{
MIDNIGHT CALL }

“What?” Emma deadpanned.

Robert blinked his eyes, taking a step forward, and stopped right beside Emma.

“My number?” She asked, looking a little bit confused. “Why?”

“He is obviously into you. Didn’t you see the way he has been staring at you in there?” Ginny rolled her eyes.

“Shut up, Ginny. Must you always say stupid things, huh?” Emma snapped.

Ginny threw her hands in the air as if in surrender and walked away.

Emma cleared her throat and faced Stephen once again.

“What do you need my number for, Stephen?” She asked again.

Stephen hesitated for a few seconds, contemplating whether to say the word or not. She might turn him down, she might not. Well, there is only one way to know where he stands with her.

“I want to be your friend.” He said.

“Friend?” Robert scoffed. “Why do you want to be her friend? Is this your way to get closer to her, huh?”

“Rob, what are you saying?” Emma whispered, giving him the ‘Stop getting involved in my business’ look.

Robert simply ignored her but didn’t say anything afterward. He just kept looking to see what Emma was going to do.

“Why do you want to be my friend? I know it is a dumb question to_”

Robert cut her off. “How is that a dumb question? He wants to be your friend, there must be a reason why.” He huffed.

“Robert, can you stop getting involved in this conversation?” She gro-aned, frowning at him.

“I’m just being a friend here. A true friend.” He said.

“Friend indeed,” Stephen muttered, loud enough for Emma and Robert to hear.

“And what is that supposed to mean?” Robert scowled at him.

“You know what?” Emma snatched Stephen’s phone from his grasp and typed out her number. “That’s my number. We can talk over on the phone without getting interrupted.” She grimaced at her partner before walking away.

“Thank you!” Stephen said excitedly and quickly saved her number, a big grin on his face.

“You do realize that you fuc-k ed your housekeeper who stole from your father, right?”

Stephen frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“I know your type of person. All you care about is s-ex and nothing more.”

“That should be my line.”

“Excuse me?”

“Focus on the other bit-ch y girl.” He said, referring to Ginny. “She is more into you so leave Emma for me.”

“Don’t you dare call Emma by her name.” Robert snarled.

“I don’t think she will mind that. You should get going, they are waiting for you. See ya around. I hope not.” Stephen rolled his eyes and walked away.

Robert balled his fist in anger. He didn’t know why he was acting this way. Maybe he was just mad at Emma for giving out her number like that without listening to him as a friend.

What was he even thinking? He is only a friend and his opinion shouldn’t matter on things like this. She was free to give out her number to whoever she wanted and it shouldn’t be any of his concern.

Robert ruffled his hair and went to join them in the car. He turned on the ignition and drove out of the big compound.

Emma did not even acknowledge his presence as she was busy with her phone.

Robert know he shouldn’t feel any way about this but he couldn’t stop the hurt he was feeling at that point.

Crazy, right?

“What are you doing here?” Marshall snarled.

Abby was about to enter Tara’s ward when Marshall stepped out with two nurses.

“I will like to see how Tara is doing.” She said.

“As what?” He queried.

“Tara might not be my patient anymore but I still care about her.”

“And I ask again, as what?”

“What kind of question is that?”

“An important question, Dr. Abby. Tara is my patient and her health is my priority. You once fed her cupcake, remember? I don’t want that mistake to repeat itself under my watch.”

“I have learned my mistake, Dr. Marshall. I would never do anything to hurt Tara on purpose.” She stated.

“I don’t care. I told you to stay away from her ward, didn’t I? Don’t let me get the director involved in this case because you are going to regret it. Now leave.”

Abby only wanted to see how her favorite patient was doing. Was that wrong?

She might not be Tara’s doctor anymore but she still loves and care for the child.

Why was Marshall acting this way? Was that even a question she should be wondering about? Of course, he wants to spite her.

She nodded her head and walked away without saying anything.

“Listen carefully,” Marshall began as he faced the two nurses behind him. “don’t let Dr. Abby anywhere close to this ward. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes, doc.”

“Good.” He scoffed and walked away, smirking to himself.

Abigail was on the rooftop, seated on a bench close to the railing.

She took a sip of the hot chocolate Lily had bought for her, heaving out a de-ep breath.

She was pissed, sad, and annoyed.

To be frank, she missed Mr. Gilbert so much. He was like a father figure to her.

He was jovial, friendly, and nice. Even though he was always going throu-ghpain, he constantly found ways to make her happy.

Abby let out another sigh and hung her head low, staring at the ground.

She wanted to cry. The emotions are stuck up in her chest and she wants to relieve herself of the burden but can’t.

She remembered the words of that monster. It was as if he was whispering them into her ears.

≤!≥ Don’t cry, honey. Tears are a sign of weakness. You want to be like me, don’t you? Now, take all these pains and don’t let a tear fall≤!≥

He had placed a very hot iron on the skin of her back after mumbling those words to her.

Abigail gripped the cup of hot chocolate she was holding. The cup pressed together and the drink started spilling out of the cup but she didn’t realize it.

At that moment, she could feel the burn in her back. It felt like she was going throu-ghthe pain over and over again. It always feels that way.

Abby’s breath was caught up in her throat.

≤!≥Don’t cry, baby. You are doing well for Daddy.≤!≥

She didn’t cry while he a-ssaulted her. She didn’t let out a sound. She was like a statue who can’t feel any damn thing and the monster liked it. He praised her for it.

Abby let out a shaky breath and dropped to the ground, releasing the cup of hot chocolate she have been holding.

The little drink that was remaining in the cup spilled over but she didn’t care.

She was subconscious of her surrounding.

Abby didn’t know where she was at that point. However, all she could feel was his breath. All she heard was his voice. She was dragged back into her past. A place she can’t escape.

Abigail brou-ght her knees close to her chest and hug-ged them, trembling.

≤!≥Good girl. You are becoming more like me, honey. A strong girl should never cry. Never.≤!≥

Someone suddenly touched Abby on the shoulder, pulling her out of the past and away from the monster.

“Ahh!” She screamed, drawing away from the person immediately.

“Dr. Abby, are you okay?” The familiar voice asked.

Abigail was still trying to register her surrounding. Sweat shimmered over her body. The only escape she knows was under a bed but too bad there was no bed around the rooftop.

“Dr. Abby?” The voice called again, reaching out to touch her but she quickly pulled away. “Are you okay?”

Abigail finally looked up to find her director, Jersey, looking down at her with concern and worry on his face.

Was he worried about her? She wondered.

“Sir…” She called out in a raspy voice.

“What is going on with you? Did something happen? Are you alright?” He asked her.

She wiped her forehead and stood up to her feet, dusting off dirt from her dress.

“Ye…yes. I’m alright.” She replied.

“Are you sure? You don’t look alright to me.” He narrowed his eyes at her.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry for looking like a mess in front of you.” She mumbled.

He silently watched her. Something was definitely wrong with her. He could sense it but he can’t pressure her into talking.

“What are you doing here?” He asked.

Abby cleared her throat, wiping out more sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.

“I needed fresh air, that’s all.”

“Hmm.” Jersey buried his hands inside his pocket. “I heard you lost a patient. I’m sorry about that.”

She forced a smile on her face. “It’s part of the job. Doctors lose patients. It su-cks however, it is something we should get used to.”

“Well, yeah. But you don’t seem to have gotten used to it.”

“Mr. Gilbert was like a father to me. I know I shouldn’t get attached to my patients but…”

“Who said you shouldn’t get attached to your patients?” He cut her off.

“Excuse me?”

“Do you know what patients see their doctor as?” He questioned.

Abby bites her lower li-p, not saying anything.

“A friend. A companion. Someone they could trust. Some of them even see the doctor as their family. I don’t know Mr. Gilbert but if you saw him as a father then he must have also seen you as a daughter. Because he treated you as a daughter for you to see him as a father.” He smiled. “It’s not a crime to get attached to your patients, Dr. Abby.”

“I think it is.” She argued.

Jersey raised a questioning brow at her. “Why?”

“Ward 302,”

“Ward 302…I think I’ve heard about that ward. Isn’t she the patient I took away from you?”

Abby nodded her head. “Yes. She trusts me, sir. I don’t think she can ever get fond of Dr. Marshall as much as she is fond of me.”

“Are you trying to make me go back to my judgment?”

“What? Of course not. I swear.” She paused. “I might not be her doctor anymore but can I at least visit her ward once in a while? She feels like I want to abandon her, I want to make her know that I will always be with her even if I am no longer her doctor.” She stated.

“You should have this discussion with Dr. Marshall, and Dr. Abby. He is the doctor in charge of her and not me.”

Abby let out a de-ep breath of defeat and nodded. “Yeah…I’m sorry for asking you.” She picked up the empty cup of hot chocolate on the ground. “I should leave.”

Jersey drew out a black handkerchief from his pocket and gave it to her. “Here.”

Abby stared down at it before looking up at his face. “No, thank you.”

She left the rooftop without waiting to hear any word from him.

Jersey watched after her until she disappeared from his sight. He sighed and ma-ssaged his temple, clenching the handkerchief he was holding in his other hand.
