The Supermarket Cashier, Episode Seven

"Why did you do it?" Sizwe asked Msizi. He was locked up in the police cell and he has been there for two weeks now. The police was preparing to charge him to court. One evening, he was told that Msizi had come to see him.

"I have come to confess to the police. I don't

want you to pay for what you did not do." Msizi

said tearfully. She had been sad for several

days such that she refused to eat. She fell sick

and was rushed to the hospital for medical care.

When she got to the hospital, a scan performed

on her confirmed that she was expecting twins.

"I did it to help us. We were suffering so much to make end's meat. I did it for us to come out of poverty. I did not know that it would result to you going to jail. Please, forgive me." Msizi said as tears rolled down her cheeks. She knew that what she did cannot be defended. She knew it was morally wrong to steal.

"I did not mean to cause you any harm. As a matter of fact, I did it out of love. It is my love for you that made me go to that extent to secure our future.

I had no idea it would end this way." Msizi continued talking as Sizwe listened to him intently.

"Look, I don't want you to suffer for what you did not do. I want you to be out of this place today without any further delay. Look at you. You have emaciated. I will go and turn myself in so that I will pay for my sins. There is no need for an innocent person to suffer while the guilty person would walk freely in the streets." She told Sizwe who has yet to say much in response.

"So, you wanted to secure our future by stealing? How can you say you did not know stealing would land someone in jail? Are you a child? You are an adult for God's sake and you should know that stealing is a bad thing that is punishable by the laws of the land. Now, look at where I have landed. Look at me. I have never taken anything that does not belong to me. There is not a single way I can defend myself from this crime you committed. There are many evidences to nail me. You have ruined my life." Sizwe said with tears in his eyes.

"You were trying to save my life from poverty, but you have ended up sending me to jail. Of what use is the money that you stole if I cannot be free to enjoy it? You have ruined my life and I'm not sure I will come out of this situation alive." Sizwe said. He was still crying profusely.

"That is why I'm here to confess my sins to the police authorities. I want them to take me and let you go. I want them to lock me up and give you your freedom back. I'm prepared to take whatever punishment against me. I'm fully prepared to pay for my sins." Msizi said tearfully.

"You want to pay for your sins in this condition? You are pregnant for goodness' sake and there is no way I will allow you to go to jail with my baby." Sizwe said. He was so sad within himself. This was not the kind of life he asked for. He has always been careful not to put himself in a situation in which he cannot help himself. Now, it looks like he was caught in a cobweb of problems and there is not coming out.

"And you are saying they will set me free? How? All the properties were bought in my name and they have gone to our house to search and they were able to recover all the documents for the properties and car we bought. My name is in all the documents and they are using it as evidence against me. There is no coming out of this situation. Jail is sure for me." Sizwe said sadly.

"I will turn myself in and they will free you." Msizi said again, not knowing the implication of what she was saying.

"I can't allow you go to jail with my baby in your womb." Sizwe said.

"The babies are two. I went for a scan and I was told I'm pregnant for twins." Msizi said. The tears coming out from her eyes were plenty enough to fill a bucket.

"Now, you see why you can't go to jail? I cannot imagine the fact that I will not be around to train my children. God knows the number of years they are going to sentence me to. The good news you just gave me is not good but sad to my ears." Sizwe sald.

"The police had actually wanted to come and arrest you, but I told them I was the only one who planned and executed the stealing." Sizwe said. At that time, a police office came to call the two of them. They were taken to the DPO's office. Surprisingly, they saw Mr Sisilu, the supermarket owner sitting in the office. Sizwe wondered what was going to happen next.

"So this is the woman you conspired with to steal my money right?" The supermarket owner asked.

"I did it alone sir. I was the one who swapped the POS machine. My fiancée here knows nothing about it. He has never stolen from you and he is mad at me over what I did." Msizi said. Sizwe wanted to say something but Msizi was faster.

"I know, because I have known Sizwe to be a very honest man. Why could you do such a thing? It is a terrible crime." The supermarket owner said.

"Forgive me sir. I was greedy and I wanted to make money faster than normal. But I have learnt my lessons." Msizi said.

"Well, I'm here to withdraw the case. I don't want them to charge you to court. We are going to do out of court settlement. All the properties you used my money to buy will be returned to me. I have asked the police to set you free. I'm doing this for Sizwe who I know to be an honest man. This is the first time he is being involved in this kind of thing since I employed him. I don't want to destroy his life because of the mistake and greed of his girlfriend. And to you Msizi, I hope you have learned your lesson? You cannot get rich through shortcut. You have to work hard to become rich. It might take a long time, but with hard work, you will surely get there. Stealing can only land you in trouble. Make sure you never do this kind of thing again. "The supermarket owner said.

"I'm so grateful for this sir. I will never forget this favour." Sizwe said, falling of thr ground in jou and gratitude.

"I will forever be thankful to you sir. You don't know what you have done for me." Msizi said as she knelt down to thank Mr Sisilu.

In a few minutes, they signed a few papers and they were allowed to go home. They had to go and rent a one room apartment to start life all over again because they were not allowed into the house they bought.

TEF END.
