The Supermarket Cashier, Episode Six

"I have started doing the work this morning and I found interesting discrepancies in one of the POS. I ran a check on it and it has a different name attached to it other than the name of the supermarket. The name is Msizi. Why is that so?" The new cashier asked Sizwe. Sizwe had rushed to work that morning despite waking up and not seeing Msizi who had practically disappeared into thin air. He has made efforts to reach her through phone but he was unsuccessful. He wondered where she went to and what got her so angry as to leave the house unceremoniously after he announced his resignation.

"Really? Msizi is my fiancé's name. What would her name be doing in the supermarket's POS machine?" Sizwe asked Masango.

"I don't know! Interestingly, the money that has gone into the account for the past few months is about N150 million. This shows that your fiancée has been receiving money from the sales made at the supermarket. This is shocking and I have informed the owner of the supermarket." Masango said with concern written all over his face.

"But why? You should have told me first. I'm the one handing over the documents to you and I think I have the right to be consulted first over such an important issue. Don't you think I can be implicated if such information leaks to the owner?" Sizwe said.

"Wait, are you saying you are not aware that your fiancée has been receiving money into her account directly from sales made at the supermarket? I mean, you are the one who went to the bank to collect these POS machines and you are the one who have been using them in the supermarket for the past several months. And you are insinuating that you don't know that something was wrong all these while? You must be kidding me." Massango said forcefully as if he has already made up his mind to nail Msizi with facts that are difficult to prove..

"Your fiancée never comes to the supermarket. So, there is no way it would be said that she came here to drop her personal POS machine on your counter. You obviously brought the POS machine from the house. The question now is how come you have been using it for several months without reporting to the owner of the supermarket or even making it known to anyone that something fraudulent was going on. You obviously knew about it and you chose to keep quiet because you were benefiting from the money your fiancée was stealing." Masango said. The things he was saying was hitting Msizi like pebbles of hard stone. He opened his mouth to speak and defend himself but he was unable say a word because the allegations were heavy and he did not know where to start from. He chose to keep calm and face the music.

"Well, don't bother to speak, because I have

already told the owner of the supermarket about

what you and your fiancée have been doing to

his money. The security agencies have been

contacted and fully briefed about your

fraudulent acts. You should better get ready to

face the dirty music. I can assure you, with the

available evidence, there is no escape route for

you my brother." Masango said as he ushered

Sizwe into the office of Sisilu. Sisilu is the owner

of the supermarket and he is a good man who

absolutely trusted Sizwe. He was highly

disappointed when the information about the

missing money was brought to his notice.

"I feel so bad that you could do this to me. Why? I trusted you so much. I gave you access to so much money and you decided to steal from me? Why did you steal from me through

your fiancé? If you needed money, you should have asked me for help. You stole as much as N150 million from the supermarket. Do you want to destroy the business? I did not know that you hated me so much." The supermarket owner said. His words were so painful as Sizwe listened to him. He felt like crying but he knew that crying would not solve his problem. The owner of the supermarket brought out the POS machine and showed to Sizwe who was still too shocked to talk.

"This is one of the POS machines you told me you went to collect from the bank a few months ago. I didn't know that you conspired with your fiancée to run me dry. You conspired with her to steal all my money so that I will become poor and wretched. Thank God for the new cashier who discovered your plans. So this was why you resigned right? You resigned because you and your fiancée have stolen enough money to take care of yourselves. You probably plan to move abroad and disappear with my N150 million. But thanks to God, you were caught. Now, you will face the music." Mr Sisilu said angrily. He was sitting in his office chair while the POS machine lay before him.

Sizwe took the POS machine and looked at it closely for the first time and he saw that there

was a slight difference in colour from the rest of

the ones he brought from the bank on the same

day. He also saw the account number and the

account name. There was no way he was going

to defend himself and say he did not know that

something bad was going on. That would be a

poor excuse and he would be seen as a terrible

liar. But the truth remains that he knew nothing

about the fraud. What made it more difficult to

track was that there was no other record of

sales at the supermarket. It was relatively a new

business and no proper record keeping was

established. At the end of every business day,

the cashier records cash at hand, but never

records what went into POS or what items were

sold. It was assumed that the money went

straight to the owner's account, so no need.

The owner just takes whatever money that

comes into his account as what was generated. Sizwe has been faithful too, because the supermarket had grown in leaps and bounds since he became the cashier. He was now shocked to hear that he was a party to theft. He wondered how it escaped his notice that there was a different POS planted by his fiancée. He blamed himself for the mistake. He should have been more careful and observant. He now knew where the money Msizi has been spending came from.

"Well, don't bother to explain anything to me. You will go to the police station and explain it to them." The supermarket owner said as some policemen were ushered into the office. Sizwe was immediately arrested.
