“I heard Ephraim has been discharged, so sad that you didn’t see him before he left” said Ginika.

It sours Aina’s heart that she couldn’t see him before he left. They headed back home.

They were close to the house when Aina spoke up.

“I know you have a lot of questions to ask, you can ask me and I will sincerely answer them” she said.

Ginika held her hand and gave her a smiley look.

“who am I to judge you, I might do worse if I was in your shoes, I am proud of you that you let it out and move on without the pain you carry.” she said.

“You are such a beautiful soul” Aina complimented her.

A YEAR LATER.

They were through with their youth service, The ladies moved to the city to hunt for greener pastures.

Aina secured a job in a bank but getting a job was a great challenge for Ginika because of her health issues. She had worked with people and her crisis had been the major excuse used to lay her off work because of her inability to perform.

This affected her mental health and almost led her into depression. She decided to give it a last shot, she applied in a company and was invited for an interview. On the interview day, she had a crisis but managed to get to the venue. She was already late. The interviewer noticed her reaction and asked her what was going on with her and she made him realise it was a mere anxiety.

The interview went well and she was employed after thorough tests and verification. It was a big win for her because the company was one of her dream companies.

Few months after her probation period on the job, her responsibilities increased and it required her going on field work and travel from one state to another. It was challenging that she hardly had time to take good care of herself. Her health deteriorated gradually but she didn’t want to lose the job again, she kept going.

On this day, she already got to her client’s office just to perform her transaction and head to the next place. She was seated at the reception in front of the secretary waiting to get a pass to have access to the unknown client, she shook and sneezed repeatedly.

“Are you okay ma? The secretary asked and she nodded in affirmation

Still waiting at the reception, she slowly and unconsciously went down and passed out. The secretary ran to her and carried her, she called out for help.

” Help! Help!! Help!!” She screamed.

People ran out from their different offices to her rescue. The client ran out of his office too.

The client was Ephraim.

“What happened? Who is she?” He quizzed.

“She is from ABC company sir, she is to meet you in 30 min” explained the secretary.

” Let’s take her to the hospital please.” he exclaimed.

She was moved to the hospital where the doctors attended to her. She was resuscitated. Later in the evening, Ephraim visited her, at the sight of him, she shook.

“Ephraim?” She said.

He stared at her.

“I’m sorry, but have we met? I am not sure if we have” he said.

Ginika’s heart was broken, she held it and gave a faint smile.

“I’m sorry, you look like someone I know, never mind” she said.

“And his name is Ephraim too?” Ephraim asked.

“Yes, but never mind, I need to go now please” she said as she tried to pull off the drip on her.

“No please, you need the doctor to discharge you before you leave, he said you have a very serious medical issue and you need proper treatment, please let them do their job” he said.

“I can’t stay please, if I stay and my company finds out, I might lose this job and I don’t want to, please let me go” she pleaded.

“Why? Why should you lose your job because you are ill?” Ephraime asked.

Few minutes later, the doctor came in and saw how she was trying to leave her bed.

“You need to rest madam, you have gone through a lot of stress that your health is not strong enough to withstand, you need treatment, we can’t let you go” the doctor explained.

Ginika insisted she was leaving, all she had in her mind was her job. Ephraim offered to call her company to inform them about her health.

Ginika felt a bit hurt because Ephraim couldn’t recognise her and seeing him also added to the pain so she wanted to leave to avoid him.

Every effort to leave the hospital went abortive because the doctor insisted. It was getting late, she put a call across to Aina to inform her of her whereabouts. Aina felt concerned and located her, it was in the evening after work.

Aina met with the doctor in his office to know what actually went wrong and she was told Ginika’s health might not be able to withstand her job because of the stress that comes with it, she must resign if she loves herself.

She headed back to the room Ginika was in with lots of concern in her heart, she got in and met Ephraim there.

Their eyes met.

She exclaimed.

“Ephraim?”

He stared at her and called her name too.

“Aina, wow, this is you? What are you doing here? It’s been a long time” he said.

“Yeah its been a long time, I came to visit my friend Ginika ” this is her. ( pointing at Ginika on the bed)” she said.

Ephraim was shocked.

“Wait, this is Ginika?” He quizzed.

“Yes, you did not know?” Aina quizzed.

“Oh my God!” Ephraim exclaimed as he placed his hands on his head.

He was ashamed.

“I am so sorry Ginika, please forgive me, I only saw you once and during my admission in the hospital I didn’t know what was going on around me, my mum told me everything you did, unfortunately she didn’t have your number, I am so sorry Ginika” he apologized.

His expression showed regret.

” See, its fine, Ginika, you really need to take it easy on yourself. If this job is too strong for your health, please resign and find something less stressful to do.” Aina said.

Ginika was not happy, she wrinkled her face in sadness.

” How will I survive Aina, I have become a burden to myself and you, for how long will I have to stay this way, no helper nothing…”

Aina interrupted.

“No…no, Ginika, don’t see it that way, I am not complaining”

Ginika sobbed as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“For how long, Aina, for how long” she cried.

Ephraim couldn’t hold it anymore, he poured out.

“There has to be a way out.” he said and walked out of the room to the doctor’s office. He met him half way of the hall heading to see another patient.

“We need to talk doctor” he said.

The doctor led him to his office, they went in and he offered him a chair.

” Doctor, there has to be something you could do to help that lady, do you remember the accident I had a year ago? That is the lady that made sure I didn’t die, she has done more for me, it’s time I repay her, all expenses on me, just make sure she is fine He said.

The doctor had a deep breath.

“Mr Ephraim, I have been your family doctor for years and you could say that I can’t lie to you. Her condition is critical, she is a sickle cell patient and very few of them make it pass a particular age, very few make it to old age, we can only stop her from stressful activities and also recommend some medications to keep her strong, anything other than that is not promised.” He explained.

Ephraim became worried. He brooded for a while.

“But doctor, I once heard about bone marrow transplant, I heard it cures Sickle cell disease, can’t we work on that” he asked.

The doctor smiled.

“Yes you are right, but it’s not a small money, we are talking about $200,000 to $300,000, excluding cost of flight and others, aside that if after the operation there are no more donor cell, the stem collected from the patience would be given back to him which means the sickle cell would come back” he explained.

This got Ephraim more confused and sad.

“What is the age range that a sickle cell patient has?” he asked.

“Well, they still live up to 50 if they are well taken care of but that doesn’t mean they won’t experience crises once in a while and each crisis comes with a possibility of death” he explained.

This saddened his heart.

“Thank you doctor, please send me the bill but make sure you do everything to make sure she is fine before she is discharged” he said and left for the room.

Aina sat beside her and they focused their gaze on Ephraim as he stepped in.

” Aina, I am sorry you might not be able to continue with that job if you want to help yourself, you need a lot of rest and treatment, i already discussed that with the doctor, he’ll make sure you have a proper treatment before discharging you, don’t worry about the bill, I’ll take care of it ” he explained.

“Thank you Ephraim.” said Aina.

Ginika laid back on the bed and cried.
