Must Read: The Player

Kiki was with Ezekiel when we got back into the flat, Odogwu had parted ways as we entered the estate.

“How was your paper, Twinnie mi?” Kiki asked, walking up to me, excitedly.

“It went well,” I replied.

“Hope you prayed before you started and after the papers? It’s important that Jesus takes control of your answers,” Ezekiel said without an inch of care.

I ignored him and walked to my room. I heard Bauchi greet Kiki but she didn’t reply, afterwards he entered the room and undressed. He wasn’t looking at me, he looked sad and defeated, I felt bad for him.

“You know say tomorrow na Kiki birthday?” he finally said.

“Are you serious?”
“Yes, her birthday was supposed to be special, now she doesn’t even talk to me.”

“You should get her a gift,”
I suggested.

He was lost in his thoughts for a while.

“You think I messed up going to Lekan’s house?”

There are times I really liked Bauchi, most times had to do with his selfless nature, the way he became a gentleman when Hanatu was around or how he treated the goat with respect, I even liked how he pranked Ezekiel every once in a while but the issue with Lekan was low and reproachable.

“You should apologise to him, Kiki is not your property”, I said.

“True, my good man,” he replied soberly.

“And you should apologise to Kiki before she finds out.”

He walked up to me to give me a hug.

“You are like the brother I never had,” he said.

“Bros?”
“Yes, my good man?”
“I want you to leave. Kiki doesn’t want you and I don’t either.”

He was speechless for a while, I expected him to let go off me but he didn’t. He isn’t held me tighter.

“But I am sorry,” he said.

“I’m sorry too,” I replied.

I freed myself from him and walked out to meet Kiki who was cooking Okra soup in the kitchen.

“I just told Bauchi to leave, I should have waited to tell you but I had my mind made up,” I said to her.

“You are sure that is what you want?”
“Yes,”
I said.

“Are you sad?” she asked.

“Very”.

“What did he do to you?”
“Sorry I can’t say”

Bauchi met us in the kitchen with his bag packed. The images of Odogwu with the gun were still very clear.

“My Good man, thanks for the hospitality,” he said.

“You are welcome, bros” I said.

“Kiki, I hope you think of me.”

She turned her back to him. In the background Ezekiel was singing out songs of praise.

“Fifi, take care of her,” he said this and left. By his side was the goat we had grown to love.
