Episode 3: Three Big Secrets

The drive home from the hospital was not like any other drive the Harrison family had ever taken. Usually, the car was a place of music, jokes, and loud talking. But today, the car felt like it was made of heavy lead. It felt so heavy that Mark thought the wheels might sink right into the road. The silence inside the car was so thick that you could almost touch it. It was a scary kind of silence. It was the kind of silence that happens right before a big, loud storm starts to blow.

In the back seat, the three children were very quiet. Leo, Sarah, and little Mia were usually very noisy. They liked to play games and point at birds outside the window. But today, they did not say a word. They were very smart children, and they could feel that something was very wrong. They looked at the back of their father’s head. Mark’s neck was very stiff, and his hands were gripping the steering wheel so hard that his skin was white. They looked at their mother, Linda. She was staring out the side window, but she was not really looking at the trees or the houses. Her face was very pale, and she looked like she wanted to cry. The children felt the storm brewing between their parents, and it made them feel very small and very afraid.

When they finally pulled into the driveway of their beautiful house, Mark did not say his usual "We are home!" He just turned off the engine and sat there for a moment. The house, which used to look so warm and full of love, now looked like a cold, dark place. It did not feel like home anymore. It felt like a place where a big secret was about to be told.

"Kids," Mark said, and his voice was very low. "I want you all to go and play in the backyard. Stay outside until we come and get you. Go on now."

The children did not argue. They didn't even ask why. They jumped out of the car and ran toward the grass in the back of the house. They wanted to get away from the heavy feeling inside the car. Mark and Linda walked into the house together, but they did not walk close to each other. They walked like two strangers who just happened to be in the same place at the same time.

They went into the kitchen. This was the room where they had shared thousands of meals. It was the room where they had laughed and talked about their dreams. But now, it felt like a room where a battle was about to happen. Mark walked over to the wooden kitchen table. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the white paper from the hospital. His hand was still shaking. He threw the DNA report onto the table. It made a loud slapping sound that seemed to echo through the whole house.

"Explain this!" Mark roared. His voice was so loud that it felt like the plates in the cupboard might break. It was the loudest he had ever yelled in his life. He felt like a lion that had been hurt. He felt a big fire of anger burning in his chest, but under that fire, there was a huge ocean of sadness.

Linda did not look at the paper. She didn't need to. She already knew what it said. She looked at Mark for a second, and then her legs seemed to give out. She collapsed into a kitchen chair. She put her face in her hands and began to sob. It was not a quiet cry. It was a loud, jagged sound. It was the sound of someone whose heart was breaking into pieces. She sounded like she was gasping for air, like she was drowning in her own tears.

Mark stood there and watched her. He wanted to feel sorry for her, but the anger was too big. "Tell me the truth, Linda!" he shouted again. "Who are those children? Why did the doctor say they are not mine? I have loved them for ten years! I have been their father every single day! How could you do this to me?"

Between her gasps and her tears, the truth finally began to leak out. It felt like poison coming out of a bottle. Linda started to speak in a very small, shaky voice. She told Mark that a long time ago, at the very beginning of their marriage, she had gone to see a doctor. They had been trying to have a baby for a year, but nothing was happening. The doctor told her some very bad news. He told her that Mark was likely infertile. That means he could not have babies of his own.

Linda said she was terrified when she heard that news. She loved Mark very much, and she did not want him to feel sad or like he was not a "real man." But more than that, she wanted a family so badly. She had dreamed of being a mother since she was a little girl. She wanted to hear the sound of little feet in the house. She wanted to hold a baby in her arms. She was so afraid of a life without children that she made a very bad choice.

Instead of telling Mark the truth about what the doctor said, she decided to keep it a secret. She panicked. She thought that if she told him, he would be heartbroken, and they would never have the family she wanted. So, she did something very, very wrong. She sought out another man. She wanted that man to give her the babies that she thought Mark could never give her.

Mark listened to her words, and he felt like he was being hit by a heavy hammer over and over again. Every word she said was like a new cut on his heart.

"You cheated on me?" Mark whispered. The anger was still there, but now his voice was full of pure pain.

Linda nodded her head while she cried. She confessed that she had cheated on him not just once, but multiple times over the years. She did it to make sure she had the children she craved so much. First came Leo. Then Sarah. And finally little Mia. Each time, she had let Mark believe that he was the father. She had watched him hold the babies in the hospital. She had watched him teach Leo how to ride a bike. She had watched him tuck the girls into bed. All that time, she knew the truth, but she never said a word.

"You built our entire life on a foundation of lies," Mark said. He looked around the kitchen. He looked at the pictures on the wall of their family vacations. He looked at the heights of the children marked on the doorframe. All of it was a lie. Their ten years of marriage was not a beautiful story. It was a fake story.

Mark looked at Linda, the woman he had loved more than anyone else in the world. He realized that he did not know her at all. The woman he loved was kind and honest. The woman sitting in front of him was a stranger who had lied to him every single day for a decade. He felt like he was looking at a monster wearing his wife’s face.

The pain in his heart was too much to bear. He felt like he couldn't stay in that house for one more second. He needed to get away. He needed to find some air because the house felt like it was filling up with that poison she had spoken. He turned his back on her. He didn't want to hear her cry anymore. Her tears didn't feel real to him. He felt like everything about her was a trick.

He walked toward the back door of the kitchen. He wanted to go out and just keep walking until he couldn't walk anymore. He reached out his hand and grabbed the cold metal handle of the door. He was ready to leave his life behind. He was ready to walk away from the lies and the secrets.

But just as he started to turn the handle, something happened.

A very loud and terrifying crash came from the backyard.

It sounded like metal hitting metal and glass breaking into a thousand pieces. It was so loud that the whole house seemed to shake. Mark stopped. His heart jumped into his throat. He remembered that the children were out there. Leo, Sarah, and Mia were in the backyard.

Mark forgot about his anger for a second. He forgot about the DNA paper and the lies. He only thought about the children. Even if they weren't his by blood, they were the children he had raised. They were the children he loved.

He threw the door open and looked out into the yard, his eyes wide with fear. The suspense was so thick you could feel it in the air. What had happened? Were the children okay? Mark stood at the door, his heart breaking, and his mind racing as he looked into the garden.

What do you think happened?

What do you think made that loud crash in the backyard?
