The First Lady, Episode Four
Leke started making plans on how to move his family away from the state capital. After many days of thinking, he had decided he was not going to do what the First Lady asked him to do. He thought the outcome would be detrimental to his family, so he was not going to yield to the First Lady's demands under any circumstances. Leke understands that his wife was just coming out of poverty, so it was normal for her to push him to make money even through illegal means. But he was prepared to face his wife's wrath instead of doing what was against his heart and personal values.
"My wife is pushing me to go and do what is clearly very wrong. It is against my personal values. It goes against my religious values. I dated the First Lady many years ago and I have moved on since we broke up. She is a married woman now and I'm also married. I see no reason why we should continue seeing each other. If she wants to help me for old times' sake, I'm okay with it, but if she is pushing me into doing those things I used to do to her when we were dating, I'm not going to do it. Even if it means losing this job, I will gladly go back to my tiny house. There is no gain in deceit." Leke said in his heart that morning when he was preparing to go to the First Lady's secret house at the GRA.
"It is better to be poor and live a dignified life than to make money through an illegal means. I cannot throw away my life and future just because I want to make N2 million monthly from the First Lady. She is my ex-girlfriend. We cannot come back and start dating again even with the approval of my wife. This is my life and I get to determine what happens in it. I cannot allow greed to blind my reasoning. I cannot do something wrong simply because I want to escape poverty." Leke continued talking to himself as he tied the lace of his shoe in readiness to go and see the first lady.
"When I get there, I will tell her clearly that I'm resigning from the job offer. I will issue her my resignation letter and then come back and take my family back to my small house. It is better for me to live in that small house and be happy with peace of mind than for me to stay here in the state capital and indulge in bad lifestyles." Leke said. He stepped out of the house when his wife and child were still sleeping. He did not tell them that he was going out.
Every morning when Leke wakes up, a driver is always around to pick him up and drive him around in a beautiful car. No doubt, he loves the fact that he has a car and a driver, but he did not like the price he has to pay for him to keep enjoying the wealth provided by the first lady, so he was prepared to break away from it. The driver took Leke to the secret house and he entered the room where the First Lady used to stay and wait for him. Surprisingly, she was already there that early morning.
"Did you pass the night here? I thought I was going to come here and wait for you, but here you are." Leke tells the First Lady who was happy to see him.
"I have missed you so much. Of course, I passed the night here. I was hoping you would come and meet me in the night but I did not see any sign of you. So, have you finished thinking about my proposal? I have decided to increase the salary to N6 million. If N2 million is too small for you, I will make it N6 million per month. I just want to help you. I have money to give to you. Any amount you want. Also, I will be the one directly responsible for your son's education. I will add his name to the state's scholarship program so that his school fees will be paid from now until he graduates from the university. I will send him abroad to study in the United States. I will also open a big supermarket for your wife. Look Leke, there is a lot to benefit if you stay here and make me happy. There is nothing else I want from you other than to give me bedroom happiness. That's all. Once you do this for me, you will have access to cash and everything money can buy." The First Lady said. She has made her offer more tempting than before but Leke had already made his decision.
"I have taken a decision and no matter how much money you offer me, I will not change my mind. I have decided not take the job. I'm resigning from the position. I have already written my resignation letter and I'm here to submit it to you. I cannot take the job. I'm so sorry for how this would make you feel. I don't mean to hurt you but what you are asking me to do is against my values and personal principles. I cannot honestly be entering your bedroom while still married to my wife. It is not a good thing to do and I feel like no matter how tempting this is, it would lead to something bad in the future." Leke said. The First Lady was Just silent.
"You could look around town, I'm sure there are many young men out there who would be willing to do this kind of job for you. They will readily accept your offer. Even if you offer then N100,000 per month, they will do it. But I cannot do the job because it does not sit well with my conscience as a man of integrity and honesty."
Leke said. He ended his speech and waited for the First Lady to reply him. The woman did not say a word for a long time. Leke did not know why she was keeping mute, but he had finished what he had to say and he was prepared to wait for her response right there in the bedroom.
