Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Six

"What kind of work do you do? I mean, where do you work? How do you get the money you are using to take care of me? I'm asking because you have helped me a lot and I just thought I should know more about you. Please, don't be offended by my inquisitiveness." Nikki said to Roland, for that was the real name of the biker who picked her from the roadside two weeks ago. Days have passed since she came to live with Roland who has now taken a full responsibility for her happiness.

"Please, can you tell me a bit more about yourself? Where do you work? Or, are you a business man? If you are a business man, would like to come to your shop and help you. I'm not lazy, I can actually do many things." Nikki said to Roland who was preparing for work that morning.

"I work at a supermarket. I'm a supermarket cashier. Don't worry, one day, I will take you to work so that you can see what I do for a living. But for now, I just want you to be comfortable and happy." Roland said as he buttoned up his shirt, tucked it into his trouser and buckled his belt in readiness to leave the house. He was dressed like an accountant.

"Okay, I will very much like to see the supermarket where you work. What would you like to eat when you come back from work?" Nikki asked. Although, Roland had refused to allow her to cook in the house, she had always insisted that as a woman, it was her duty to cook.

Roland had often enjoyed her meals even though he pretended not to allow her cook because of her pregnancy.

"Can you make jollof rice? It has been long we ate jollof rice. We have been eating white rice and stew, fufu and beans but we have to eat jollof today. Please, can you make jollof?" Roland asked with a gentle smile on his face.

"Of course! I will cook anything you want to eat. You have been so good to me and I can endure a few hours in the kitchen for your sake. Consider it done. When you come back from work, I will serve you a deliciously prepared jollof rice." Nikki said as she hugged Roland before he left the house to go to work.

All these while, Nikki has been curious on knowing who Roland really is. One part of her brain tells her she has seen Roland somewhere in the past, but the other part was in doubt. She

was trying desperately to recall the place she

had known Roland but she couldn't. But as she

was entering the kitchen to go and commence

cooking, she looked at the place where Roland

hung his dresses and she saw a work uniform.

The name on it reads "Roland Nelson, hospital

cleaner." Nikki was surprised when she saw

that and she began to wonder if Roland worked

at the hospital or at a supermarket.

"Did he lie to me about his work place? But why would a man tell a lie about the place he works? Even if he is a cleaner, he should be proud of himself and his work. After all, it is the cleaning work that puts food on his table. I don't know if he is telling lies, but I will find out for myself." Nikki said as she quickly dressed up and left the room.

Luckily for her, when she got to the main road, Roland was still there waiting to cross to his lain with his small motorcycle. The road was busy, so he was being careful to avoid an accident. Nikki quickly hid herself in one corner and watched as Roland crossed the road. She then flagged an Okada rider.

"Follow that man. Wherever he turns, follow him. Don't ride too fast, I just want to check something. Make sure you don't overtake him and make sure he doesn't know we are following him. I don't want him to see me." Nikki tells the motorcyclist who zoomed off without delay.

It was a 30 minutes ride and the Okada man did not disappoint. He followed Roland judiciously and they never lost sight of him. Nikki was surprised when Roland rode his bike and passed the supermarket where he had said he worked.

"Where is he riding to? This is the supermarket now and he is supposed to enter here.

Something is not right." Nikki said as the Okada. man continued to follow Rolland until he turned towards the direction of the hospital where Nikki was hospitalized for six months.

"What is he going to do at the hospital? Does it mean the cleaner's dress I saw belongs to him? I will find out today." Nikki tells herself. Soon, Roland entered the hospital and packed his bike at one corner under a shade. Nikki also told the biker to stop and she walked and followed Roland alone. She saw as Roland entered a small room and changed into a dress that looks

exactly like the one Nikki saw at home. When he came out of the room, he had mop, broom and a bucket in his hands.

"So, he is actually a cleaner in this hospital? I said it that I have seen this man somewhere before." Nikki said as her mind flashed back a bit. She did not stop following Roland as he entered the main hospital building and went straight to ward 10 and started cleaning. Nikki watched him from a distance from one of the windows.

"My goodness! So, he is the cleaner of the ward where I was kept for six months? I said it that he looks familiar to me. My God, I wish I could remember everything that happened six months ago at once. So, this man is a cleaner?" Nikki asked herself. She heard as some nurses were coming close to where she was, so she snook out and left the building. She went back to meet the Okada man who was waiting for her.

"Take me back to where you carried me." Nikki said while panting as if she had chased a fast rabbit.

Nikki got home and she was unable to cook as she was thinking and trying to remember everything that happened at the hospital.

"Roland has some questions to answer when he comes back." Nikki said to herself as she crashed on the bed and slept off. Afternoon sleep hits differently, so she did not wake up until Roland was back from work.
