The doctor interrupted.

“(Clears throat) we don’t have all day, we need to begin now, please excuse us sir” he said.

Ephraim wouldn’t let go of her hand, he moved away gradually as his hand held onto hers till she broke free.

He left for the reception and started crying. His mother rushed to him and questioned him. Every attempt to talk resulted in tears.

The operation went for hours.

Few hours later, the doctor came out with a smile, Ephraim and his mother ran to him, they were breathing heavily.

“Congratulations, its a girl, the mother and child are doing fine.” he said.

Ephraim hugged him and shouted in excitement. His mother knelt down and started singing songs of praise.

“Can we see her now? He asked.

” no you can’t, she is still under examination and they are still cleaning up the baby, the nurses will let you know when you can see them, congratulations once again.” The doctor said.

“Thank you so much doctor, thank you, oh lord, I am so happy” Ephraim exclaimed excitingly.

Effiong celebrated with them.

Few hours later, they were granted access to see them. Ephraim went for his wife while his mother went for the baby, she played with her as she wallowed in her cradle bed.

Ephraim sat beside his wife and kissed his hand, she was asleep.

“Please don’t wake her, you might need to leave now, as you can see, she’s fine, we just want you to see her for few minute, you need to leave now, we only need only your mother here in case we need her to do something for her” said the nurse assigned to her.

The excitement on Ephraim’s face was priceless, he left.

It was already late at night, his mother assured him she would take good care of her.

She slept in the room with Ginika while Ephraim went back home, his inability to speak with Ginika after the operation did not sit well with him, he wanted to see her beautiful eyes and hear her voice again. But he couldn’t because she was asleep.

The night crawled in.

Ephraim’s mother sat on the chair and placed her head on the bed Ginika was sleeping so as to respond to her even with a touch.

She felt a touch, she jumped up.

“My daughter, how are you? What do you want? She asked.

Ginika felt weak, she moved slowly, she was in excruciating pain.

” Please bring my baby, I want to breastfeed her ” she said.

Ephraim’s mother was confused.

“But, I don’t know if the doctor would allow that, let me go and ask one of the nurses” she said and was about to leave. Ginika held her hand.

“No please, just bring her.” she said as she squeezed her face in pain.

Her lips were dried and her eyes were blurry.

She had no other option than to carry the baby and cautiously placed her on her chest, she also helped her bring out her breast and position it to the baby’s mouth.

The baby sucked anxiously.

Few minutes later, she handed the baby back to her.

“Thank you ma” she said and slept back.

” You are welcome, my daughter, please rest.” she said.

Ginika closed her eyes and slept off. Ephraim’s mother placed her head back to the position it was before and slept too.

Few minutes later, she heard Ginika grunting and breathing heavily. She held her and called her name but she wasn’t responding. She ran out to call the nurses.

One of the nurses ran into the doctor’s office to call him, he ran to the room, Ephraim’s mother ran after them.

“Please wait outside ma” said one of the nurses.

The doctor met Ginika breathing faintly and jerking off, he held her down and examined her with his stethoscope.

The baby started crying.

“Please take the baby to her mother in-law” the doctor told one of the nurses.

The nurse went for her in her cradle and took her out, she gave her to Ephraim’s mother and headed back.

Ephraim’s mother patted the baby as she cried loudly. She couldn’t hold her tears as well.

Nurses ran helter skelter around for medical equipment, the whole hospital was in disarray to save Ginika’s life.

Suddenly, she stopped moving.

The doctor clocked his hands together and placed them on her chest to mount pressure for resuscitation.

He pushed and pumped but nothing.

“Pass me the AED!” the doctor exclaimed as he was sweating profusely. One of the nurses brought it.

He rubbed a creamy substance on both pads and held them in both hands.

“Charge!” The nurse pushed a button on the device and he placed them on Ginika’s chest, it threw up her body . He placed the stethoscope on her but nothing moved.

He tried the exercise again but all went in vain.

Suddenly, Ginika exhaled heavily and left her mouth open, tears dripped slowly from her eyes.

The doctor threw his head down and heaved a deep breath. The nurses looked at him quizzically.

“What is it, doctor?” One of the nurses asked.

“She’s gone.” he replied.

He sat down on the chair and held his head. It saddened his heart that he couldn’t save her.

The nurses couldn’t hold their tears. They loved her.

She was a fighter.

The sun set at dawn.

The sun had gone to bed, the stars took over the sky.

When the inevitable visits, the spirit obeys.

Ginika gave up the ghost.
