Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Eight

"What are you doing here? What are you doing in the hospital? You didn't tell me you were going to come here when I left you at home. What happened? Are you okay?" Roland asks Nikki as soon as he saw her at the hospital's reception area. He was wearing his cleaner's uniform and holding a mop stick as well as a bucket of water. He was busy with work but had to rush to meet Nikki when he saw her.

"I'm here to abort the babies." Nikki said. She was chewing gum and she was using it to blow bubbles. The way she chewed the gum showed someone who was done with whatever stress she was going through and was ready to take a break and rest. She also knew that she was intentionally putting Roland under pressure so that she would get the important information she desperately wants.

"What? You can't abort the babies. That's not a good idea. I mean, there must be another way out of this situation and I'm really sure abortion is not one of them. You can't terminate the twins. That's immensely cruel. It is also dangerous for you. What if something bad happens to you in the process of the abortion?

Please, don't even think about it." Roland said. He quickly dropped the bucket of water he was holding and also dropped the mop stick. He pulled Nikki to a hidden place to persuade her to call off the abortion.

"I'm going to do it. In fact, I have already booked my session with the nurses and I have paid for it. I can't be carrying babies that I don't know their father. It is shameful to me. Because of it, my husband has chased me out of his house. I cannot even run to my mother and father's house because of shame. What am I going to tell my friends and family? How am I going to explain to them that I got pregnant for another man while still living under my husband's roof? This is too much for me to bear and I think the best thing to do is to abort the babies so that my husband will allow me back into his house." Nikki said. She was still chewing the gum and using it to make bubbles. They were standing under a shade of one of the trees in the hospital compound.

"You can't do this Nikki! Please, abandon this idea. You have no idea what these babies would become in the future. You have no idea why God put them in your womb. Why would you want to do such an evil thing against them?

They are innocent for goodness sake and they did not put themselves into your womb. You cannot abort them. I will not allow this to happen." Roland said forcefully. He was becoming emotional and Nikki could see that he felt for the babies as if though there was something he was hiding. The way he was talking shows that he took the whole thing personal and he seriously did not want anything bad to happen to the children in Nikki's womb.

"Since I have arrived at this hospital and I have

booked and paid for the abortion, nothing will

stop me from getting it done. I'm not going back

home with these babies in my womb. They have

brought me shame and nothing more. Since I

left my husband's house, he has not even

thought of looking for me. That means he is

disappointed in me because of what I did. I

have to get rid of the babies so that my

husband will come back to get me." Nikki said

as she made to leave, but Roland held her back..

"Stop what you are trying to do because it is evil. Do you know how many women out there who are looking for even one child? Some have stayed many years in their marriages without conceiving. But God has given you twins without stress and you want to terminate them?

You cannot do this. You are obviously wiser than this. There must be another way out of this trouble." Roland remarked while still holding Nikki and stopping her from going to the nurses. At that moment, a nurse came to fetch Nikki, telling her that they have been waiting for her to come so that they could perform the abortion.

"We have been waiting for you. I mean, I have searched for you everywhere in the hospital premises. We are ready for you and everything have been prepared." The nurse said, but Roland dismissed the young lady with a wave of the hand.

"Please, go away, she did not come here to do any abortion. She must have been joking." Roland tells the nurse.

"What do you mean she was joking? Is she a child?" The nurse asked. This question got Roland angry and he approached her with red eyes.

"Look, if anything happen to those babies in her womb, I'm going to hold you directly responsible. In fact, I'm going to kill you." Roland said to the nurse while holding and shaking her forcefully. The nurse got scared and ran away.

"Allow me to go to them before another person will take my turn. I don't want to return to this place tomorrow for the same thing. You have been saying there must be another way out but you are not making any suggestions on how I can find the person who got me pregnant. Allow me to abort these babies and have my peace of mind back." Nikki said. She had become serious, but she also noticed that Roland was not going to give her any space to do what she wanted. When she saw how Roland treated the nurse that came to call her, she knew that he had the key to the information she was looking for.

"I'm not going to allow you abort those children. You have to kill me first before you will kill them." Roland said, looking directly into Nikki's eyes.

"Why are you so interested in the children? You are just a stranger to me and you only picked me by the roadside and housed me for a few days and you are trying to tell me what to do with my life? Are you the one to decide for me? I'm an adult for goodness sake. Allow me take my own decisions and live with the consequences" Nikki said, hands akimbo.

"I will not allow you abort those babies. This can only happen over my dead body." Roland said, still looking at Nikki.

"Why? What is your concern?" Nikki asked.

"Because they are my babies. I got you pregnant. I'm the father of those babies and if you abort them, you will have me to contend with." Roland said as he left the scene.
