“You need to leave,” Celeste said again, arms crossed tight over her chest, refusing to let him see how badly her hands wanted to shake.

“I was threatened,” Peter said quickly, before she could turn away entirely. “Celeste, please, just let me say this once, and I’ll go if you still want me to. I owed money to men who don’t forgive debts quietly. I had to run, or you and Luis would have been in danger too. I told myself I was protecting you by disappearing.”

“You could have told me that then.”

“I was ashamed,” he admitted, voice breaking slightly. “I ran with what little I had left, and I invested it. Badly, for years. But eventually it grew. I built something out of nothing, the same way you did. I just—” he swallowed hard, “—I did it alone, and I let you do the same alone, and I know that’s unforgivable.”

“It is,” Celeste said flatly.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me today.”

“Good. Because I won’t.”

She turned on her heel, walking briskly back toward the kitchen entrance, refusing to let her staff catch even a glimpse of the tears already brimming hot at the corners of her eyes. She pressed the back of her hand hard against her mouth the moment she was out of sight, breathing through the ache in her chest until it passed.
