The Unbearable Burden, Episode Six

"You keep leaving me each night. I'm scared

because this house is usually very lonely when

I'm alone. I understand that your boyfriend is

sick, but it is beginning to be a little bit awkward

that he hasn't recovered for many weeks when

you said it was malaria. When is he going to

recover? Or will continue sleeping all alone in

this big apartment? Maybe I should just go back

to my husband's house because I'm not getting

the emotional support I need here. I have

already packed my bags to leave." Purity said

as soon as Lucia returned from her usual

outings. It has been one month since Purity

came to stay with Lucia out of fear of her

husband. And since then, Lucia has been

sleeping away from the house and she always

said her boyfriend's illness returned and that, in

fact, he has been hospitalized. Also, she had

refused to allow Purity to follow her. Purity is

fed up and she has decided to take the risk of

going back to her husband's house and try to

mend things.

"If you insist on leaving, the door is wide open for you." Lucia said. Purity was surprised that Lucia did not try to stop her from leaving as she used to do for the past one month. Lucia did not bring up the dangers Purity could face if she goes back to her husband neither did she try to make her afraid or to abandon the idea. Purity took her bags and walked out of the building and Lucia did not even move or stand up from where she was sitting. She was simply sipping wine from a glass cup. About five minutes later, Lucia sprang to her feet, picked up her car keys and started driving to Chima's house. The time was 7:30pm in the evening and as she drove out from the gate, she saw Purity still waiting to catch a taxi. Lucia simply negotiated into another street and avoided Purity.

"We will meet at your husband's house. Today, you will see and hear everything I have been trying to prevent you from hearing. I'm going to spill the whole beans this night. I have been patient enough and I have endured enough all these months. Now is the time for me to open up and tell you what is really going on." Lucia said. She was driving at a top speed because she did not want Purity to get to Chima's house before her. She wants to be there seated as the madam of the house before Purity would arrive.

"I'm happy that I have achieved my aim of becoming pregnant before Purity would gather the courage to move back to her husband's house. My dream has come true and my baby is kicking in my womb. Now is the time to open up to everyone and tell them the reason I'm doing what I'm doing. It would have been a bad thing if I had lost this battle. I know it is not over yet, but so far so good, I'm winning. Today is a very important day in this battle." Lucia said to herself, she was still cruising at a top speed. It did not take long before she arrived at Chima's house. She parked her car and came out elegantly.

Lucia walked into the main building and sat on a sofa in the living room. She turned on the television set, went to the refrigerator and got herself a chilled drink and then returned to her seat.

"By the time I finish with the two of you, you will understand the difference between 'egbe and egbe. This is just the beginning. The two of you are going to learn a bitter lesson today." Lucia said.

As she took sip after sip from the cup of red wine, the air conditioner in the room cooled her body with its misty breeze.

"For many days, weeks and months, I have waited for this day and finally, it has arrived. I'm so happy I have been able to reach this level in this battle. Now is the time for everyone to hear me out." Lucia said. Just then, Chima returned from work and opened the door. Lucia's heart Jumped because she thought it was Purity.

"What are you doing here again? I told you to

stop coming to my house. How many times will

I warn you before you steer clear of my house?

Do you want me to call the police and get you

arrested? Do you want me to lock you up

forever? I have been trying to respect you and

give you the chance to change your ways, but it

seems you are determined to go to jail. Stand up

this moment and leave my house and never

return. This is the last time I'm going to tell you

this. I'm going into my room to drop my back

and change. By the time I return, I don't want to

see you here. I'm married and you can't keep

coming to my house in the absence of my wife.

"Chima said to Lucia. He was actually

shouting, but all he was saying was like water

poured on a rock. Lucia did not care, neither did

she pay attention. She continued to sip her wine

and to prepare her mind for the real battle

ahead.

A short while after Chima left the living room, Purity entered. There was a lot of fear in her mind and she was walking carefully like a fowl that entered a new compound. Purity gently opened the door of the main building and entered the living room. She came face to face with Lucia who place her glass of wine on a table beside her.

"What are you doing here Lucia? Why are you in my husband's house in my absence?" Purity asked with surprise written all over her face.

"Well, as you can see, I'm in my husband's house." Lucia answered with confidence.

"What do you mean you are in your husband's house? The last time I checked, Chima was my husband and not yours. I understand that I moved out, but we are still married and we are not divorced yet. So, what are you doing here?" Purity asked again, this time around, more seriously.

"Well, soon, you will understand why I'm calling Chima my husband." Lucia said. Chima heard their voices and came out.

"There is fire on the mountain." Chima said when he saw Purity and Lucia confronting each other.
