Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Five

"Instead of me to abort this pregnancy, I will rather leave your house. How can you say I should abort twin prengnacy? They are twins for goodness sake and they are totally innocent. Whatever we are saying right now, the children don't know and they can't be held responsible for our shortcomings. After all, they did not bring themselves into my womb. Someone put them there and they can't be blamed for the person's treachery. I will rather leave this marriage instead of losing my babies." Nikki said with tears. She had cried for a very long time because her husband, Duke, was not ready to accept the babies and he was insisting that she must terminate the pregnancy.

"You don't even know if these are the only babies that God would ever give to me in this my life. Not that I'm happy that I'm pregnant for another man, but two wrongs can never make a right. I'm ready to quit the marriage instead of terminating the pregnancy. It's cruel and I will not be party to that. I will keep these babies, give birth to them and nurture them until I'm able to find their father, even if it means living outside this home." Nikki said. She was still crying and Duke was not ready to see reasons

with her. He was drinking a bottle of bear, behaving as if he was not even hearing what Nikki was saying. He really didn't care if she left him or not. He did not care about the babies. He just did not want to raise another man's children and he was very serious about it.

"I was not joking when I said you should go in

there and move your things out of my house

until you can explain to me who got you

pregnant. Also, if you accept for us to terminate

the pregnancy, I will drive you now to the

hospital for them to do the needful. I did not

blame the babies for coming into your womb.

But what I can never do is to raise another

man's children. I have never impregnated

another man's wife, so nobody should

Impregnate my own and think I will allow it

stand. I will not accept it. It's either we terminate

the pregnancy or you pack out of my house this

moment. No going back on my decision." Duke

said. He did not raise his voice anymore. He

was just talking gently but his words carried

weight.

"I will leave your house then. I'm not ready to terminate the pregnancy. I will keep the babies." Nikki said as she left the living room into her room to get ready for her departure.

"If you are leaving, so be it. As soon as you leave this house, I will marry another wife who can bear my own children." Duke said as he sipped his bear copiously. He turned on the TV. Just then, Nikki came out with her bag and left the house and Duke did not try to stop her. She was heartbroken but she also was strong, deciding not to let anything stop her from keeping the babies.

"So this is how my marriage has come to an end? How did this happen to me? How did I find myself in this kind of terrible situation? How did I get pregnant without knowing who the father of my babies is? Why is my husband so cruel to me? Why did he chase me out? I never knew I married such a wicked man. But where do I go now? Who will agree I go to live with?" Nikki was questioning herself as soon as she he came out of Duke's house. As the sun hit her on her forehead, reality began to sink. The sun was so hot such that she decided to rest under a shade used by a roadside motorcycle mechanic. She sat there for almost three hours and even the man who owned the shop wanted to close for the day and Nikki was still there. She was even sleeping. The mechanic tapped her gently and asked her to leave.

"Madam, I want to close for the day." The man said respectfully.

"Alright! I will be on my way. Thank you for allowing me to rest here." Nikki responded. Just before she left the shop, a man rode his small bike into the mechanic workshop and requested the mechanic to help him change his plug.

"I have closed for the day." The mechanic said.

"Please help me. I have nowhere else to go. The motorcycle is disturbing me." The biker said. Just then, the biker lifted his face and saw Nikki standing absentmindedly.

He did not say anything to her yet, but he immediately knew Nikki was stranded. When the mechanic was done changing the plug for him, he rode his bike close to where Nikki was standing and then applied the breaks.

"Do you need a ride? You look very stressed out and this is not good for your baby. I can take you home if you wouldn't mind me helping." The rider said.

"I have no home to go to. I have been chased out of my home." Nikki said.

"That's a pity. Well, I can take you to my place. I can accommodate you for a few days until you find you feet. Hop onto the bike let's go." The biker said. Nikki was a bit reluctant, but with a little more prodding by the biker, she hopped onto the bike's passenger seat. After about 30 minutes, the biker branched off into the streets and entered a face-me-l-face-you compound.

"This is where I live." The biker said. When they got into the room, he served Nikki a wrap of suya which he had bought by the roadside. The time was already 7pm, so he served her egusi soup and eba. He also gave her water to shower and then they went to bed. As she slept that night, Nikki kept thinking who the good Samaritan helping her was.
