Episode 9: Three Big Secrets
The rain was falling very hard now. It was a cold rain that made everything look grey and sad. Mark Harrison stood next to his car with his heavy suitcase in his hand. He was ready to drive away and never look back. He wanted to leave all the lies behind him. He wanted to forget about the DNA papers and the secret diary. He wanted to forget about the woman who had tricked him for ten years. But just as he was about to open his car door, he heard a sound. It was a very small sound. It was a sob. A sob is the sound someone makes when they are crying and trying to be very quiet. It came from the big green bushes near the edge of the driveway. Mark felt his heart jump. He did not think twice. He dropped his heavy suitcase right into a puddle of muddy water. He did not care about his clothes or his books anymore. He ran toward the sound as fast as he could.
Mark reached the bushes and pushed the wet leaves aside with his hands. His heart stopped for a second when he saw what was inside. Tucked away in the dark, wet space was little Mia. She was his youngest child. She was only a few years old. She was sitting on the cold ground with her knees pulled up to her chest. Her favorite pink dress was soaked with rain and covered in dirt. She was shivering so hard that her whole body was shaking. Her face was very pale, and her eyes were wide and full of tears. She looked like a little bird that had fallen out of its nest in a big storm. She was terrified.
Mia had heard everything. She had heard the loud shouting in the kitchen. She had heard the sound of her mother crying. she had heard the words that no child should ever have to hear. She was so scared that she had run out of the house and hidden in the bushes. She wanted to disappear. Mark felt a wave of pain go through him. It was a different kind of pain than the anger he felt toward Linda. This was a pain of pure love and worry. He reached out his hands to her, but he stopped when he saw the look in her eyes.
"Mia," Mark whispered. His voice was shaking. "Baby, what are you doing out here? You are freezing."
Mia looked up at him. The rain was dripping off her nose and her hair. She looked at Mark for a long time. Then, she spoke in a tiny, broken voice that made the world feel like it was breaking too.
"Are you leaving us because we have bad blood, Daddy?" she asked.
The question hit Mark harder than anything else that had happened. It hit him harder than the hospital results. It hit him harder than the secret diary. It hit him even harder than seeing David on his porch. "Bad blood." Those were words she must have heard during the fight. She did not fully understand what they meant, but she knew they were bad. She thought there was something wrong with her. She thought she was broken inside. And she thought that because she was broken, her daddy did not want her anymore.
Mark felt like a knife had been pushed into his chest. He realized right then that the children had overheard the truth. They knew they were not biologically his. They knew that the man they called Daddy was not their real father by blood. They were sitting inside that house, or hiding in the bushes, thinking that their whole world was a lie. They were thinking that the man they loved was going to throw them away like trash because of a lab test.
In that moment, everything changed for Mark. He looked up at the big house. He saw the lights in the windows. He saw the shadow of Linda standing by the glass, watching him. She was still crying, but she stayed inside where it was warm. Then he looked down the street. He saw David’s car parked under a streetlamp. David was sitting in there, waiting for his chance to take a family he had not earned. David was a stranger who shared their blood, but he did not know their favorite colors. He did not know what they were afraid of at night. He did not know how to make them laugh when they were sad.
Mark looked back down at Mia. He saw her tiny hands and her wet face. He thought about the day she was born. He remembered holding her for the first time. He thought about the thousands of times he had tucked her into bed. He thought about the times he had held her hand when she was scared of the thunder. He realized something very important. He realized that blood only makes a person a relative. It is just a part of science. But love and diligence are what make a person a parent. Diligence means working hard and being there every single day.
Mark had been the one to hold them when they cried. He had been the one to teach them how to be kind. He had been the one to teach them right from wrong. He was the only father they had ever known. To these children, he was not a man with a matching blood type. He was their Daddy. He was their hero. He was their world. If he drove away now, he would be proving to them that blood was more important than love. He would be leaving them with a mother who lied and a stranger who was just a name in a box.
Mark reached down and picked Mia up. He pulled her out of the cold bushes and held her very close to his chest. He used his own body to shield her from the cold rain. He felt her tiny arms wrap around his neck and hold on tight. She was crying into his shoulder, and he felt her tears mixing with the rain on his skin. He felt her heart beating fast against his own.
"I am not leaving you, Mia," Mark whispered into her ear. He said it over and over again. "I will never leave you. You do not have bad blood. You are my daughter. You will always be my daughter."
Mia stopped sobbing and held on even tighter. Mark stood there in the driveway, soaked to the bone. He knew he could not go back to being the man he was before. He knew he could not stay with Linda. He could not live in a marriage that was built on a foundation of lies and secrets. He could not look at her every day and pretend that she had not betrayed him. But he also knew that he could not leave these children. He could not leave them to a mother who could not be honest. He could not leave them to David, a man who thought he could just walk in and take over after ten years of being a ghost.
Mark made a decision in that moment. It was a very big decision. It was a decision that would change their lives forever. It was a decision that would be the start of a whole new story. He was not going to let the lies win. He was not going to let David win. And he was not going to let the children suffer for the mistakes of the adults.
He looked at the house one more time. He looked at Linda behind the glass. Then he looked at David’s car in the dark. Mark did not feel like an extra in a movie anymore. He felt like a father who was ready to fight. He was going to do whatever it took to protect his kids. Even if they were not his by blood, they were his by love, and that was a bond that no lab test could ever break.
He turned away from his car. He did not pick up his suitcase. He carried Mia toward the front door. He walked with a new kind of strength. He was done running away. He was done being the victim of the secrets. He was going to take control of his life and the lives of the children he loved. He did not know exactly what the future would look like, but he knew he was not going to walk away from his heart.
As he reached the porch, he saw Leo and Sarah standing by the door. They looked just as scared as Mia. They were watching him, waiting to see if he was going to say goodbye. Mark looked at them and gave them a small, brave smile. He was going to save this family, but he was going to do it his way. The "Three Big Secrets" were out, but Mark had a secret of his own now. He had a plan, and it was a plan that no one saw coming.
