Eve was a veteran worker in the cleaning company, she was considered one of the longest working worker who had ever served the company. She was said to have started the work in her teenage years. She was also respected by others in the company, she was a satisfied woman who only earned for clothing and feeding, she had no family to care for and she had no complaints either. Diline quickly became friends with Eve and they both shared thoughts together. Diline taught Eve how to save what little she earned for rainy days while Eve taught Diline many hand skills she never learned.

There was undisguised hatred for Eve by many of the female workers in the company because of her beauty. Many times she narrowly escaped rape while other times men queue because of her. Diline suffered much more, she was an epitome of beauty and also an agile worker this attracted men to her like bees.

All these summed up together made them both targets for evil rumours and discussions. Finally when the cleaning company bad had enough of bickering, fights and arguments all related to them, they were both fired. Life was cruel to both as they struggled to find a place in the world. Diline lost all hope of things ever getting better, she became more withdrawn, reserved and saddened. Eve tried all she could to help Diline but they all proved abortive.

“I am tired of this nonsense Diline, snap out of this stupidity.”

Eve raised her hands in exasperation.
“Why are you doing this? When there is life, there is hope.”

Diline sighed and looked pitifully at Eve.

“Maybe for you but not for me. For three years now, I have been holding it in, enduring and hoping that things will get better but what do I get, nothing. My parents died and left me all alone, God just turned his back on me, what else do I gain if not misery.”

“Hold it right here Diline.”

Eve snapped at her.

“You don’t know what God has done for you. You have only suffered for three years and you are complaining this much but I have been suffering since birth. Because my mother died, I was placed in the care of my evil aunt who used me like rag. Her children are all in high positions, professionals in different fields but I am here suffering, I had to run from her when it looked like she would sell me for money. So who do you think should give up between us? You are an ingrate Diline and you should be punished for that, you have a bachelor and masters degree which can earn you a good job if you are patient enough but you are still complaining.”

She began to pace their small room agitatedly.
Tears welled up in Diline’s eyes, she held her head in her hands and began to sob uncontrollably. Eve sighed and rocked her while she crowd, she offered to her and patted her back.

“It’s okay, stop crying please things will definitely get better.”

She wiped her tears.

“I am sorry Eve, I didn’t mean to, I just didn’t see a way out. I am not cut out for this hard life.”

Eve nodded and they both allowed silence to reign.
