PRIVIOUSLY ON REINCARNATION

“Be still Dinta, no one comes to Agbalanze trembling. The child Olamma is not evil, but powerful. She only seeks one thing”. Agbalanze said again.

“What does she seek great one”. Asked Dinta.

“That I cannot tell, but go and return again in seven days, you shall be told what to do”. He said and vanished with the fire, then the dwarf led Dinta out of the cave.

Dinta got home worried and could not sleep all night, his wife was in her hut deeply asleep with the child. Then Ola, a child of some days old crawled to Dinta in his hut, he was shocked at what he saw.

“Why did you go to see Agbalanze?”. She asked.

CONTINUATION

Dinta, full of surprise and became nervous ran to his wife’s hut; there, he met Olamma lying peacefully asleep. He tapped the wife quietly and woke her up, the moment she got up, Ola also woke and started crying; seeking the mother’s attention. She carried her and stood up, because she was crying aloud. The more Dinta tries talking to Uloma, the louder she cried. If he makes a move to leave, she would stop crying and when he comes back, she would start all over again. He then left and went back to his room and was left thinking and worried.

“How did she know I went to see Agbalanze?”. He asked himself speaking out. “This girl is indeed a witch, she is evil and I have to do something to stop her from coming to my family. But let me wait until I hear from Agbalanzs”. He said and tried to sleep because it was still late in the night; but sleep was far from him. He stayed awake all night thinking of what next to do.

“How are you and your family?”. Dike, Dinta’s friend asked welcoming him to his hut. Dike means strong one, he represents his name because he was indeed strong and brave. “You look worried”. He said.

“Who won’t be worried, when you have a child as evil as Olamma; a child who has refused to go away from my family. I am yet to know why the gods chose to punish me by giving me such a child”. A worried Dinta responded.

“And what have you done to make her stop coming, you have failed to heed to my advise. I told you, when next she dies, cut her into pieces and bury her; in that way she won’t return again. This is what is done to stubborn Ogbanje’s like her”. Dike told him.

“I am sure she has come to stay this time, but if she dies again, I would do as you just said. I really have to stop her from coming back again, it is really tormenting my wife and her. The pains she goes through during labour is always unbearable, I feel for her”. “Just yesterday, I went to see Agbalanze to seek solution from him”. Dinta said.

“Good one, what did Agbalanze say?”. Dike asked.

“He asked me to come back in seven days, that he would tell me what to do. But do you know the baffling thing”.

“What is the baffling thing?”.

When I got home, after I had finished eating. I laid in my hut to rest, then I saw Olamma in my room”. Dinta explained.

“How come? Did your wife bring her to your room?”. Asked a surprised Dike.

“No Dike my friend, she crawled to the room”.

Dike expressing shock ” Crawled? How could a child of some days old crawl?”. He asked amazed.

“I was as surprised as you are myself, she didn’t only just crawl, she asked why I went to see Agblanze”. Dinta explained again.

“She spoke to you?”. Dike asked still amazed.

“She did my brother, I was shocked to my bone marrow”.

“Did you discuss your going to Agbalanze with your wife Uloma”. Asked Dike.

“I didn’t even discuss it with myself not to talk of my wife, it was a decision I took and at once followed it up. I never knew I would be going there”. Dinta said.

“That child is evil indeed and we must do something to stop her from coming”. Once she falls sick again, come to me, I shall tell you what to do. Meanwhile, I shall go with you to Agbalanze’s”. Dike said.

“Dike nwannem (my brother), the one who killed a lion and other wild animals. You are a friend indeed. I trust you, I know what you can do. I will definately let you know when she falls sick again. Please, my throat is dry, do you have mazi Ike’s palm wine?”. He asked.

Dike chuckles “Of course you know that is my favourite, Mazi Ike left few minutes before you arrived. I have it fresh, let me go get it”. He said and left to get the palm wine.

“Odogwu Dike”. Dinta hailed. ” I know you don’t lack such in your house. Hurry my brother, let me drink and forget that evil child.

NIGHT, DIKE'S HUT

“Stay away from things that does not concern you, else you shall be killed”. Olamma said to Dike who was in his hut sleeping. He quickly jerked up, looked around and saw little Ola beside his bed.

“You, evil child. What do you want from me? Listen up, I am not Dinta; if you dare me, I will not only kill you, I would make sure you do not return again”. Dike warned.

“I come in peace to give you a peaceful warning, do not dare me Dike, do not dare me”. She warned again and disappeared.

“You are too small Olamma, I dare you. You can’t do me nothing, I am not Dinta for your information. I will crush you”. He boasted and went back to sleep.

SEVEN DAYS LATER

Dinta and Dike left for the hills of Agbalanze well armed, ready to crush whatever stands on their way.

They got to the hills and again, the dwarf ushered them in and Agbalanze appeared in a flame of fire.

“Welcome Dinta and Dike, great sons of Umunze”. Agalanze said

“We greet you wisest of all”. They responded.

“You do not need all these weapons, Olamma is peaceful and not for war. She is as old as anyone of you, she chooses the womb to return”.

“What does she want wise one?”. Asked Dinta.

“Many years ago, someone in your lineage offended her greatly and she seeks revenge. She has been returning to your family, you are not the first she returned from. Olamma is over a hundred years old, she is wise and peaceful”.

“What do I do to appease her, what is the wrong done to her?. Dinta asked again.

“Go home Dinta, just follow her gently, you shall understand what to do when the time comes”. He advised.

“I would have truly loved to know what to do so I will do them, and also know the wrong done to her in the past. Olamma is really a problem to my wife and I. Dinta appealed.

“Go home my son, the ways of the spirits are not the ways of mere mortals. Go home, you shall understand”. Agbalanze said and vanished with the flame of fire. Dinta and Dike were led out of the cave by the dwarf and made their way back home.

BUSH PATH

“Why is Agbalanze finding it difficult to tell me about Olamma?. He was the one who asked that I return after seven days and I was truly hoping he would proffer me a solution”. An angry Dinta said.

“Calm down my friend, we must find a way to end Olamma’s return, with or without the help of Agbalanze. Calm down and let’s go take some fresh palm wine”. Dike advised as they walked home.

That night, while Dike was asleep, Olamma visited again.
