Ephraim couldn’t look into Ginika’s eyes, he stared at the floor, Ginika smiled. It was an absolute silence for a minute before John broke it.

“Erhmmm…I’m sorry about that, my mum can be like that sometimes, please don’t mind her…” he said and Ginika interrupted.

“Did she know?” She asked.

He became confused.

“Did she know what?” He quizzed.

“Did she know I am a sickle cell patient?”

He looked down.

“Yes, I told her.” he replied.

She dropped her drink and stood up, she walked towards the edge of the fence and faced the broad view, the breeze swam with her hair. He joined her.

” Have I said anything wrong? Please forgive me if I have, it was…” he stuttered.

“Ephraim, you deserve a woman that can live with you for the rest of your life, I don’t want to be a burden you won’t be able to carry, yes I have a thing for you, you are caring, cool, handsome and gentle but what about the long run, will your love be strong enough to sustain me when my crisis begin? Will you be able to stand by me, love me and take care of me or you’ll see me as another burden, I might die anytime, I am lucky I’m still alive, my mum died at the age of 25, her mother died at 24 and now I am 26, anything can happen Ephraim, won’t that break you more?” she lamented.

He held her hand and made her face him, he looked into her eyes and planted a kiss on her lips. She closed her eyes and responded.

“I don’t want someone that would live with me forever, I want someone that would make the little I have left a memorable one, I want to be in my dying bed feeling happy that I married someone that makes life fulfilling for me. I love you Ginika” he said.

Ginika shed tears.

They went back inside to give Ephraim’s mother the good news, she was excited. She held their hands and prayed in tears.

The prayer warrior in her emerged,she spoke in tongue and prophesized. After the prayer, she held her son, looked into his eyes and asked.

” should we make this quick?”

Ephraim looked at Ginika, she got the message and smiled.

“We will get back to you on that ma” said Ginika.

” This is the happiest day I’ll have in years, thank you my daughter, please don’t see me as ur mother In-law I am your mother” she said and hugged her.

Their love grew like grass, Ginika and Ephraim had forgotten their challenges, they had fun and enjoyed life.

Few weeks later, They got married.

Ephraim and Ginika went shopping on a weekend, the car park was full so they packed behind a car with the intention of grabbing what they wanted in the store and leave before the owner of the car came out.

Unfortunately for them, the owner came earlier than them. They were in the store when an announcement was made about a car that blocked another, and it was theirs. They rushed out to move their car and who Ginika saw made her day.

She saw Effiong, she screamed his name jumped into his arms without a second thought.

“Effiong! How are you, you look good Oh my God, how have you been, I’m sorry I did not reach out, a lot has been going on that’s why” she said.

Effiong smiled. The old feeling erupted, he stared at her.

“Oh, meet my husband, Ephraim, honey, meet my friend Effiong, we were neighbours when we were serving” she explained.

Ephraim and Effiong exchanged pleasantries.

“So, it was your car we blocked, we are sorry” Said Ginika.

A lady called out from Effiong’s car, heavily pregnant.

“Baby, what’s going on?”she said as he stepped out of the car.

” Is that your wife?” Ginika quizzed.

Effiong nodded in affirmation.

She was so excited, she walked briskly to her and hugged her after introducing herself.

“See who is going to become a father soon.” Ginika said with excitement.

Effiong words could be counted throughout the conversation. Ginika noticed. She held him with a gaze that expressed affection.

“Your wife is beautiful, you didn’t disappoint me” she said.

They exchanged their new contacts and departed.

“Always reach out Effiong!” Ginika exclaimed before she left.

Three months after their marriage, Ginika got pregnant and that was the beginning of hell for the couple. In her second trimester, The pregnancy came with challenges and Ginika was admitted when her crisis started with her pregnancy. She had miscarriage threat and her tissues were falling off.

Ginika had a partial stroke on her left hand as a result of irregular blood flow, this came with lots of pain. She was placed on intensive care. Ephraim blamed himself for getting her pregnant, he blamed himself for causing pain for the woman he loved.

He couldn’t concentrate on anything, his mother stayed with her in the hospital and made sure she received all necessary treatment regardless of the amount it would cost them.

Ehraimed noticed the pain wasn’t going away, he saw that the pregnancy was killing her, he called on the doctor and told him to terminate the pregnancy if possible.

“I don’t want a child again, I need my wife, I can’t stand seeing my wife draining away before my eyes, could you please do something?” he cried.

The doctor understood his plights, he assured him that he would do his best and also advised him to take it easy on himself because of his health so as not to aggravate what he is managing.

Ginika was still in the hospital in her third trimester, her condition worsened by the day, but all the doctor could do was to keep hope alive.

Ginika knew she might not make it, she made a move.
