The First Lady, Episode Five
For several minutes, Leke continued to wait for
the First Lady to respond to his comments, but
she did not do so on time. She continued to look
at Leke as if he was the type of human being
she has never seen before. He looked at Leke
from his head to the toes and then looked at
him again from his toes to the head. It was
almost like Leke was a stranger who she has
never seen before. She was wondering what
gave him the guts to reject her mouthwatering
offers. Why would he humiliate her by saying no
to her? Where did he find the courage to say no
to a job that would give him N6 million
monthly? Where did he find the guts to say he
would rather become poor than sell his personal
values for a pot of porridge. The First Lady
never expected that Leke would be able to say
no to her. She thought the whole thing would be
easy because Leke was a poor man desperate
to make a change in his family. The silence in
the room grew bigger, until the First Lady finally
decided to speak.
"I have always known you to be a man of integrity. I almost forgot that you are a good man. The only thing that made me not to marry you was because you did not have money when I was ready for marriage. You ticked every other box in terms of what I was looking for in a man to call my husband. One of the reasons I wanted to marry was your honesty. I discovered you are a man of principles and values. I discovered you would never cheat on me if we were to get married." The First Lady said. She was talking calmly. Leke was tired of standing, so he took one stool beside the bed and sat down to listen to his ex.
"I was happy with you as my boyfriend back then. The only problem was that you never gave me money. You could not buy me any of the gifts my fellow ladies were flaunting. You never bought me any gifts for the years we dated. When I needed a phone, you could not afford it. Every time I asked you for money, you will say you didn't have it. And it was true, you didn't have money. The good heart you have was spoiled by your empty pockets." The First Lady's voice was growing more intense. Leke listened attentively.
"I'm in a position to help you and that was why I called you. It is true that I still love you and I still cherish the memories we shared many years ago when we were dating, but my honest desire is to make you rich. I want you to have money to take proper care of your wife and son. I want you to stop having empty pockets. That was why I called you to come to the state capital." The First lady said.
"Are you sure you are telling the truth?" Leke asked.
"Well, I also wanted something else in return. I wanted us to go back to those days we used to have a lot of fun in the bedroom as couples. The truth is that I have never being happy since I married my husband. I got married to him because of his money, not because I loved him or that he loved me. I just wanted to do something to help my poor family. Getting married to my husband helped me lift my parents and siblings out of poverty. But since I married him, happiness has eluded me. I was hoping that when you come here and stay close to me every day, I would become happy again. I was hoping you would love me the way you used to love me when we were dating. In return, I was prepared to give you everything to make you rich." The first lady's voice was now becoming low and emotional.
"So if you wanted to help me, why are you demanding those things from me? Why are you asking me to do bedroom job for you? You forgot that I'm married? What you asked me to do would spoil my married and I don't want that to happen. If you want to help someone, just go ahead and help that person without demanding anything in return. I mean, you could help me with anything I want. You could help me find my feet in life and you will not lose anything. Why are you making it so difficult for me to accept your help?" Leke asked with a firm voice.
"I'm not making it difficult, I just want to get some level of happiness. This is me telling you that my love for you is still there and that I married my husband all because of money not for love. I never loved him and I still don't love him. I still find it difficult to look at his face. He is not handsome at all. Sometimes, I sit and imagine why I ended up with someone like him. He is not the type of man I would fall for on a normal day. But I was attracted to him because he has money. Apart from that, there is nothing else. All I want from you is for you to help me regain my happiness. I didn't say you should leave your wife. And I'm not leaving my husband either. I just want us to help each other." The First Lady said. Tears were now dropping from her eyes. She was remembering how Leke used to love her in the past, despite not having money. She paused for a while and continued to talk in tears.
"Please, help me. I'm a sad woman in my marriage. Help me let me help you. Let the right hand wash the left hand and let the left hand wash the right hand. That's all I'm asking for. Leke, please, accept me back as your girlfriend. Please, take me back. I will be the one to serve you now. I will be as humble as I was the time we were dating. If you want, I can even wash your clothes the way I used to do. I will cook for you and I will do everything a woman does for her man. I promise not to be bossy, I promise to be as humble as a young woman who is meeting her first love. You were my first love and ever since I abandoned you, I have never had joy. Please, take me back. Let's go back and love each other again. I'm begging you not to say no to me." The First Lady said. She was now crying like a child.
Leke kept calm as he processed her words, thinking of how to reply her.
