Episode 6: Tribe Rules (2)
Kofi stood in the middle of the Whispering Woods. The trees were moving their long branches. They looked like giant fingers trying to catch him. Tiya was standing very still. Her skin was already turning into brown bark. She was starting to look like a tree. She did not remember who Kofi was. She did not remember the blue flower. She did not even remember her own name. The trees were whispering very loudly now. They were telling her to sleep. They were telling her that it was time to join the forest. Kofi was very scared. He felt the trees trying to steal his thoughts too. He had to do something right now or they would both be lost forever.
Kofi looked at the Blue Memory Flower in his hand. The light was soft and pretty. He remembered what the stone snake had done. The snake had stopped being mean when Kofi showed he was not afraid. Kofi held the flower up high. He did not run away. He did not shout at the trees. Instead, he started to talk about the things he loved. He talked about the bright sun on the hills. He talked about playing with his friends. He talked about the first time he met Tiya at the ruins. He spoke from his heart. The light of the flower grew brighter and brighter with every word. It was like a small star in the middle of the gray fog.
The bright blue light touched Tiya. It touched the bark on her arms. It touched the roots at her feet. The magic of the trees did not like the light of the flower. The whispers turned into small cries of pain. The branches pulled back. The fog started to melt away like ice in the sun. Slowly, Tiya’s skin turned back to being soft. The bark disappeared. Her eyes became clear again. She blinked and looked at Kofi. She remembered everything. She grabbed his hand and they ran. They did not stop until they reached the edge of the woods. They were finally safe from the trees.
Ahead of them was the Rain Tribe village. It was a very beautiful place. It was built near a very big river. There were many small canals of water running between the houses. The houses were made of blue stone and wood. They had roofs made of big, green leaves. The air felt cool and wet. It was very different from the dry hills of the Sun Tribe. But the village was not peaceful today. There were soldiers everywhere. They were carrying blue shields and long spears. They were getting ready for the big battle. Kofi and Tiya had to be very careful. They did not want to be caught by the guards again.
Tiya knew a secret way into the village. She led Kofi down to the river. They climbed into a small wooden boat. They stayed very low so no one could see them. They floated down a small canal that went right under the palace walls. The palace of the Rain King was magnificent. It was built right over a waterfall. The sound of the falling water was like music. They found a small door near the water. Tiya used a special key she had hidden in her shoe. The door opened with a small click. They were inside the palace. It was time to find the King.
They walked through long hallways made of blue marble. The walls were decorated with paintings of the ocean and the stars. They had to hide behind big statues when guards walked past. Finally, they reached the Great Hall of the Rain Tribe. The room was full of light from the moon. At the end of the hall, the Rain King was sitting on his throne. He was a tall man with long, silver hair. He wore a cloak that looked like it was made of blue water. He looked very strong, but his face was very sad and very cold. He was looking at a map of the war.
Tiya took a deep breath. She stepped out into the light. "Father!" she called out. Her voice echoed in the big room. The Rain King looked up. He was very surprised to see his daughter. He stood up from his throne. His guards moved forward with their spears, but he told them to stop. "Tiya? How are you here?" the King asked. He looked at Kofi and his eyes became angry. "Why is the son of the Sun King with you? Did he capture you?" The King reached for his sword. He thought Kofi was a danger. He did not know that Kofi was a friend.
"No, Father! He saved me!" Tiya shouted. She ran toward her father. She held out the Blue Memory Flower. The light of the flower filled the room. The King stopped and looked at the glowing blue light. He had never seen anything like it. "We found the truth, Father," Tiya said. "The war is based on a lie. The tribes were never supposed to be enemies. A mean man from a long time ago told lies to make us fight. He wanted to steal the throne for himself. You have to see the truth. You have to remember."
The Rain King did not believe her at first. He had spent his whole life thinking the Sun Tribe was bad. He thought the flower was just a trick of magic. "Put that away, Tiya," the King said. His voice was like a cold wind. "The Sun Tribe is at our gates. They want to destroy us. There is no time for stories. I must lead my army to fight." He turned away from her. He did not want to listen. He wanted to stay angry because it was easier than being peaceful. The Spirit of Hate was very close, and it was making his heart feel like stone.
Tiya did not give up. she walked closer to her father. She touched his hand with the Blue Memory Flower. As soon as the flower touched his skin, the magic began. The King froze. His eyes went wide. He was seeing things that were not in the room. The flower was showing him the memories of his family from a long, long time ago. It was like he was watching a story in his mind. He saw the two brothers who started the tribes. He saw them laughing and eating together. He saw them building the first house. He saw that they were very happy.
Then the King saw the wicked advisor. He saw the mean man whispering bad things to the brothers. He saw the advisor telling one brother that the other brother was stealing his food. He saw the advisor telling the other brother that his blood was cursed. The King saw how the lies grew like weeds in a garden. He saw the brothers start to fight. He saw the tears they cried when they were forced to live apart. The King realized that his whole life had been lived in a lie. He realized that the people he hated were actually his brothers and sisters.
The vision ended, and the King fell back onto his throne. He was shaking. His cold eyes were now soft and wet. He looked at Kofi, and for the first time, he did not see an enemy. He saw a brave boy who was trying to help. He looked at Tiya and he felt a great love for her. He realized how much pain the war had caused. He thought about all the soldiers who had died over the years. He felt a very deep sadness in his heart. It was a sadness that had been hidden for a hundred years. The King of the Rain Tribe did something no one expected.
A single tear began to grow in the corner of the King's eye. It rolled down his cheek. It was a tear of true regret. He was sorry for the hate. He was sorry for the fighting. This was the tear that the riddle in the cave had talked about. The "Sun" had not given a tear yet, but the "Rain" was now feeling the truth. The room was very quiet. Even the guards were still. They could feel the change in the air. It felt like the heavy clouds were finally starting to move away. It felt like the peace might actually be coming back to the world.
But the peace did not last long. Suddenly, the room became very dark. The torches on the walls went out one by one. A cold, black smoke started to rise from the floor. It was the Spirit of Hate. It had followed them all the way from the ruins. The spirit was very angry. It did not want the King to feel sorry. It wanted the war to continue. It needed the anger of the tribes to stay alive. The giant shadow with the red eyes appeared behind the throne. It was bigger and scarier than ever before. Its red eyes were glowing with a mean light.
"No!" the Spirit of Hate hissed. Its voice sounded like dry leaves scraping on a grave. "I will not let you break the curse! The hate belongs to me! The blood belongs to me!" The spirit reached out its smoky hands toward the Rain King. The King tried to stand up, but he could not move. The spirit was too strong. The air in the room became so cold that the water in the canals began to turn into ice. The windows of the palace started to crack. Kofi and Tiya tried to run to the King, but the wind from the spirit pushed them back.
The spirit touched the King's face. The tear that was on the King's cheek suddenly stopped moving. It did not fall to the floor. Instead, it turned into a tiny piece of ice. Then, the ice started to spread. It moved across the King's eyes. It moved down his neck. It moved over his blue cloak. In just a few seconds, the Rain King was no longer a man. He was a frozen statue made of solid ice. He sat on his throne, frozen in time. He looked like a beautiful but sad carving. He could not speak. He could not move. He was trapped in the cold.
Tiya screamed. She ran to her father and touched the ice. It was so cold that it hurt her fingers. "Father! No! Wake up!" she cried. She tried to use the blue flower to help him, but the flower's light was becoming dim. The Spirit of Hate laughed. The sound was horrible. It made the whole palace shake. The spirit looked at Kofi. Its red eyes were full of mean joy. It had stopped the Rain King, and now it had a new plan. It wanted to finish what it started. It wanted to make sure the truth was buried forever.
"The Rain is frozen," the spirit said. "His heart is quiet now. He cannot stop the war. The soldiers outside are still angry. They do not know what has happened here. They will fight until everyone is gone." The spirit moved closer to Kofi. Kofi held his ground, but he was very afraid. He was just a boy, and the spirit was a monster. "Your father is next," the spirit whispered. "The Sun King is waiting for the battle. I will go to him now. I will turn his pride into a prison of ice just like this. And then, there will be no one left to remember the truth."
The spirit began to fade away into the darkness. It was heading toward the Sun Tribe village. It was going to find Kofi’s father. Kofi knew that his father was even more angry than the Rain King. If the spirit got to him, the Sun King would be frozen too. Then the two tribes would have no leaders. They would just keep fighting until there was nothing left of the world. Kofi looked at the frozen Rain King. He looked at Tiya, who was crying on the floor. He knew he had to move fast. He had to get back to his own home before the spirit arrived.
The suspense was very high. The palace felt like a tomb. Outside, the sounds of the war were getting louder. The soldiers were shouting. The drums were beating. The Rain King was a statue of ice, and the Sun King was in great danger. Kofi had to find a way to save his father and stop the spirit. But he was far from home, and the enemy was already on its way. The blue flower was almost dark. The mystery was getting more dangerous with every minute. The fate of everyone depended on a brave boy and a frozen secret.
