Episode 7: The Ink Trap
Can one terrible mistake change the fate of three people forever today?
The evening air was cool outside, but inside the house, everything felt hot and tense. The sitting room was very dark because the lights were turned off. The only illumination came from the street lamps through the glass window pane. The shadows on the wall looked like big, silent monsters waiting in the corners. Tunde was still standing inside the small kitchen, holding his glass of cold water. He was completely quiet, not making a single sound. In the corner of the sitting room, the mobile phone was hidden inside the large flower vase. The camera lens was peeking out just enough to see the whole room clearly. It was recording everything in total silence.
Lola stood over the clean white dress. She was standing right next to the soft sofa where the garment was resting. She looked down at the soft white cloth with very mean eyes. The dress was a truly beautiful item. It was Bisi's favorite dress in the whole world. It was completely clean and sparkling white, looking as bright as a fresh piece of paper. Tunde had bought this beautiful dress for Bisi as a special love gift. Bisi loved it so much that she only wore it on special days. She had placed it carefully on the sofa so she could wear it the next morning. But Lola did not care about Bisi's happiness. Lola was filled with jealousy and deep anger. She wanted to destroy everything that Bisi loved.
Lola held the glass bottle tightly in her right hand. The small bottle was completely filled with dark red ink. The ink looked thick and scary in the dim light of the sitting room. Lola looked at the red liquid, and then she looked back at the beautiful white fabric. She knew that what she was about to do would cause a lot of trouble. She knew it would make her friend Bisi cry many bitter tears. But that was exactly what she wanted. She wanted to see Bisi sad and broken. She wanted to ruin the peace of this home forever.
Slowly, Lola lifted her arm up into the air. She held her hand directly above the center of the clean white dress. Her fingers did not shake at all. Her face was cold and hard like stone. She did not feel any pity for Bisi or Tunde. She took a deep breath, and then she tipped the bottle forward. She poured the thick red ink all over the beautiful cloth.
The dark red liquid rushed out of the mouth of the glass bottle in a heavy stream. It fell through the air and hit the sparkling white fabric with a soft, splashing sound. The moment the ink touched the dress, the beauty of the cloth was gone. The ink did not just stay in one small spot. It began to spread out very quickly across the fabric. It soaked deep into the clean white threads, moving outwards in every direction. The ink spread like a large blood stain, ruining the dress completely. The bright, clean look of the favorite garment was totally destroyed under the dark red puddle. It looked terrible and messy. It looked like a beautiful thing had been ruined by an evil hand.
Lola stood still and watched the red ink spread farther and farther. She did not turn her eyes away from the sofa. She enjoyed watching the damage happen right in front of her. She felt a wave of dark joy inside her heart. She was happy because her bad deed was complete. The dress was totally ruined, and no amount of soap or water could ever make it white again. The dark red stain was there to stay forever.
Lola laughed a quiet, wicked laugh. The sound of her laughter was very low and very creepy in the silent sitting room. It sounded like the giggle of a bad character in a scary bedtime story. She felt very proud of herself because she thought she was the cleverest person in the world. She truly believed that nobody was watching her. She thought she had done the perfect crime in the dark.
She did not know the hidden camera was listening to her. She had no idea that Tunde's mobile phone was resting inside the large flower vase in the corner of the room. The little camera lens was still watching her from between the green leaves. The silent eye of the camera recorded her face, her hands, the bottle, and the ruined dress. It recorded the way she stood and the way she moved. It also recorded the creepy sound of her quiet laughter. The phone was saving every bit of proof into its memory, and Lola was completely unaware of it.
Lola leaned close to the ruined dress on the sofa. She bent her upper body forward until her nose was just a few inches away from the wet red stain. She wanted to look at the destruction very closely. As she stared at the ugly mess she had made, she began to talk out loud. She whispered to herself in a dark, clear voice. "Once Bisi sees this, she will think Tunde did it. They will fight again, and Tunde will be mine!"
Her words were loud and clear in the empty room. She spoke with a lot of malice and confidence. She had a very big and evil plan in her mind. She wanted Bisi to return home and believe that Tunde was the person who destroyed her favorite dress. She knew that Bisi and Tunde had been arguing a lot lately. She knew that Bisi was already feeling very angry and full of doubt. Lola knew that if Bisi saw her beautiful white dress ruined with red ink, she would become completely furious. Bisi would think that Tunde did it to hurt her feelings. They would start a massive fight, the biggest argument they had ever had. Lola believed that this giant fight would break their marriage apart forever. Then, when Tunde was lonely and crying, Lola would come to him and pretend to be a good friend. She would take Tunde for herself and become the queen of the house.
The hidden camera caught every single word she whispered. The microphone on Tunde's phone recorded her voice perfectly. Her secret plan was fully recorded on the video. The hidden eye now knew exactly why she had come into the house in the dark.
Lola stood up straight and looked down at her hands. She wanted to make sure that everything looked like a natural accident. She did not want anyone to suspect that she had broken into the house to do a bad thing. She wanted the scene to look like a moment of carelessness or a sudden burst of anger from someone who lived in the home.
She placed the empty ink bottle on the floor right below the sofa. She was very careful as she set it down. She tilted the glass bottle so it lay on its side near the leg of the couch. She wanted it to look like the bottle had simply fallen over by mistake from a nearby table or from someone's hand. She stepped back a little bit and looked at her work. The white dress was ruined with a huge red stain, and the empty bottle was lying on the floor. To anyone who walked in, it would look like a terrible mishap. Lola felt very happy with her setup. She thought her trap was perfect.
Suddenly, the absolute silence of the house came to an end. Lola froze completely. Her body became stiff, and her breath caught in her throat. Her heart started to beat very fast like a loud drum. Thump, thump, thump. She heard heavy footsteps coming from the direction of the kitchen. The sounds were very clear and very close. Walk, walk, walk. Someone was stepping heavily on the kitchen floor tiles, and the footsteps were moving straight toward the sitting room.
It was Tunde walking back into the sitting room. He had finished drinking his glass of cold water in the kitchen, and now he was returning to the main part of the house. He was not walking quietly anymore. He was walking with normal, heavy steps because he wanted Lola to hear him approaching. He wanted to see what was happening in his living room.
Lola gasped loudly in the dark. A wave of intense fear rushed through her entire body. She realized that she was not alone in the house. She had believed that everyone was out, or that Tunde was deep asleep in his bedroom. She never expected him to walk out of the kitchen at this exact second. Panic filled her mind, and her hands began to shake violently. If Tunde caught her standing next to the ruined dress with the empty bottle on the floor, he would know the truth instantly. He would know she was the enemy who was destroying his home. Her evil plan would fail completely, and she would be in big trouble.
She quickly stepped away from the sofa. She scrambled backward as fast as her legs could carry her. She tried to put a lot of distance between herself and the messy sofa. She moved to the center of the room, trying to look like she had just arrived. She needed a new plan right now. She needed a big lie to save herself from being caught by Tunde.
In less than a second, Lola changed the look on her face. She was very good at pretending to be good when she was actually bad. She put on her best fake crying face. She closed her eyes tightly and forced herself to squeeze out real tears. She made her mouth twist into a sad, trembling shape. She began to make loud sobbing noises, covering her face with her hands. She wanted to look like a sweet, innocent friend who had just walked into the house and discovered a horrible disaster. She wanted Tunde to think that she was heartbroken and shocked by the sight of the ruined dress.
Tunde entered the room and stopped in total shock. He stepped through the kitchen doorway and walked into the sitting room. He was still holding his glass of cold water in his right hand. He took one look at the sofa, and then he stopped moving completely. He stood as still as a stone wall. His eyes became incredibly wide and round as he stared at the center of the room.
There, right in front of his face, was the big mess. Bisi's favorite white dress was sitting on the sofa, but it was completely covered in a giant, wet puddle of dark red ink. The ink was still dripping down the sides of the white cloth, staining the soft cushions of the couch. On the floor below the sofa, the empty glass bottle lay on its side, just where Lola had placed it.
What will Tunde say when he sees the huge mess on the white dress on the sofa right now in front of him very soon?
