner of the room. He stood right in front of the tall, beautifully decorated flower vase.

He reached out his hand and put his fingers deep between the thick green leaves of the fake flowers. He knew exactly what was hiding inside the vase. He knew that a secret eye had been watching the whole room while he was away in the kitchen. He knew that the truth was sitting right there, recorded in high detail.

Lola watched him with big eyes, her heart stopping in her chest. She did not know what he was doing in the corner. Bisi also watched him, completely confused by his actions. Tunde’s hand wrapped around the small, black mobile phone. He began to lift it out of the vase, his face still very calm and very serious. The hidden eye was coming out into the light.

What will the video show them when Tunde finally takes the hidden phone out to play the secret recording for everyone to see clearly in the very next room right now for good today?

Do you think Lola will try to run away when Tunde plays the video recording?

How will Bisi react when she hears Lola's wicked words captured clearly on the phone?

Will Tunde forgive Lola for trying to destroy his beautiful marriage with red ink, or will he kick her out of the house forever?
