Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Two

"Your wife is two-months pregnant. Congratulations sir. We are happy for you. I'm also happy to inform you that your wife is expecting twins. This is a piece of good news for you. Congratulations once again sir." Nurse Nancy said to Duke who sat in the reception area waiting for the result of the ultrasound scan. The news was not totally unexpected. He knew all along that the babies were not his. That his wife had been pregnant for two months just helped to confirm his suspension. What he did not know however was that his wife was carrying twins.

"Can I have the result please? I have some scores to settle with the hospital management. There are so many questions begging for answers and I will get all the answers I seek." Duke said as he collected the paper from Nurse Nancy. His wife was still in the scan department resting. Duke walked back to the doctor's office to confront him again, this time around, with the scan result given to him by Nurse Nancy. Now, he has a concrete evidence to prove that his wife came back from the hospital with pregnancy. The nurse was surprised that Duke showed no sign of excitement nor joy when he was told of the twins in his wife's womb.

"There you have it." Duke said as he dropped the scan result on Dr Mark's table. He knew he was right, so he was ready to stand his ground and prove his point.

"What is this?" Dr Mark asked, pretending as if he did not know what was placed before him.

"That is the scan result. It shows that my wife is expecting twin babies. I want some explanations. And the explanations have to come quickly before I do something rash." Duke said with anger-ridden voice. He was ready to take the case to anywhere and prove his point.

"Honestly, I don't know what to say. You said the pregnancy is not yours. So, I don't even know if I should congratulate you or not. But all the same, this is a very great news. So, congratulations even if you still maintain that it was another man who got your wife pregnant." Dr Mark said while still scanning through the rest of the things that were written on the white paper. He kept reading until he got to the point where he saw the number of month Duke's wife has been pregnant for. He stopped for a while and took another look at the paper to be sure he was reading correctly.

"I see that your wife has been pregnant for two months." Dr Mark asked with surprise written all over his face. All the things that Duke has been saying, downed on him.

"I'm happy you are beginning to see the truth! Look, I don't care that the children are twins, I just don't want to raise another man's children. Why is it that my wife has been pregnant for two months when she just returned to my house two weeks ago from this same hospital? If she was unconscious for six months and I never touched her, how come she got pregnant? Who is responsible for the pregnancy? These are the questions the hospital management has to answer before I do something rash." Duke was now shouting and he was beginning to attract the attention of many people in the hospital.

"Calm down Duke! I don't think it has reached the level of doing something rash. I'm assuring you that I will get to the root of this matter. I will handle this situation well and it will end the way you would like it." Dr Mark was now pleading with Duke, but all his pleas fell on deaf ears.

"Don't tell me to calm down because if you were in my shoes, you will not accept to calm down. Anyway, the reason why I'm still a little bit silent is that I have not questioned my wife. I just want to question her first before I will take my decision. However, I'm assuring you that if I come back to the this place without getting the answers I seek, everyone in this hospital will have me to contend with. I have warned you. You people should get to the root of this matter before I return." Duke said as he stormed out of the Dr Mark's office. As he was leaving, the doctor kept calling him but he paid no attention.

When Duke got to his car, his wife was already seated, waiting for him to come and drive her home.

"You don't look happy honey. Have you seen the scan result at all? It shows that we are expecting twin babies. I was thinking you will jump up and hug me immediately you see me. Aren't you happy? You are going to be the father of twins. I'm so excited, I have always wanted to have twin children and God has finally answered my prayers. Congratulations to us honey." Nikki, Duke's wife said as soon as he came into the car and turned on the ignition. Duke said nothing and just drove out of the hospital in silence. Nikki was wondering what the problem could be.

"My love, is everything alright? Why are you not talking to me? What is the problem? Did the doctor or the nurses say anything about the babies? Why are you moody? You are not excited at all and you just got a very good news. Why are you behaving in a strange manner? Why are you cold towards me? Did I do anything wrong?" Nikki asked. She was scared becasuse her husband refused to talk to her. Duke did not say a word until they got home. He drove into the compound and parked the car and then they walked into the living room. As soon as they got into the living room, Duke started talking.

"Who got you pregnant? I mean, who is the father of the babies in your womb? Tell me Nikki, who impregnated you? Who is responsible for the pregnancy?" Duke asked calmly.
