PRIVIOUSLY ON REINCARNATION

“Hmmmmm!” She exclaimed. “Their deaths were all mysterious and painful. Nnediya died on her way back from the farm with her three daughters, they were all stung by bees. The bees entered their nostrils, ears and mouths while they were shouting and calling for help. People who came around for their rescue only watched helplessly and the bees never got close to them. After they were stung dead, maggots at their carcasses and only their bones were left”. Olamma said.

“What a painful way to die, and the second wife; how did she die?”. Dinta asked.

“Another mysterious death”. Ola answered.

CONTINUATION

“Hmmmmmm!”. Please tell me Olam (my ola). Dinta who then was enjoying every bit of her story said.

“Before I tell you about Nwaka the second wife, how she was killed in the stream with her daughter. The bones of Nnediya, the first wife and her daughters were buried in her hut, but the ground rejected it severally each time they were buried. They were buried seven times and each of these time, the ground would reject them, they were abominable bones and the ground of Umueke forbids such bones”. She told Dinta.

“But you were dead at the time, buried alive according to you with your son. How come you knew all these?”. Dinta asked.

“From the day my son and I were buried, we both have not rested. We dwelt amongst people, we saw everything they did, but were never seen. We had the powers to kill whoever we wanted to, but we allowed the angry gods to avenge our deaths”. She replied.

“Hmmmmm! This is mysterious indeed”. Dinta said. “So Ola, how did Nwaka die?”. He asked.

“Nwaka, his second wife had gone to the stream to wash with her daughter. She had just a daughter at the time. The stream of Umueke was known to be peaceful, so anyone goes to the stream anytime of the day. In order for her to finish up on time and be home early for farming duties with your grandfather, she left for the stream before the first c--k crow”. “I’m beginning to be scared”. Dinta interjected. “You’re a man, be brave”. She said and continued. “She had gotten to the stream with her daughter and was washing and singing folk songs. Her daughter sat by the bank of the river, looking at the moonlight from the waters. She sat right in front of Nwaka and was playing with the waters. Nwaka felt at her back, someone coming, she heard the still and quiet waters making some unusual sounds. She turned the first time and saw nothing, then she continued singing and washing. Few minutes later, she felt same sound, turned back and saw nothing. Again, she continued with the singing and washing the sound came the third time, her daughter’s focus was now behind her, Nwaka noticed the unusual way her daughter focused gaze behind her, then she knew something was wrong, she slowly tried to move away from the stream, but felt sharpness on her neck. It was a deadly beast, it plucked off her eyes and that of her daughter and slowly at their meat by gradually removing parts of their bodies while they were still alive, they both shouted and called for help, but got none. Two great hunters of Umueke, who were returning from hunting and decided to drink from the early morning calm waters where the ones who saw it all and took the news to Nweke, your grandfather”. She narrated.

“Mysterious and very painful, but she deserved it. The third, how did she die?’. He asked.

“Egodiya (husband’s wealth) was one of the most hardworking wives Nweke your great grandfather married. She lived her name Egodiya, she was very instrumental to the wealth of Nweke. She worked in the farm tireleslly and was a very also a very good hunter. In her time, she killed many wiled animals that your great grandfather was unable to kill, but no one knew she killed them, not even our co wives, she gave a the credits to Nweke my husband”. “How did she die?”. Dinta asked again, interjecting. “Egodiya had two daughters, they were all asleep in her hut one peaceful night after the first rains of the year had dropped to cool the then hotness of the weather that wasn’t allowing them good sleep. There were shouts coming from her hut with her children, were gradually eaten up by rats numbering over a thousand. Their deaths were slow and painful”.

“What was Nweke and other wives doing while his the women died one after another?” Asked Dinta.

“It had dawned on Nweke that all was not well, he then realized I was lied against by my co wives and that I was innocent. One day, he came to my hut where my son and I were buried and pleaded asking for forgiveness. He wept like a child, a difficult thing with great men of his type. I felt the pains in him and the total repentance, I had wanted to wipe off completely the lineage of Nweke. But had a change of mind after he begged for forgiveness. For the remaining three wives, haven sensed danger went to Nweke to confess. They told him all that happened and he grieved them more”. In his words.

“Oh! Olamma my wife, my good wife. The only one who gave me a male child. I would have given you the opportunity to say something when you were craving to speak, I was so carried away by the coin with the face of Queen Eliza. I attached more importance to the coin than you my beloved wife. Please forgive me Ola my beautiful wife”. He pleaded with me again crying. “And that night, while other wives were asleep, he slaughtered Ego the fought wife, slitting her throat with a sharp knife and buried her in her hut. Other wives woke up and did not see her, yet they were so afraid to ask of her whereabouts, even after weeks of her absence. It was same way he killed the fifth wife Ogoo. One was left, Njideka, if I had allowed him kill Njideka, that would have been the end of Nweke’s lineage. Njideka had a daughter at the time, so I appeared to Nweke my husband in real life and pleaded with him not to kill Njideka, but rather go in with her and have a son that would continue his lineage. He agreed and after many months, Njide had a son. Then Nweke killed her and her daughter same way he killed others after the boy had turn ten. I allowed him take care of his son whom I asked him to name after my late son Dinta”. There was an expression of shock from Dinta. ” Yes, Dinta; you heard me clearly”. She said smiling.

“I’m I also same Dinta?”. He asked.

“That you will know when the time is right”. She answered.

“How did my great grandfather die?”.

“Before I would tell you how he died, let me tell you this. I vowed never to depart from his lineage until I find rest, so in each of his generation, I would return and die severally. When I discover the woman is getting old and weak, I would allow Dinta to return and continue the lineage of Nweke”. She said as Dinta still expressed great shock. “Now, back to your question how Nweke was killed”.

“Yes Olamma, I want to know”. Dinta said.

“He was old at the time and Dinta had gotten married, I didn’t want to allow him witness the joy of a grandfather. One afternoon, while he was resting under a tree in his compound, I caused a heavy branch of the tree to fall on him. He was buried in the ground by the force of the tree. Even when the branch was lifted, his body was not seen. But from generation to generation, I had allowed his sons to prosper.”. She concluded.

“Very sad one indeed, but they deserved what they got. But Ola, what can I do to make your spirit rest in peace?”. Dinta asked.

“Someone has been troubling me right from time and from his lineage have I been disturbed. But it is time to silence him forever, even though he is powerful”. Answered Ola.

“Who is he?”. Dinta asked.

“He is your friend, close and dear to your heart. There has been this bond between you two from childhood, you have been the reason I have spared him. Declare him an enemy and I shall deal with him, he plots evil against you as we speak”. Ola said.

“You are talking about Dike my bosom friend?”

“Yes, Dike he is”. Answered Ola

“He has first declared himself my enemy, so he remains one”. Dinta said

“Good, the battle line is drawn, but be careful, for Dike is very powerful”. She warned.

“Can I ask something”. Dinta inquired.

“Go on Dinta”. She replied.

“I’m I your son Dinta?”. He asked.

“That I will let you know when the time is right”. She answered and disappeared, then Dinta woke up.
