The doctor walked out with his head down. Ephraim’s mum ran towards him and stared into his eyes searching for answers.

“Doctor! How is she? What’s going on?” She asked anxiously.

The doctor couldn’t say a word, he shook his head and looked down. It passed a message to her. She froze and went down.

She rolled on the floor and cried loudly. The nurses rushed to her and took the baby from her. She wallowed on the floor and cried bitterly. The doctor couldn’t hold his tears, he went into his office and cried.

Starr was awake, she cried. One of the nurses held her and pet her. Ephraim’s mum cried.

“Ginika why? Please wake up, please wake up and breastfeed your daughter, she needs you please, oh my God! Oh my God….God please wake her up, her baby needs her….her husband needs her.” She wailed bitterly.

The night was filled with bitterness, her death left sadness in every heart, every one in the hospital stayed awoke and mourned her death.

The night went by and the moon rise to its full glory but with the pain that Ginika had her last breathe already.

Ephraim came into the hospital with Aina the next morning with flowers and gifts. They alighted from the car excitingly. Aina couldn’t wait to see her best friend and her goddaughter. She rushed into the hospital building.

The doctor sighted them from afar, he blocked them before they entered into the ward and directed them to his office.

“Thank you so much doctor, where is my wife and daughter?, I can’t wait to see them again. He said.

The doctor went cold. Aina noticed his reaction.

” Doctor, is everything okay?” She quizzed.

” erhmm…Mr Ephraim, its so sad that she couldn’t hold on, she fought hard and we tried our best to save her but…”

Ephraim interrupted.

” But what? ” he yelled.

“I’m sorry” said the doctor.

Ephraim jumped up and grabbed his shirt, he screamed.

“What happened to my wife? What did you do to her?” He exclaimed.

Aina placed her hands on her head and cried bitterly, she left the office and went outside the hospital building, she paced the compound crying.

Memories of Ginika visited her, the care, laughter and moments they shared replayed in her head.

She wailed bitterly as she walked along the walkway.

Ephraim’s mother showed from a corner with groceries for the baby, she backed Starr , she looked tattered and destabilized as she approached. Aina ran into her arms and hugged her. They cried together.

Ephraim wailed on the floor.

“Ginika! Ginika!! Ginika!! Please don’t leave me my love, please come back to me, baby please” he wailed bitterly.

His mother walked with Aina and they cried together. It was a day of excruciating pain for the family.

The day went by and fate was accepted.

Arrangement was made on how her body would be moved to the morgue, Ephraim notified the doctor. The doctor invited him and her mother into the office.

“I am sorry for your loss, I need to tell you what Ginika told me before the operation which happened to be her wish, I need your approval to carry out her request before it’s too late” he explained.

Ephraim and his mother looked at one another.

“What are you talking about?” Ephraim asked.

Two days ago before the operation…

After the doctor told Ephraim’s mother to vacate the room as requested by Ginika.

Ginika cried in pain.

” Doctor, I want to make a wish and I want to know if it is possible or not.” she said.

The doctor stared at her quizzically.

“What is it?” He asked.

” This pain is too much and I am not sure where it would lead, in case I didn’t make it, I want you to do everything possible to donate my heart to my husband so that he can live on to take care of our child, is this possible? ” she quizzed.

The doctor was stunned.

He grabbed a chair and sat.

“Why are you talking like this, you will survive this with the child, please stop this weird thought” he pleaded.

Ginika coughed and held his hand.

“Doctor, I just said in case, is it possible? Please tell me” she inquired.

The doctor heaved a deep breath, he looked down.

“Well, it is better if the male is the donor but it doesnt mean it’s not possible, its just that it has a slim chance of success” he explained.

Ginika felt relieved.

“That is the word I want to hear, please make it possible, this is my wish and I want it to be possible because I know my husband wouldn’t be able to survive the pain of my death which might lead to his own because of his cardiovascular disease, please save my husband, promise me you would do your best” she said as she wallowed in pain.

The doctor assured her that he would try his best.

Ephraim fell from the chair and started crying after the doctor narrated what Ginika told him, his mother joined him.

“No, I don’t want, I can’t live without her. She is my everything. Let me die and join her. I was a dying man and she agreed to marry me, now she is dead because I impregnated her, I killed her! I killed her!!” He wailed bitterly.

The doctor stood up from his chair and went to meet him where he lay wailing.

“You need to do this for your child, do you want her death to be in vain? She donated her heart for you to move on for both of you, will you let that slip away? Will you be able to live with the thought of not granting her death wish?” The doctor persuaded him.

He sobbed quietly. He reasoned along with him and agreed with him

“Okay! You can go on with it” he approved.

Starr babbled from her sleep

The doctor handed over a form to him to fill and sign.

“What is this for?” He asked amidst tears.

This is to accept that you are approving that we should remove the organ and the other one is approving that you accept it. We need those forms to be filled before we carry our DCD on her” he explained.

Ephraim looked into his eyes searching for answers.

” Oh sorry, DCD means Donation after circulatory death, it is the process of removing the heart for the patient” he explained.

He signed both papers and handed them over to him.

Ephraim had sleepless nights for days, he stopped eating and going out. He blamed himself night and day for her death. He dreamed about her and hallucinated.

Ginika was to be buried, he insisted she was buried in his compound so as to feel her presence. It was the hardest decision he would make, his mother understood and approved it.

Her body was moved to the house and her burial was with few people with family and friends.

Effiong and his family, Aina and few sympathizers. Effiong held Ginika’s favourite flower in her hands and wept uncontrollably. Aina couldn’t stand on her feet, she sat on the floor looking tattered. Ephraim’s mother backed Starr and stood at a distance. Ephraim couldn’t come out from inside, he was broken, his bone feeble and his heart beat slowly.

After the pastor’s prayer, the coffin was lowered into the six feet dug on the empty land just at the back of the main building. It was time for the last respect by pouring sand into the grave before it is covered up.

Every other person did their own except Ephraim.

“Where is her husband?” Asked the pastor.

Effiong and one other man went in for Ephraim. They met him in his room naked on the floor wailing faintly, strength drained from his body.

They held him up.

“It is time for your last respect bro” said Effiong.

They dressed him in a black cloth and supported his arms to go outside. The sight of Ephraim by sympathizers brought another round of wailing.

He couldn’t walk on his own.

The shovel was handed over to him, he packed a small sand and stared at his wife’s coffin down the ground.

“No I can’t do this, she is not dead, I can hear her calling me, please open the coffin, she’s awake, I can hear her voice, open it!” He cried out loudly.

The atmosphere was filled with tears again, Effiong held his hand with the shovel and poured the sand.

He collapsed immediately.
