He was rushed in and his pulse was beating slowly, all effort to revive him went futile, he was rushed to the hospital. The doctor examined him and discovered that he had not been taking his medications which had worsened his heart condition.

“We need to start preparing for the operation ma, we can’t do it here, we need to fly him abroad for the heart transplant, should I contact my colleagues over there for the process?” The doctor asked his mother.

She agreed and everything was fastened. Ephraim was moved abroad for the operation, and one of her sisters followed him. The operation was a success. He could feel a part of her at every beat of the heart. He sometimes felt how she felt while alive and some of her memories dropped in like a flash. He felt a part of her now lives in him.

He took a few months before he returned home. Starr was a bit bigger, she had the face of her mother. Beautiful long nose and gorgeous smile.

Effiong paid them a visit; he had become part of the family. He was in the garden with Ephraim having a conversation.

“I brought something for you.” he said.

“What is that?” Ephraim asked.

He stood up, walked to his car and brought out a sunflower planted in a small nylon cover and went back to meet Ephraim. He stared at him confusingly.

“What is this for?” He asked.

” Ginika once told me a secret and I think you should know about it” he said.

“Please tell me.” Ephraim asked curiously.

” She once told me her favourite flower is sunflower and she wished to come back as one when she’s dead, she further said that her mother is the sun, she would want her to smile at her everyday while she smiles at the stars through her beautiful yellowish nectar” he explained.

Ephraim brooded for a while. It now occurred to him why she decided to name their child Starr.

Effiong continued.

” I think as her husband, you need to grant this final wish, I think you should plant this on her grave, If it is okay by you and watch it grow ” he said.

Tears streamed down Ephraim’s eyes, he collected the flower and perceived the scent.

“Thank you for this Effiong, you don’t know what you have done, this means a lot to me. I am planting it right away, please join me” he said.

They went to the back of the house where her grave was, he dug it with his hand and carefully planted the flower.

“Darling, you have been a blessing to the world, I never knew how beautiful your heart was until I carried it, I feel your pains, your fear and everything that makes you move in life, I am not worthy of this heart but you decided to donate it to me so as to move on, you are more than a wife to me, you are my guardian Angel, I love you forever” he said and wept uncontrollably.

Effiong held him and led him back into the house.

5 years later.

Starr grew up like a grass, she calls her father, mama and father.

It bleeds his heart.

On a sunny day, when the sun was shining down mildly, he held her hand and led her to the back of the house where her mother was buried.

He squatted beside her and showed her the flower on her grave.

“See this flower baby, your mummy came back as this flower after she turned into an angel. She can see and smile at you, she can hear you too” he said.

” What is my mummy saying now?” She asked.

Ephraim kept quiet for a while.

“Look at that yellow nectar, is it beautiful or not?” He asked.

“It is beautiful, I love it.” Starr replied.

“Your mum is saying that you should be happy and she is always with you.” he said.

Starr grew to make sunflower her favourite flower and she wouldn’t stop visiting her mother’s grave to water the flower.

15 years later, Ephraim passed on.

Starr grew stronger like her mother and brave like her father.

She founded an initiative that was planned to help sickle cell and heart disease patients in honour of her parents.

She named it Sun-frame initiative.

A name carved out from her mother’s favourite flower ( Sun flower) and the last part of her father’s name (E frame).

The End.
