Episode 7: Tribe Rules (2)

The Great Hall of the Rain Palace was very cold. It felt like the middle of a winter night even though it was day. The Rain King was still a statue of blue ice. He sat on his throne with a sad look on his face. He could not move his arms. He could not speak to his daughter. He could not tell the guards to stop the war. Kofi and Tiya stood in front of the frozen King. They felt very small. The Spirit of Hate had gone to find the Sun King. They knew they did not have much time left. If the Spirit touched the Sun King, both tribes would lose their leaders. The world would fall into darkness forever.

Tiya touched the ice on her father's hand. It was so cold it made her fingers turn white. She began to cry, but her tears did not turn to ice. Her tears were warm because she had love in her heart. "We have to save them, Kofi," she said. Her voice was very quiet. "We have to show your father what happened here. If he sees my father like this, maybe he will understand the danger. Maybe he will see that the Spirit of Hate is our real enemy. But how can we move a giant statue of ice? It is too heavy for us to carry."

Kofi looked around the palace. He looked at the tall walls and the big windows. He saw a room near the back of the hall. It was a room where the Rain Tribe kept their old treasures. He ran inside and found something wonderful. It was a magic sled. The sled was made of silver wood that never broke. It had no wheels. It had smooth runners that looked like they were made of polished bone. The sled was designed to slide over water, grass, and even air. It was a gift from the first King to the Rain Tribe. Kofi called Tiya to help him.

Together, they pushed the magic sled next to the throne. They were very careful. They did not want to break the frozen King. They used long ropes made of silk to tie the statue to the sled. It was very hard work. They had to pull and push with all their strength. Their muscles hurt and their breath came in short gasps. Finally, the Rain King was safe on the sled. The sled began to glow with a soft blue light. It felt light as a feather now. The magic was working. They could move the King to the border of the two lands.

They pushed the sled out of the palace. The village was very quiet. Most of the soldiers had already gone to the border to fight. The few people who were left were hiding in their homes. They were afraid of the cold wind. Kofi and Tiya moved fast. They ran through the streets of the Rain Village. The sled followed them like it was floating on a cloud. They went past the blue houses and the small canals. They reached the edge of the woods. The path to the border was long and full of rocks, but the sled moved over everything very easily.

The air was getting colder every minute. The sky was not blue anymore. It was a dark, scary gray. The Spirit of Hate was moving through the world, and it was taking all the warmth away. The trees were covered in frost. The grass was crunchy under their feet. Kofi looked at Tiya. She looked very tired, but she did not stop. She wanted to save her father. Kofi wanted to save his father too. They were two children from different tribes, but they were working like a team. They were showing that the old rules were wrong.

After a long time, they reached the border. The border was a big stone bridge that went over a deep canyon. On one side of the bridge was the Land of Rain. On the other side was the Land of Sun. This was the place where the two armies were waiting to fight. Kofi could see the golden armor of the Sun Tribe soldiers. He could see the blue shields of the Rain Tribe soldiers. They were all standing in lines with their spears ready. The air was full of the sound of drums. It felt like a storm was about to break.

Kofi and Tiya stopped the sled in the middle of the bridge. They were right between the two armies. The soldiers on both sides were very surprised. They saw two children with a giant statue of ice. They did not know what was happening. Some of the soldiers lowered their weapons to look. Kofi knew he had to act fast. He found a messenger bird in a cage near a guard post. He wrote a small note on a piece of paper. The note said: "Father, the war can end today. Meet me on the bridge. I have the truth." He tied the note to the bird's leg and let it fly toward the Sun Tribe camp.

They waited on the bridge. The wind was blowing very hard now. It made a whistling sound through the canyon. Tiya stood next to her frozen father. She held his icy hand to keep him company. Kofi stood at the front of the sled. He was looking at the golden tents of the Sun Tribe. He was waiting for his father, the Sun King. He hoped his father would come with peace in his heart. He hoped the scroll and the frozen Rain King would be enough to stop the fighting. But he felt a strange shivering in his bones. Something was wrong.

Far away, the Sun King received the message. He was sitting in his big tent. He was wearing his heavy gold armor. His face was very red and he looked very angry. The Spirit of Hate was standing right behind him, though no one else could see it. The Spirit was whispering into the King's ear. It was telling him that Kofi had been tricked. It was telling him that the Rain Tribe was using his son to get him out in the open. The Spirit wanted the King to believe that the message was a trap.

The Sun King stood up. He did not feel love for his son at that moment. He only felt the fire of anger. He reached into a hidden box and pulled out a small dagger. The blade was very sharp and it was covered in a green liquid. This was a poisoned dagger. One small scratch from this blade could make a person sleep for a hundred years. The King hid the dagger in his sleeve. He told his guards to stay back. He wanted to meet his son alone. He thought he was being very smart. He thought he was going to end the threat of the Rain Tribe forever.

The Sun King walked out of his camp. He walked toward the bridge. His steps were heavy. Every time his golden boots hit the ground, it made a loud thud. The Sun Tribe soldiers cheered for him, but he did not smile. He only looked at the bridge. He saw Kofi. He saw the girl from the Rain Tribe. And he saw the statue of the Rain King. The Spirit of Hate followed him like a long, dark shadow. It was laughing silently. It knew that the King was carrying the poison. It knew that the war was about to get much worse.

Kofi saw his father coming. He felt a little bit of hope. "Father! You came!" he shouted. He ran a few steps toward the King. But the Sun King did not open his arms for a hug. He kept his hands hidden. His eyes were cold and hard like stones. He did not look like the kind father Kofi remembered. He looked like a stranger. He looked like a man who was ready to fight. Kofi stopped running. He felt a cold fear in his stomach. He realized that his father was not there to listen.

The Sun King reached the middle of the bridge. He stood in front of the sled. He looked at the frozen Rain King. He thought the statue was a magic trick. He thought the Rain Tribe had made a fake King out of ice to scare him. He did not believe that the Spirit of Hate had done this. He thought it was a trap to make him lower his guard. "Where is the real King?" the Sun King barked. His voice was very mean. "Why have you brought this piece of ice to my border? Do you think I am a fool?"

Tiya stepped forward. She was very brave even though she was small. "It is not a trick, King of the Sun," she said. "This is my father. The Spirit of Hate turned him to ice because he found the truth. We found a scroll that says we are all brothers. Look at the ice! Look at the sadness in his eyes! This is what hate does to us. It turns our hearts to stone and our bodies to ice. Please, you must stop the war before the Spirit finds you too." She was shaking as she spoke, but she did not back away.

The Sun King looked at Tiya. He saw her blue clothes and her Rain Tribe marks. The Spirit of Hate whispered louder in his ear. It told him that the girl was a witch. It told him that she was the one who had put a spell on Kofi. The King's hand moved inside his sleeve. He gripped the handle of the poisoned dagger. He felt the anger boiling in his blood. He did not see a child. He saw an enemy that had stolen his son's mind. He wanted to destroy the ice statue and the girl who brought it.

"I will not listen to the lies of the Rain Tribe!" the Sun King shouted. He pulled the poisoned dagger out of his sleeve. The green liquid on the blade glowed with a sick light. The Sun Tribe soldiers on the hill gasped. They had never seen their King use a poisoned weapon before. Kofi's eyes went wide. "Father, no! What are you doing?" he cried. He tried to grab his father's arm, but the King was too strong. He pushed Kofi aside. Kofi fell onto the hard stone of the bridge.

The Sun King moved toward the frozen Rain King. He raised the dagger high in the air. He wanted to smash the ice statue into a thousand pieces. He thought that if he broke the statue, the magic of the Rain Tribe would be broken too. He did not know that he was about to kill his oldest friend. He did not know that he was doing exactly what the Spirit of Hate wanted. The Spirit stood behind him, its red eyes glowing with joy. It was almost time. The war would truly begin when the first drop of poison hit the ice.

Just as the Sun King started to bring the dagger down, something happened. Tiya did not run away. She did not hide behind the sled. She saw the sharp blade moving toward her father. She knew that her father could not move to protect himself. She knew that the ice was fragile. If the dagger hit the statue, it would shatter. Her father would be gone forever. Without thinking about her own safety, Tiya jumped. She threw her small body right in front of the frozen Rain King. She put her arms out wide to cover as much of the ice as she could.

The Sun King was moving too fast to stop. He had already put all his strength into the strike. The poisoned dagger was moving through the air like a falling star. It was inches away from Tiya's chest. Kofi was on the ground, reaching out his hand and screaming "No!" The soldiers on both sides stopped breathing. The wind stopped blowing. Everything became very, very still. The only thing moving was the green, poisoned blade. It was pointed right at the heart of the little girl from the Rain Tribe.

The suspense was at its highest point. The bridge felt like it was hanging over the edge of the world. The Sun King's face showed a sudden flash of horror as he realized he was about to hit a child. But it was too late to pull back the blow. The Spirit of Hate gave one last loud laugh that echoed through the canyon. The dagger moved closer and closer to Tiya. The green poison was just a hair's breadth away from her skin. The fate of the Sun Tribe, the Rain Tribe, and the two children hung in the balance of a single second.
