"What do you do, Emma?" It was my Dad.

We were already at the table. Emma was sitting beside me, Mom across us and Dad at the head of the table.

"Oh, I'm a sales director at Unitedcare Group."

Both my Mom and Dad were stunned by what they heard that they stopped eating.

What's the problem with that?

"That's... one of the largest groups here in the US, Emma. And how old are you?" It was my Dad.

Emma looked to my side before speaking.

"I'm 27."

"Such a young age!" My Dad exclaimed.

"And you're a director, you say?" He continued.

"Yes, sales director. I just got promoted this year hence I moved here."

I didn't know that. Why didn't she tell me that?

You didn't ask. But still...

I was looking at Emma converse with my parents, mostly about business, the nature of her work, how she was managing it, and how did her parents react when she got promoted.

I was out of the conversation but Emma tries to include me from time to time.

She was squeezing my thigh under the table not to let me feel out of place as my parents were so engaged talking just about her.

I don't mind, actually, I'm happy. I'm happy that they find her interesting and they were amazed at her achievements at such a young age.

I remember when my eldest sister, Murry opens her own bakeshop. They were so proud of her. It was not a big business but it was so big of a deal for them that they invited all our relatives and friends and we had a big party to celebrate Murry's success.

And even when Anne was accepted into the accounting firm she's currently working with, they were so happy and proud of her.

They let them choose what they want to be when they grow up. Which school they want to go to, get their own apartment, and help them co-sign the lease whatsoever.

And here I am, about to graduate high school, still don't know where to go, still, no idea what I want to be, in short, I'm stuck!

I want them to be proud of me too one day, I want them to have a party for me too when I graduated college, I want them to celebrate me when I got accepted to the company I will be applying to.

"She was invited, Jen, right?" I was pulled back from my trance by my Mom's voice.

"What?"

"On your birthday, your Sisters are coming. I know Anne met Emma already and I want Murry to meet her too."

I found Emma already looking at me, I know she wanted to glare at me but couldn't because of my parents but I could feel the pain shooting in my leg from her hand squeezing it so tight.

I didn't tell her about my birthday let alone invite her.

"Yes, Caroline, of course, she invited me." Emma said covering me.

I smiled awkwardly at my parents. But my Mom knows better. She saw how I shifted uncomfortably in my seat when she asked me about my birthday. The way I look at Emma, apologetically and how Emma tried to cover for me.

She knows better. She's my Mom. She knows everything about me even before I tell her.

The dinner was done and my Dad excused himself as he needs to make a couple of calls while my Mom shoo us away to the living room.

When Emma knows that we were alone, she pinched me on my waist and she knows I couldn't make a noise because then, my Mom would hear us.

So I covered my mouth while I tried to avoid her hands.

"How come you didn't tell me it's your birthday next month?" She said angrily but emphasized each word.

"It didn't occur to me. I mean, I don't even think about my birthday." I tried to reason when she let me go.

"I'm your girlfriend, you should be telling me this." She was still annoyed.

"But how come you didn't tell me about your job?" I asked her back.

"You didn't ask about it."

"Well, you didn't ask for my birthday too."

Before I know it, her hands were on my waist again pinching me, the tiny pinch that was leaving a sting even after a few minutes it was over.

"That. Is. Different."

"Ow! Ow! Ow!"

"Birthdays are basic information, you should've told me about it."

I was jumping from the pain but she seems not to get enough as she still pinching me.

I know she'd rather slap me on my arm or on my thigh but she was afraid it will create noise and my Mom would hear it. So she went to a silent attack, which is more painful.

I finally caught both her hands.

"Emma, Stop. It hurts."

"Yeah, I know. I intended you to feel pain."

We were both startled when my Mom cleared her throat behind us.

"Oh, Caroline..."

"You know, I would do the same if my Girlfriend didn't tell me her birthday." My Mom winked at Emma and puts down the teas on the coffee table.

Emma laughed and my Mom laughed along with her.

"Kids, right?" My Mom told her as she seated.

"Yeah!" Emma agreed.

I was left standing, just looking at both of them agreeing with each other.

I knew my Mom knows it!

"Close your mouth, Jennifer. A fly could go in." My Mom handed the tea to Emma.

Emma cunningly smiled at me. It's like she found her ally against me.

"Do not wait for my husband. Emma. Drink your tea. The couple of calls that he told you, will take hours. He's talking to his Brothers and whenever he does, he'll finish around 10, 11 in the evening."

"Oh okay." She nodded at her.

"I actually want to speak to both of you alone." After a few seconds, my Mom became serious.

"Yeah, sure, Caroline." Emma placed her mug on the table while I seated beside her.

"Mom?" I called on her when she didn't speak right away.

"I like you, Emma..."

Uh-Oh!

"And, I think you are good for Jen, I do. I just have one request." My Mom's face was really serious, she was looking at both of us.

"Of course, Caroline. Whatever it is, tell me."

I could feel Emma's tension, the anticipation as my Mom is surely taking her time to speak.

"I don't want Jennifer having a sleepover at your place. I know, you just live next door and I know she's a grown-up, she'll be 18 in a month. But until she is under my roof, I want her sleeping here in our home every night."

I felt Emma sighing.

My Mom is so dramatic. The way she was acting, I thought it was something big, like a bomb that will explode in our faces.

And I know Emma felt the same.

"Of course, Caroline. That won't happen again, I promise."

My Mom smiled at her and went back to her normal face.

Oh, Mom!
