Prestige High School – Next Morning
Luis spotted Hazel by the front steps the moment he walked through the gates, and something in him — some tired, cowardly part he’d been carrying around for weeks — finally gave out.
He crossed the courtyard fast, grabbed her hand, and pulled her toward the quiet corner behind the science building before she could even finish her greeting.
“Luis, what—”
“I love you,” he blurted, the words tumbling out before his nerves could stop them. “I’ve loved you for a while now, and I know we’re young, and I know it’s probably stupid to say it like this, standing behind a building with grass stains on my shoes, but I couldn’t keep not saying it.”
Hazel stared at him for a long, silent moment.
Then she laughed — bright, delighted, disbelieving — and threw her arms around his neck. “I love you too, you idiot. Took you long enough.”
He kissed her then, and it wasn’t clumsy or hesitant the way first kisses were supposed to be — it was warm and certain, like they’d both been waiting for permission to stop pretending.
A few feet away, Jason rounded the corner with Eloise trailing behind him, and for once, he didn’t say a single teasing word. He simply opened his arms wide, half-joking, fully expecting her to slap him the way she always did.
Eloise hugged him instead. Tight. Real.
He blinked, stunned, before wrapping his arms around her properly, and she pulled back just enough to steal a quick, soft kiss before darting off with a grin, leaving him standing there rubbing his mouth with one hand and his temple with the other, grinning like an idiot at nothing at all.

Morales Mansion – Same Day
Ron had stopped screaming hours ago. His voice had abandoned him somewhere in the endless gray hours of agony, and now he lay motionless in the pool of his own blood, unable even to flinch as the pain built toward something beyond anything a human body should have been capable of surviving.
His stomach convulsed violently.
His mouth opened on its own, and what came up wasn’t sound. It was blood, thick and dark, and behind it, impossibly, something more — his own body beginning to fail from the inside, turning against itself in ways too horrifying to name.
He didn’t die. Not yet. Not for hours more.
He simply lay there, alone, locked away in his own home, experiencing every last unbearable second of it.
