My mother did not specify how much time it took them to settle down but she told us how much she suffered. After they got to Skornia, she looked for work at the embassy and many other companies that belonged to Nigerians like them but unfortunately she couldn’t get any. They either want bribe or her body and she was not ready to give them any.

“You see I am fed up with the corrupt practices of these people, I never knew this is what people go through in order to get a job then. If they make employment this hard why the need to go to school then? Just tender your body or a token and you will become a high ranking officer.”

Diline complained to Eve one evening, she came back from her job hunting tired and frustrated. Eve scoffed.

“And what do you expect from them when our leaders are the same? No one has the fear of God anymore. All we have is power seeking and money hungry politicians who know of only themselves.”

Diline protested.

“I quite disagree with you on that. There are still people who are good politicians that seek after the welfare of their people. .y father was one, all through his life, he was a very good man.”

Eve laughed sarcastically.

“Speak for your belly my friend. The overly good ones are the most dangerous ones.”
Diline frowned.

“And what are you insinuating?”
Eve chuckled.

“Nothing o please don’t kill me with that look.”
Diline hissed.

“Did you cook or not else let me find the way to my bed.”

Eve clapped in surprise.

“Hahaa Diline it has become fight? Abeg no vex o Daddy’s baby. There is still some rice left in the pot leave some for me.”
Diline nodded.

“See your mouth, come carry am na.”

Eve stood and Diline ran to carry the pot, they both struggled with it before breaking down in laughter.

For almost a year both of them worked hard to support themselves, Diline finally got a job as a chef in an hotel, this helped Eve to start her part-time schooling. After much struggle things began to get better for them both but sometimes good things don’t last.

“Eve, Eve where are you?”

Diline rushed inside their one room apartment with joy. Apart from a few scattered furniture and their belongings, the room was half empty.
Eve yawned and woke up frowning.

“Will you please stop shouting, I am on the bed.”

Diline switched on the light and exclaimed.

“Ewo, chineke, see this lazy woman o, I am out there working my a-s off, you are here sleeping.”

Eve hissed.

“Abeg forget that one joor. You work pass me ne? I am not feeling so fine today so my boss told me to come home and rest.”

Diline gasped and quickly sat beside her. She began to check her temperature.

“Are you okay now? Sorry, I was just joking I know you are not lazy.”

“It’s okay, I think it’s malaria but I got some drugs from Oga Chemist and I feel better now. So, why were you shouting like a mad woman?”
Diline smiled and showed her a letter.

“You know that rich part of the city called ‘Royal Estate’? They have contacted the hotel I work in to send estimates of what they will need for a big party, the one the call rich fest. So after my boss finished the estimates, he gave the job to me. I will be the one to organize everything and all tips are mine.”
Eve gasped.

“And you know the best part? I will be getting ten percent of the total money for service if I do well. Isn’t that great?”
Eve knelt down.

“Thank you Jesus. This is good news. When is it coming up?”
Diline smiled.

[B] “In a month’s time. By next week, I will start working on the place and how to go about the decorations and food.”
Eve chuckled.

“And if you are lucky too, get a rich man at the party. That place will be filled with them.”
Diline hissed.

“Idiot, carry me go meet one na. Abeg free me jare.”

They both jested at each other’s expense.
