PRIVIOUSLY ON REINCARNATION

Dike was in his hut sleeping and had a dream. Same old woman who appeared to his wife Adanna with the resemblance of Olamma appeared to him also.

“I am now ready to tell you why I have been returning to your family in the last one hundred years, I am Olamma”. She said.

“I am listening Olamma”. He replied.

CONTINUATION

The old woman came closer to Dinta and continued her message.

“Several years ago, I got married to Nweke, your great grandfather. Nweke was a great hunter and farmer, I was his seventh and last wife. He loved and cherished me so much that he never allowed me like other wives, follow him to the farm or hunting. He pampered me like a baby, even when I was willing to work. I wasn’t lazy, I was hardworking and always willing to work. Each time they went to the farm, because he would go with other six wives, I would remain home cooking and washing, even against his wish. He would return and expect other wives to enter the kitchen and start cooking, I would rather go in and dish food to serve everyone. He would get provoked and ask me never to do a thing like that. This continued for several years and other wives began to show signs of hatred for me. None of them gave birth to a male child, I was the first to give him a male child. This compounded mysery and their hatred for me increased”. Dinta listened with so much interest.

“Your great grandfather Nweke, after I gave birth to the male child increased hid love towards me and showered me with the best of gifts. In your great grandfather’s hut was coin of gold given to him by the white men who came to trade palm nut in those years. It was a coin with the head of the Queen of England, he cherished the coin and never allowed anyone get close to it. My co wives plotted against me and stole the coin and hid it in my bag. Your great grandfather found out it wasn’t where he kept it and it became a huge problem in the house. He was so furious after he had asked everyone and all denied knowledge of knowing where it was. He called us one after another into hid obi (resting hut) starting from the first wife, to myself; yet, no one admitted. I was innocent and never knew anything about it. In your great grand father’s words”.

“I married you all and since I got married to you, never for one day have I had anything missing. Why now? I have called you all one after another to tell me the truth and no one is opening up, we all live in these huts alone, none of my visitors are allowed in. I attend to them all here in my obi (resting hut), if the coin is missing, then one of you took it. I ask again before taking my final decision which will be so drastic, who among you you my coin with the Queen of England face on it, Queen Eliza?”. Everyone again denied knowledge of the missing coin, including myself.

Your great grandfather became more furious when no one admitted knowing anything about the missing coin. Then the first wife made a suggestion according to their plan. In her words.

“My husband, I am the most senior wife here and since you got married to me and other wives started coming in, you have never had any of your valuable(s) missing. This only happened when the last had come in, I would suggest everyone’s bags are thoroughly searched. If found in anyone’s bag, you can then know what to do”. She suggested and other wives applauded her and gave their support, including me.

Her word sounded pleasing to your great grandfather and he acted according to the suggestion, but before he acted, he made a pronounciation. In his words.

“I thank you for this good suggestion Nnediya my first wife, this is why you are the mother to other wives. This is what will happen to whoever the coin is found in her bag. If by any chance or means the missing coin with the face of Queen Eliza is found in your bag, you shall be buried alive with your child or children. This is how much I value the coin and for you to have the mind to steal in my house, you and your child or children shall be buried alive. No one goes into her hut until I am done with the search”. “He said as everyone echoed yes in acceptance, including myself”.

“But I started sensing danger when I saw other wives talking to themselves in low voices and making jest of me. I sensed a gang up and thought my husband, your great grandfather would do same. He got up and went into our huts one after another starting from Nnediya’s, the first wife. He came out from Nnediya’s after several minutes of search and nothing was found. He went into the second wife’s hut, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and found nothing after spending so much time. They all kept me at a distance, looking and laughing at me while the search was ongoing. Then he went into my hut, he didn’t spend the number of time he spent in others, he came out almost immediately with the coin in his hand and was very mad. He ordered his slaves to dig a pit in my hut and bury my son and I in it. But before my son and I were buried, I laid a curse”. She said and bowed her head in tears.

“What was the curse you laid?”. Dinta asked.

She wept and continued.

“I loved my husband, your great grandfather. He was a very nice man. What happened wasn’t his fault, but for the fact that he refused to give me a listening ear, I also was furious. I told my co wives, starting from Nnediya that just the way I would be (was) buried with my son, same way will they not live long with their children and would all die a mysterious death. And to Nweke my husband, I told him his death would be ten times more painful than mine and that I would inflict great pains to his generations unborn. He would have no generation that would know peace and joy all their lifetime”. She said.

“How did they all die?”. Dinta asked.

“Hmmmmm!” She exclaimed. “Their deaths were all mysterious and painful. Nnediya died on her way back from the farm with her three daughters, they were all stung by bees. The bees entered their nostrils, ears and mouths while they were shouting and calling for help. People who came around for their rescue only watched helplessly and the bees never got close to them. After they were stung dead, maggots ate their carcasses and only their bones were left”. Olamma said.

“What a painful way to die, and the second wife; how did she die?”. Dinta asked.

“Another mysterious death”. Ola answered.
