Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Seven

"So, you work at the hospital? Why didn't you tell me the truth when I asked? What are you hiding from me?" Nikki asked as soon as she opened the door for Roland when he came back from work. She was still sleeping when he returned and it was his knock that woke her up from sleep. She was not smiling when Roland entered the house and he immediately suspected that something could be wrong.

"What? What are you talking about? I told you that I work at the supermarket. That wasn't a lie. What I told you was true. I work at the supermarket." Roland tells Nikki but it was clear to him that Nikki did not buy whatever it was that he was saying. Her face was still strong and she was still steaming like a pot of boiling water on fire.

"I ask again. Why did you lie to me that you work at the supermarket instead of telling me the truth? Where do you really work? At the supermarket or at the hospital?" Nikki asked again.

"I told you I work at the supermarket and that's the truth." Roland said angrily as he left the room and went into the bathroom to take his bathe. There and then, Nikki started packing her clothes into her small bags in readiness to leave the house. She felt hurt even though she knew she was not supposed to get angry at Roland who was just helping her. However, she felt the need to leave the house since Roland could not tell her a simple truth of where he works. She felt hurt.

When Roland came out of the bathroom, he saw Nikki ready to leave his room and he was alarmed.

"Where are you going? What is the problem? Why did you pack your bags?" Roland asked.

"I was just waiting for you so that I can tell you that I'm leaving. I would have left in your absence when you were at work, but I reasoned it would not be right for me to do that because you have been of great help to me. Treating you that way would be grossly wrong. But I just want to tell you I felt hurt because you lied to me concerning where you work. I would like to say thank you so much for accepting me into your house and taking good care of me all these while, but I have to go now." Nikki said as she took her bag and made to leave the house.

"Wait, Nikki, wait! It has not reached this level. I mean, I was going to tell you where I work. I was just waiting for the right time." Roland said when he sensed that the situation was becoming very serious.

"When were you going to tell me? When is the right time? I asked you in the morning and you said you work at the supermarket. I secretly followed you and I personally saw when you rode past the supermarket and entered the hospital. Why did you lie to me?" Nikki asked with tears in her eyes. She herself did not know why she was crying. She did not know if she was supposed to cry. She was not sure if she felt anything like love in her heart for Roland, but her heart was just filled by the events of the past weeks and tears no longer waste time to pour down from her eyes.

"You followed me? Why? That's wrong and it is an invasion of privacy. Are you a spy? Why were you following me secretly like an investigative police officer?" Roland said. At that moment, Nikki dashed to the place where Roland keeps his clothes and whipped out the cleaner's uniform she had seen in the morning.

"What is this? I saw this in the morning and I became suspicious. Why are you hiding you work place from me?" Nikki asked angrily.

"I'm sorry and yes, I'm a cleaner at the hospital. Look, you should not leave because you are pregnant and your body does not need the stress of living outside under the vagaries of weather conditions. Stay with me and I promise I will never lie to you again." Roland said.

"Now that you have agreed that you work at the hospital as a cleaner, there are some things I want to ask you. There is a huge burden in my heart and I would like to clear it. You know my husband chased me away because I'm pregnant for another man. The worse is that I don't even know who got me pregnant. I got pregnant when I was hospitalized in the same hospital where you work. And When I followed you to the hospital this morning, I saw that you are the cleaner assigned to Ward 10 where I stayed for six months. Tell me, did you know who I'm? I mean, is there a possibility that you were the one cleaning that Ward 10 at the time when I was hospitalized? I'm asking because your face looks familiar, just that I was unconscious at the time and I cannot clearly remember you. So, do you know me?" Nikki asked. Roland was made uncomfortable by the question because he was not expecting that one.

"I was just assigned to Ward 10 this week. I was cleaning the reception area at the time you are talking about. Sincerely speaking, I don't know who you and I didn't know there was someone like you at the hospital." Roland said.

"But did you by any chance enter Ward 10 six months ago? Your face looks like I saw you there once." Nikki continued to ask.

"I said I did not enter Ward 10. I only started going there this week. Are you suspecting me of anything?" Roland asked.

"No! Not at all! I'm just trying to find the man who got me pregnant. It happened at the hospital. I want to know if you know what happened to me. I wanted to know if you heard or saw anything. But it's fine if you said you know nothing about my stay at the hospital. Well, I guess I forgive you for telling me lies about where you work." Nikki said.

"I'm sorry I did not cook the jollof rice again. I was unhappy throughout the day." Nikki said with a gentle smile.

"It's fine actually. I bought fruits for us to eat." Roland whipped out his bag and gave some fruits to Nikki. After eating, they went to bed.

As she slept that night, Nikki concluded that the best thing she would do would be to abort the babies the next day. She wants to go back to her husband's house.
