Episode 6: Three Big Secrets

The attic was very quiet and very dusty. The small yellow light bulb above them flickered just a little bit. It made the shadows on the wooden walls move back and forth. Linda stood in the doorway, and she looked very small. She was holding the old diary in her hands like it was the most important thing in the world. She walked slowly toward Mark. Every step she took made the floorboards under her feet creak. She held the book out toward him. It was a peace offering. A peace offering is something you give to someone when you want to stop a fight or show that you are sorry.

"You deserve to know everything," Linda whispered. Her voice was so quiet that Mark could barely hear her. Her eyes were still red from all the crying she had done.

Mark did not wait for her to hand it to him. He reached out and snatched the book from her hands. He was very angry, and his movements were quick and sharp. He wanted the truth, and he wanted it right now. He sat back down on the wooden crate and opened the diary. The pages were yellow with age, and they smelled like old paper and dried flowers. The handwriting inside was Linda’s. It was neat and pretty, but the words were about to break Mark’s heart even more.

Mark began to read from the very beginning. The first pages were from many years ago. They were from the time when they were first married. Linda wrote about how much she loved Mark. But she also wrote about a very big fear. She was very afraid of being alone. She wrote that a house without children felt like a house without a soul. She had a desperate desire to be a mother. She wanted it more than anything else in the whole world.

As Mark turned the pages, he saw how the lies started. Linda wrote about the day the doctor told her that Mark could not have babies. She wrote that she felt like the world was ending. But then, she wrote something that made Mark feel sick to his stomach. She wrote that she decided to make a sacrifice. She thought that if she cheated on Mark to get pregnant, she was doing it for their happiness. She actually convinced herself that her big lie was a form of love.

In her diary, Linda wrote that she wanted to give Mark a purpose. She thought that by giving him children to love and a family to care for, she was making him the happiest man alive. She really believed that she was being a hero. She thought she was taking a big secret upon herself so that Mark could have the life he always wanted. Mark could not believe what he was reading. How could someone think that a lie that big was a gift?

As he turned more pages, the writing became darker and more messy. It looked like Linda was very upset when she wrote those parts. She started to write about the guilt. Guilt is the bad feeling you get when you know you have done something very wrong. She wrote about how hard it was to look at Mark every single day. She watched him play with Leo, Sarah, and Mia. She saw how much he loved them. She saw how he worked late just to buy them the things they needed. And every time she saw his devotion, she felt a sharp pain in her heart because she knew those children were not his blood.

But then, Mark found the most shocking part of all. The diary began to mention David. David was the biological father of the children. David was the man with the real blood connection. Linda wrote that David was not a secret that stayed in the past. No, David was someone who had been there the whole time.

She wrote that David had started to make demands. He did not want to stay in the shadows anymore. He wanted to be part of their lives. He wanted to see the children grow up. He had been calling her and sending her messages for a long time. Mark realized a terrifying truth. His entire marriage of ten years had not just been about him and Linda. It had been a three-way relationship. David had been there like a ghost, watching them and waiting for his turn. Mark had signed up for a marriage with one woman, but he had actually been living in a house with a secret man the whole time.

The more Mark read, the more he felt like he was going to explode. He felt a huge wave of heat and anger wash over him. He felt the urge to burn the house down. He wanted to burn the kitchen where they ate. He wanted to burn the living room where they watched movies. He wanted to burn the attic and every single lie that was hidden inside it. He wanted to burn everything until there was nothing left but ashes. He felt like his whole life had been a trick, and he was the only one who didn't know the truth.

He looked up from the diary and stared at Linda. She was still standing there, watching him. He looked into her eyes, searching for something. He wanted to see if she was really sorry for what she had done. He wanted to see remorse. Remorse is when you feel a very deep sadness in your soul because you hurt someone you love.

But Mark did not see any remorse in Linda’s face. All he saw was fear. She was not crying because she was sorry for him. She was crying because she was afraid of being caught. She was afraid that her perfect life was over. She was afraid of what people would say. She looked like a person who had been caught stealing and was only sorry because they were going to jail.

Mark felt a coldness settle in his heart. He realized that the woman he had loved for ten years was a person he did not know at all. She was a stranger who lived in his house and wore his wife’s clothes. He felt like he was sitting in a room with a monster that looked like a human.

The silence in the attic was very heavy. Mark wanted to scream at her. He wanted to ask her how she could look at him every morning and smile. He wanted to ask her how she could let him believe he was a father. But before he could open his mouth to speak, a loud sound broke the silence.

It was the front doorbell.

The sound was very loud and very insistent. Someone was pushing the button over and over again. The sound of the bell echoed through the empty hallway and up into the attic. It felt like a warning.

Mark and Linda both froze. They looked at each other with wide eyes. Who could be at the door so early in the morning? Who would ring the bell that way?

Mark thought about the message he had seen on the phone. "We need to talk about our kids."

The bell rang again. It was a long, loud ring that did not stop. It felt like the person at the door was not going to go away. They were going to keep ringing until someone opened the door and let the truth inside. Mark felt his heart start to beat very fast. He looked at the diary in his hand, and then he looked toward the stairs. The secret was no longer just in a book or on a phone. The secret was now standing at his front door, and it was ringing the bell.

Who is at the door? Do you think it is David, the biological father?

If you were Mark, would you go down and open the door, or would you stay in the attic?

Do you think Linda is telling the truth in her diary, or is that another lie?

How can a person convince themselves that cheating is a "sacrifice" for love?

Should Mark try to save his marriage, or is it already over?

The tension is rising! A loud knock at the door can change everything. Who is standing on the other side? Is it the man from the photos? Is it the person who sent the scary message?
