Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Four

"Who got me pregnant? I need a straight and truthful answer that will get me out of the mess I'm in right now. Don't even dare to lie to me because no other person can offer a good explanation except you. Who got me pregnant? How did I get pregnant under your care? For six months, I never left this facility and my husband did not touch me either. So, how did the two babies get into my womb?" Nikki asked Dr Mark as soon as she entered his office. She was visibly tensed.

"Please, sit down. I believe we are not fighting and this situation can be handled amicably. Sit down Nikki. Calm down so as not to harm the babies in your womb. The situation has not reached the level where everyone would be acting in an irrational way." Dr Mark said to Nikki but she did not listen to him.

"It has actually reached that level! I'm not even supposed to be talking to you in a low tone. By now, you are supposed to be cooling your heels in jail, explaining to security agents how an unconscious woman got pregnant while under your custody." Nikki said as her voice rose to a high pitch.

"I have told you to calm down." Dr Mark said calmly, trying to sooth Nikki with cool voice, but she was not having it.

"I have told you that I'm not calming down. Stop telling me to calm down. I'm at the verge of losing my marriage. This whole situation is eating deep into my relationship with my husband. He has even started to suspect that I left the hospital facility to see another many when he was not around. How come no one has the answer to the questions he has been asking? How did I get pregnant under your custody Dr Mark? It's either you tell me the truth. or I will involve the police and you will lose your practicing license. Who got me pregnant for the very last time, I ask." Dr Mark realized that there were no words soothing enough to calm Nikki down. He decided to allow her to stand as she had rejected the seat he offered. Sometimes, it is good to allow angry people to rant and reach the limit of their anger. However, in the case of Nikki, there seemed to be no limit. The worse was that Dr Mark did not have the answers she was looking for.

"I do not have answers to your questions. I was not the one who got you pregnant but I'm ready to help find the person only if you calm down and listen to me." Dr Mark said.

"How can you not know who got me pregnant? You are the chief medical director in this hospital and you examined me everyday and night. How could I have taken in without your knowledge? That means you are incompetent and you will pay for your incompetence." Nikki lamented. She could not bear it anymore, so she started crying. Her tears were falling on the tarred floor like hail stones from the first rain of the year. She was in deep pains and she wished she could just find the man who took advantage of her when she was in her lowest moment to get her pregnant.

"Please, who got me pregnant? I'm going to involve the police in this case." Nikki said as her voice was getting low, not because she was becoming calm, but because she was tired of crying and talking. She just wanted quick answers.

"The truth is that I don't know. It is true that you were under my custody and care for six months but I can't explain how you got pregnant. It is like a mystery to me as well. But what I'm promising you is that I will get to the bottom of this matter and fish out the person who did this to you?" Dr Mark said calmly.

"My marriage is at stake here. I can no longer confront my husband with a pregnancy that is not his. In fact, he has asked me to leave his house. He has said I should look for the person who got me pregnant and start living with him. He has asked me to move out of his house. My marriage is completely over because of this problem. There has to be a quick solution that would convince my husband that I did not do anything wrong." Nikki said. She was still crying. She got tired of standing and decided on her own to sit on the seat in Dr Mark's office. Despite the air-conditioner in the office, she was still sweating profusely. She was in deep emotional distress such that even if she was put in a refrigerator, she will still sweat.

"I have told you the hospital management is investigating the whole thing. I will have an answer for you in a week's time. I promise to get to the root of this matter and it will be resolved in your favour." The doctor told Nikki who was not convinced.

"That is a cock-n-bull story. It is already now too late. My husband is pushing me out and suspecting that I cheated on him and you are saying you will resolve the matter in one week? That is obviously too far. Please, do something as fast as possible." Nikki pleaded with the doctor. She stood up and left the office in distress. She did not get the answer she was looking for. She became more confused than before. Nikki was in pain as she entered her car and turned on the ignition.

"The doctor said he did not get me pregnant. In fact, he said categorically that he did not know what went wrong during the period I was in the hospital. Please, honey, he said they will be able to investigate and find the culprit in one week time. Can you give me sometime to resolve this?" Nikki pleaded with Duke, her husband as soon as she got home from the hospital.

"The only solution is to terminate the pregnancy. Duke said.

"What? That is cruel. I can't do that. They are twin babies and you can't just terminate them because we are yet to know who the father is." Nikki said.

"Well, then, you will have to leave my house because I can't raise another man's children. Go in there, pack your things and leave. Or follow me right now to the hospital so that we can terminate the pregnancy. The choice is yours." Duke said absentmindedly.
