Episode 5: Tribe Rules (2)
The stone snake was huge. It was much bigger than any animal Kofi and Tiya had ever seen in the real world. Its body was made of gray rock that looked like it had been carved from the mountain itself. Its green eyes were glowing so brightly that they lit up the entire cave. The snake opened its mouth wide. The crystal fangs looked like sharp knives made of glass. It moved its head back and forth, getting ready to bite the two children. The sound of its stone scales rubbing against the floor was like the sound of heavy rocks being dragged. It was a very scary moment.
Kofi looked at Tiya. Her face was very pale. She was shaking with fear. Kofi felt his own heart beating very fast inside his chest. It felt like a small bird trying to fly away. He wanted to turn around and run as fast as he could. He wanted to hide in a dark corner. But then he remembered what they had learned about the Spirit of Hate. He remembered that the spirit grew stronger when people were afraid or angry. He realized that the stone snake might be the same way. Maybe the snake was not just a monster. Maybe it was a mirror that showed them their own feelings.
"Tiya, look at me," Kofi whispered. His voice was soft, but it was steady. Tiya turned her eyes toward him. She was still very scared. "We cannot run," Kofi said. "If we run, it will chase us. If we are afraid, it will stay angry. We have to show the snake that we are not its enemies. We have to show that we have peace in our hearts." Kofi took a deep breath. He let go of his fear. He imagined a warm sun shining inside him. He stood up straight. He did not hold a weapon. He did not raise his hands to fight. He just stood there.
Tiya saw what Kofi was doing. She was very smart, and she understood. She took a deep breath too. She thought about the cool, calm rain of her village. She thought about the friendship she had with Kofi. Slowly, she stopped shaking. She stood next to Kofi. They both looked directly into the glowing green eyes of the stone snake. They did not look away. They did not blink. They showed the snake that they were brave and that they were not there to cause any trouble. They wanted the snake to know they were friends of the first King.
The giant snake paused. It had its head pulled back, ready to strike. But then it stopped moving. It tilted its head to the side, looking at the two small children. It seemed confused. It had been used to people screaming and running away. It had been used to people trying to hit it with swords or spears. But these children were just standing there with calm faces. The green light in the snake's eyes began to change. It became softer and more gentle. It was no longer a scary light. It was a beautiful, peaceful green, like the leaves of a tree in the springtime.
The snake lowered its head. It moved slowly toward Kofi. Kofi did not move. The snake reached out and touched Kofi’s shoulder with its cold, stone nose. It felt like a smooth river rock. Then it moved over to Tiya and did the same thing. The snake made a soft humming sound. It was a sound that made the ground vibrate gently. It was not a growl or a hiss. It was a sound of welcome. The guardian of the cave had accepted them. It knew that they were the ones who could bring the tribes back together. The snake moved its huge body out of the way, clearing the path to the statues.
As the snake moved, something amazing happened. A small part of the floor near the statues began to open up. A tiny stone pedestal rose from the ground. On top of the pedestal sat a very beautiful flower. It was not a real flower made of petals and stems. It was a flower made of glowing blue light. It looked like it was made of magic. The blue light was so bright that it made the cave look like it was under the ocean. This was the Blue Memory Flower. It was a gift from the ancient times.
"The scroll said the truth was hidden," Tiya said as she reached out to the flower. "This flower has the power to show people what they have forgotten. It can show them their true memories. If we show this to the Kings, they will remember that they were once brothers. They will see that the hate was just a lie." Tiya carefully picked up the flower. It felt warm in her hand. The light did not burn her. It felt like holding a small, happy star. They knew they had to be very careful with it. It was the only way to stop the war.
They left the cave and climbed back up the hidden path. They could still hear the distant sound of the war. The Sun Tribe and the Rain Tribe were still fighting near the big walls. They decided to go to the Rain Tribe village first. Tiya knew the secret paths into her own home. She thought she could get them inside so they could talk to her father, the Rain King. But to get to the Rain Tribe, they had to go through a very strange place. It was a part of the forest known as the Whispering Woods.
The Whispering Woods was a place where the trees were very old and very tall. The branches were all tangled together like long, wooden arms. The air in the woods was thick and gray. There was always a heavy fog that moved between the tree trunks. The people in the villages stayed away from these woods. They said the trees were alive and that they did not like strangers. They said the woods were a puzzle that was designed to make people get lost. If you went into the Whispering Woods, you might never come out again.
As soon as Kofi and Tiya stepped into the woods, the air became very quiet. They could no longer hear the sound of the waterfall. They could no longer hear the sound of the war. All they could hear was the soft sound of their own footsteps on the damp leaves. But then, a new sound began. It was a very low whisper. It sounded like a thousand people talking at the same time, but they were all talking very quietly. The sound seemed to come from the trees themselves. The leaves were rustling even though there was no wind.
"Don't listen to them," Kofi said. He stayed close to Tiya. "The trees are trying to trick us. They want us to turn back. They want us to forget our mission." But the whispers were very hard to ignore. The voices sounded like people they knew. Kofi thought he heard his father's voice calling him back to the palace. He thought he heard his friends playing in the sun. The voices were sweet and kind. They were telling him that he was tired and that he should just lie down and go to sleep. They were telling him that the war was not his problem.
Tiya was having a harder time. She was very sensitive to the world around her. She could feel the magic of the woods pressing against her mind. The whispers were louder for her. They were telling her that she was not a member of the Rain Tribe. They were telling her that she had no home. They were asking her who she was. "Kofi, I feel strange," Tiya said. Her voice sounded far away. She stopped walking and looked at a large oak tree. The tree had knots in its bark that looked like a sad face.
Kofi looked at her. He saw that her eyes were becoming cloudy. It looked like she was dreaming while she was awake. "Tiya, we have to keep moving!" Kofi said. He took her hand and tried to pull her forward. But Tiya stayed still. She looked down at her feet. She seemed to be forgetting where they were. She looked at the glowing blue flower in her hand. She did not seem to remember what it was for. She looked at it like it was just a strange rock she had found on the ground.
"Who are you?" Tiya asked. She looked at Kofi, but she did not recognize him. She did not remember the white house. She did not remember the stone snake or the waterfall. The Whispering Woods were stealing her memories. The trees were hungry for the stories of people's lives. Every step they took into the deep forest, the trees took a little bit of their minds. Tiya was losing everything that made her who she was. She was becoming a blank slate.
"I am Kofi! We are friends!" Kofi shouted. He was getting very worried. He tried to shake her shoulders, but Tiya was like a statue. She was staring at the gray fog. The whispers were getting louder now. They were laughing. They were happy that they were winning. The trees were moving their branches closer to Tiya. It looked like they wanted to wrap her in their wooden arms. The ground around Tiya's feet began to change. The roots of the trees were growing over her shoes.
Kofi saw that Tiya's skin was starting to look different. It was becoming rough and brown. It was starting to look like the bark of a tree. The magic of the Whispering Woods was very powerful. If a person stayed in the woods too long and forgot who they were, they would turn into a tree. That is why the woods were so thick. Every tree in the forest used to be a person who got lost. Kofi realized that if he did not do something fast, Tiya would be gone forever. She would be just another tree with a sad face in the bark.
"Tiya, listen to me! Remember the rain! Remember the river!" Kofi cried out. He tried to tell her stories about her home. He tried to remind her of the smart things she had said. But Tiya did not move. The roots were now up to her ankles. She was starting to grow tall and stiff. Her fingers were beginning to look like small twigs. The blue flower was slipping from her hand. If it fell into the mud, it might lose its light. Everything they had worked for was about to disappear in the gray fog of the woods.
Kofi felt the whispers starting to affect him too. He was starting to forget the name of his tribe. He was starting to forget why he was holding Tiya's hand. He felt a great weight on his shoulders. He wanted to give up. He wanted to let the trees take him too. It would be so easy to just stop and let the memories go. But then he looked at Tiya's face. He saw a tiny tear in the corner of her eye. Even though she was turning into a tree, a small part of her was still there. She was still his friend.
Kofi knew he had to save her mind. He had to find a way to break the spell of the Whispering Woods. But how do you fight a forest? How do you stop a tree from whispering? He looked at the glowing blue flower. Maybe the flower could help. But he did not know how to use it. He was just a boy, and the woods were a giant, ancient power. The roots were moving higher up Tiya's legs. The bark was moving up her arms. The suspense was growing with every second. Kofi was all alone in the dark forest, and his best friend was turning into wood right before his eyes.
