Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Three

"Let me ask again, in case you did not hear the first question properly. Who is the father of the twin babies in your womb?" Duke asked his wife again with anger. From the way he was talking, his wife knew there was fire on the mountain. At first, she was confused but she later summoned the courage to talk when she realized Duke was not joking with her.

"The question you are asking is very surprising. Are you not my husband? I don't have any other man that touches me except you. Obviously, the pregnancy belongs to you. You are the father of the twins. You are getting me scared. At first, you refused to talk to me after the pregnancy scan, and now, you are questioning the paternity of the children I'm carrying as if I have any other husband who I live with. You are the father of the babies." Nikki said apprehensively. She did not understand what was going on. But she should actually know because the nurses who scanned her told her she was two months pregnant. She should know because she has only spent two weeks with her husband. There has to be an explanation.

"What did the nurses say to you?" Duke asked forcefully after looking at his wife from head to toe.

"They said I'm carrying twins, which I thought would make you happy, but here I'm answering questions as if I'm a court of law." Nikki said.

"Don't worry, you will soon find out why I'm asking these questions. Tell me, how many months have you been pregnant for? The nurses must have told you when you took in. How many months?" Duke asked again, looking his wife directly in the eyes as if to make sure she won't tell him lies.

"They said I'm two months pregnant." Nikki responded. At that time, Duke refused to talk anymore, but just kept silent so that Nikki would understand where he was going and the point he was trying to make. After about one minute of silence, Nikki finally understood and she became alarmed.

"Wait, that means I did not get pregnant in this house because I spent six months in the hospital. If I have been pretgnant for the past two months, that means my husband is not responsible since I have only been with you for two weeks." Nikki said, realizing that there was a serious problem.

"That is exactly what I'm saying. I'm happy you have realized the truth. Now, you have to explain what happened. Who got you pregnant? Because obviously, the babies did not enter your womb spiritually. Who is the father of those babies in your womb? You have to answer me before I do something terrible.

"Why are you asking me that question? You

know I will not be the right person to answer

you. I was unconscious for six good months.

How can an unconscious person be cheating on

her husband? I was in the hospital ward for

goodness sake and there was no way I could go

out and see another man. I could not have

cheated on you and gotten pregnant while lying unconscious at the hospital. I don't know how to answer the question you are asking me." Nikki said. At that time, she had started crying and her tears were plenty enough to fill ten cups. Duke did not even behave as if he saw her tears. He continued to harmer one question after the other.

"How can you say you did not know what happened? I mean, even if you are sleeping, you would certainly know when a man touches you.

Being unconscious is not an excuse to get pregnant for another man. How can you not know when you were being touched by a man, to the extent that the man got you pregnant without your knowledge. I will not accept this pregnancy. There is no way I'm raising another man's children under my roof. You must tell me who got you pregnant or I will chase you out of my house." Duke said angrily. He was moving around the room, looking at the spinning ceiling fan as if it held answers to his questions.

"Honey please, stop. You are tormenting me with the questions and statements you are making. You and I know I was critically ill after the road accident that nearly took my life. I could not have known when a man touched me. All along, I was thinking I was pregnant for you, but now it has downed on me that there is a serious problem." Nikki said with tears in her eyes. It was a distressing situation for her and she knew she had to find a solution fast to save her marriage.

"Stop saying the things you are saying. There is no way a man would touch a woman and the woman would claim not to be aware she was touched. It even went on until you got pregnant. Who knows how many times you were touched.

I don't actually care who touched you or how you were touched, I just know that at the end of the day, I will not continue with this marriage. You have to find that man that got you pregnant and move to his house because seeing you alone is giving me emotional problems." Duke said as he left the living room in anger. Nikki was just there, crying profusely, trying to cast her mind back to the time she was at the hospital, but she was unable to remember anything.

She sat there and wept until she fell deeply asleep. Even when she woke up, she could not remember anything that happened since the last six months. She could only remember a few minutes to the time the accident that rendered her unconscious happened. She kept thinking but nothing came up. She was deeply stressed out.

"I will get to the root of this matter. I have to find out who got me pregnant. My husband is right. He is not the father of the babies. Then who got me pregnant?" Nikki asked herself. She grabbed her car keys and soon, she drove out of the compound. She went back to the hospital to confront Dr Mark.
