The Unbearable Burden, Episode Five

"Where did you go last night? You never told me you were not going to come back home when you left home yesterday evening. Why didn't you tell me you were going to pass the night at the place you were going? I felt so lonely and sad." Purity said to Lucia immediately she entered the living room. She only had a red wrapper around her waist and she had just finished eating apples. There is still one apple in a place laying on the table. Lucia picked up the apple and ate it with speed.

"I went to see my boyfriend and he was very sick. I decided to stay back and care for him. I almost rushed him to the hospital because of the seriousness of the illness but he insisted he was going to recover at home. That was why I could not make it back home yesterday. Please, don't be angry. But I'm here now to look after you and our unborn baby." Lucia responded amid mouthfuls. She took another bite of the apple and chewed away like a hungry rabbit. She sat on one of the cushions in the room.

"You could have called me to let me know you were not going to come back. I was even worried that something bad had happened to you. I'm so sorry about your boyfriend. How is he feeling this morning?" Purity asked with concern on her face. She also sat down beside Lucia.

"He is getting better. At least, this morning, he could stand up from the bed to use the toilet by himself. Yesterday's night, he was unable to move unless I supported him. That's how serious it was, but he is far better this morning after taking the treatment I bought for him in the night." Lucia responded. She yawned like someone who was hungry and then stood up and rushed to the kitchen to fix food for herself. She knew she lied to Purity.

"I want to go back to my husband's house today because I'm worried about his wellbeing. I would like to go back in the evening. At least, let me check on him. I'm no longer confortable staying outside my husband's house. I'm a married woman and no matter what I have done, my husband have not chased me away himself. Instead, I'm the one chasing myself away because of fear. The fear in me may be unfounded because I have no proof that my husband wants to harm me. So, I have decided to go back to him and face the consequences of my actions." Purity said with so much confidence in her voice. She was standing behind Lucia who was making Golden Morn with hot water.

"Do you want to die?" Lucia asked..

"No! No way! I'm not dying and no one would kill me." Purity responded affirmatively. Her eyes were steadily fixed on Lucia who had started scooping the Golden Morn into her mouth like a hungry baby.

"You said you don't want to die but you still said you would like to go back to your husband's house. You and I know very well that Chima plans to kill you. His plan is to totally eliminate you from the face of the earth and marry another woman. Why do you think he served you breakfast on bed the morning after you told him you are pregnant for another man? He had poisoned the food. In fact, I saw that in my dream yesterday night. It was revealed to me that if you had eaten that food, you would have died without delay. You are lucky and wise to have flushed the food." Lucia said. Her voice was sounding like that of a native doctor who was delivering an important message from the gods. Purity on the other hand listened with heightened fear and unquenchable trepidation.

"Are you sure of what you are telling me? That means you are saying I should not go back?" Purity asked with trembling lips.

"That is what I'm saying. I'm telling you that you escaped death in the hands of your husband. I'm surprised you still want to go back to him after all I have told you. Please, protect your life and that of your unborn baby. It is better to stay alive and look after the baby than to die in the hands of Chima in the bid to make peace." Lucia's voice came like a prophecy.

"Thank you for protecting me. Thank you for telling me the dream. I will stay back." Purity said as she took a spoon and joined Lucia to eat the Golden Morn.

Later in the evening, Lucia sneaked out again to Chima's house without telling Purity. When she got there, she called Purity and told her she had gone to check on her boyfriend who was sick.

The time was 9pm already and Chima was in the living room watching television when Lucia walked in like the madam of the house who had returned from a far journey.

"I told you not to come here again until my wife is around. I told you I'm not comfortable with you staying around me in the absence of my wife. Why did you come back despite my warning in the morning?" Chima asked angrily.

"Why are you talking as if you did not enjoy last night? I gave you the way you wanted. Why are you pretending? Stop pretending and thank me for all I'm doing for you in the absence of your wife." Lucia said.

"What are you talking about? What happened between I and you last night? I can't remember anything. That reminds me, what did you do to me that made me to sleep off so deeply? I woke up very late in the morning and I could not even go to work again. What did you do to me yesterday?" Chima asked. Lucia drew closer and attempted to touch him, but he beat her hand away. Lucia brought out her handkerchief and blew something that looked like powder into Chima's face. He fell on the cushion and slept off the same way he slept last night.

Lucia dragged him to the bedroom and carried out bedroom action for the second time. Her aim is to get pregnant for Chima before Purity would get the chance to return to the house.
