The First Lady Episode Three
Leke didn't know how to handle the temptation that came his way. He understands that his family needs money to survive and that not doing the job the First Lady asked him to do would mean he will not have money. He knows the pressure that comes with being poor. He understands how it feels when a man is unable to provide for his family. The past few days at the state capital habe been good. His family has had more money than they ever dreamt of. They had more food to eat than ever before. So, he is enjoying everything that comes with the job given to him by the First Lady.
The only problem is that he is not willing to do that kind of job. He understands the dangers of having an affair with another woman as a married man. Besides, she is the governor's wife. He could be in a lot of trouble.
"Once I start now, I will not be able to stop. I don't want to play this type of game with the first lady. I don't know why she tricked me to this place with the promise of a job only for her to start demanding something else from me.
This is not what we agreed. She told me I will be her personal assistant or special advisor." Leke was in the living room of his new house thinking about the situation at hand. He has been confused for many days, not knowing what to do.
The First Lady has informed him that they would be thrown out of the building at the end of the month if he failed to give her the food she wants to eat.
"Now, she is saying I will lose this house and the car given to me if I fail to give her what she wants. Life has been good these few days. I now have a house to call my own and I have a car to get me to anywhere unlike before that I used to trek. I have had more money in my pockets than ever before. Taking good care of my family is now as easy as ABC. If I decide to leave these things behind, life will become difficult again. I don't want to go back to those days when I could not feed my family. It was a terrible experience that made me weak." Leke said in his heart.
"But what the First Lady is asking me to do for her is not good. The price she is asking me to pay is too high and costly. What if someone catches us and tells the governor? What if she gets pregnant? What if my own wife finds out? I don't know why she is offering me this kind of Job when her husband is still alive. It's not a good idea." Leke said. He was drinking wine poured for him in a glass cup.
"My wife doesn't even know the whole story yet. She is yet to understand the kind of job the First Lady has given to me. She thinks it's a normal office work. She doesn't know that it is something that is capable of breaking our marriage. She just fixed her eyes on the money that would come from the job without thinking about the consequences." Leke said as he continued to sip his wine.
He decided that the best way to handle the problem was to open up fully to his wife. He decided to tell his wife everything the First Lady wants him to do in the bedroom.
"I have to give my wife the whole picture. I will give her detailed information about the demands by the First Lady so that she would be in the best position to take the right decision." Leke said as he called his wife who was cooking egusi soup in the kitchen. She was preparing assorted meals to be stocked in her fridge.
"My love, you called me. Is everything alright? You have been here alone for a while, what are you thinking about?" His wife asked. She took a glass cup and also poured wine for herself and sat beside her husband.
"There's something I want you to know about the job I got from the First Lady. You know, I did not tell you exactly what the woman wants me to be doing for her. I want to make sure you understand the job she wants me to do. I want you to be fully aware of the implications it have on our marriage." Leke said. He poured more wine for himself.
"Who told you don't know the job she wants you do? I know exactly what the woman wants from you. But the truth is that I don't care! So far as that job is bringing money, you can go ahead. So far as it can put food on our table, 'chikina'. I don't know why you are delaying. Go and meet her and beg her. Tell her you are sorry for refusing to do the job the other day. After begging her, you can start doing the job for her immediately. Look at the good things we have now. It's because of the job. I don't want us to lose anything." Leke's wife said.
"My love, you still don't understand. It is not a normal job that the first lady gave me. I mean, there's no office and I don't even have to do any real work for the government. She wants me to be servicing her engine in her bedroom. She complained to me that her husband is a busy politician who doesn't have time for her. She said she brought me here so I can be servicing her engine and that there's no real job to do. Can you imagine something like that? I feel offended by the offer. That's why I told her I will not be doing the job." Leke said with seriousness. His wife looked at him for a while before speaking.
"Someone wants to help you and your family and you are getting offended? Why were you offended? She asked you to do a simple thing in the bedroom and you are running helter skelter since that day. You think I didn't know what the woman wants? Give it to her. What is so difficult about it? Is it not the same thing you give to me for free? Go out there and make me proud. Look, my dear, I'm not ready to go back to poverty. I reject anything that will make me go back to suffering. Go and use your skills to make the First Lady happy. There's nothing wrong with it. She is not taking you away from me. She just wants to share and I'm ready to share. I fully approve." Leke's wife said.
"Are you drunk?" Leke asked.
"What do you mean drunk? My senses are fully intact and I know what I'm saying. Quote me anywhere. I said I approve that you should do whatever the first lady asks you to do. I will not be angry so far as N2 million enters our account monthly. Again, let me warn you, if you lose this job, you will not like what I will do. Deliver excellently and secure the bag. The woman is not going to cut off your cassava. Use it wisely!" His wife said without mincing words. She went back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
