LUAN

Hmm, Id never thought that ill settle back into the normal life after experiencing the craziness of war in the past few months. War may be dangerous and disturbing but there’s this thrill and excitement of achieving glory that jiggles a man.

Mr. William’s farm has always been a memorable place for me but ever since he died, the place was starting to look boring despite the fact that most of my friends were there to keep me entertained.

After I came back with Mr. Toby, I was thinking that I would be bored like before but then things began to get more interesting ever since I realized that Mr. William’s daughter Elizabeth was now the owner of farm.

I’ve seen pretty white women before and I’ve flirted with some of them but they weren’t as enticing as Elizabeth. Unlike her father, Elizabeth was different in every way, She always looked serious and hardly ever interacts with the servants of the house, unless she wanted something. At first, I thought she was a racist but I later realized she wasn’t that much of a social person.

Immediately I first saw her, I fell in love with her. I doubted my feelings at first thinking I was just crushing on her but it was more than that. Every now and then I became more obsessed about her and I found myself thinking about her frequently.

My sister who knew about my obsession over Elizabeth tried effortlessly to stop me from pining over her, she even reminded me countless times that she was married but the more she did that the more determined I was over Elizabeth.

Following another man’s wife is wrong but what kind of man leaves a lovely wife such as this alone at home for months ? It’s either he doesn’t love her or he’s just torturing her emotionally, If I had a wife as lovely as Elizabeth I would be with her frequently and shower her with love and affection.

Although despite how interested I was in her, I decided to take it slow and steady. It would be awkward to tell her directly how I felt about her cause she would definitely dump me and probably fire me and my sister for my stupid act.

Considering the fact that we’re in a racist society, wooing Elizabeth is going to be quite difficult, so I decided to follow Mr. Toby’s approach ; The first thing he taught me about making a move on a woman was to show her signs / signals and the best way a man can do that is to use sweet praising words and occasional gift offering.

Mr. Toby’s approach almost never failed, he always manages to woo beautiful ladies using this method.

Showering Ms. Elizabeth with praises and warm greetings was the first step I took and it worked out quite well, Her reactions were quite blunt at first but then she began to smile a little and answer back sometimes, I upped my game a little by giving her some gifts. The gifts meant nothing to her but she collected it still and thanked me.

Gradually, I began to get closer by having small conversation about my war travels and cracking funny jokes I learnt from Mr. Toby, I also added a few lies to my story to make things look more interesting but I was careful not to go overboard.

Ms. Elizabeth found my stories quite appealing that she would sometimes call me out at night and entertain her by telling her the stories about the war. It’s not like she was fascinated about the bloodshed but she was just interested in knowing how I survived through the bloody massacre.

Although things were gradually going well for me, Most people laughed at my attempts claiming it wouldn’t make it around the corner, especially my friends who mocked me numerous times..

After I returned home with Elizabeth later that afternoon, I decided to go and visit some peer group of mine. Due to my involvement in the world war, I haven’t been able to keep in touch with some of my childhood friends especially Jeremiah .

Before Mr. Toby found me and my sister, Jeremiah and I were friends, we always played together and roamed about the streets of Johannesburg which was mostly filler with whites, we would find trouble by bullying the white kids and then run away so that we wouldn’t be caught.

After my parent’s death, We made less contact and grew further away from each other but we do meet occasionally to catch up on old times. When the second world war broke out, we rarely see each other like the old days, I tried looking for him but I heard that Jeremiah had hid himself so that he wouldn’t be forced to join the war to fight.

Later in the evening, I went over to Jeremiah’s family house to see if he was around and as soon as I got there, I saw the rascal sitting in his father’s lawn chair with a bandage wrapped around his right leg, He was sipping a bottle of whiskey when I approached him.

.

Luan The sly fox of soweto !

.

Jeremiah The Lion of war. I knew Hitler’s bullets wouldn’t kill you. Look at you shining spotless.. No injuries or scar on my manly bust.

.

Luan I wish that were true.. I have one wound though.. Look at the side of my ribs (raising his shirt)… I was scarred by a machine gun bullet.

.

Jeremiah Hmm! You’re brave indeed. How close are you to ending this senseless war?

.

Luan I really don’t have an answer for that… It’s good to see you Jeremiah.

.

Jeremiah It’s good to see you too.. Sit my friend.. Have a drink.

.

Luan I’m fine.. I don’t need a drink.

.

Jeremiah Come on man.. You’re a man.. Take some. (Passes bottle of whiskey)

.

Luan No.. Please I’m full.

.

Jeremiah Okay… Suite yourself..

.

Luan So how did you get this bandage?

.

Jeremiah It’s just a cover up.. I even had to apply palm oil to make it look real.. They can’t drag an injured man to war.

.

Luan (laughs) Oh Jeremiah.. You’re a coward. A big one.

.

Jeremiah Who wants to die young? I haven’t gotten married yet. I still haven’t tasted the fruits of a woman or felt the warmth of their soft skin. There’s a lot I have to do first before I die.

.

Luan Just imagine if everyone were to be like you, Hitler would have rule over the world. We have to fight for our lands. This is our war.

.

Jeremiah NO!!… The White men brought this war on our doorstep.. I brought the guns and bombs to our shores.. Our people were leaving peacefully before this white pigs came to us.

.

Luan Well, you should blame our forefathers for letting them stay.. I can’t believe they used cheap toiletries to fool and buy off our ancestors.

.

Jeremiah No.. They manipulated their minds with their white magic… But now their time is up.. We will soon send them away.. Let them go back to their lands.. We don’t need them.

.

Luan Really? Then how come you love the chocolates that you received from the late Mrs. Beatrice.

.

Jeremiah Well, Mrs. Beatrice was a nice woman but that doesn’t change what they did to our people. They must leave. They’ve corrupted our people.

.

Luan Oh please Man.. Stop accusing the white man as if he’s a devil.. We Africans too are as corrupt as the white man.

.

Jeremiah What’s with this talk, Luan? Are you choosing the whites over your own people?

.

Luan I’m not picking sides.. I’m just saying you should stop putting every fault on the white man.. Look likes just forget about this topic.. Let’s discuss something else.

.

Jeremiah I heard you’re interested in a white woman.. Is it true?

.

Luan And how did you know that?

.

Jeremiah Gossips and rumors.. And the funny part is that she’s your late boss’s daughter?…. Is it true?

.

Luan Of course.

.

Jeremiah By the gods Luan… You choose a white B–tch over our lovely sisters.. If it’s white p—y you want, you could have just asked… Mrs. Erica will be more than welcomed to have you, or Rebecca.. I heard that she gives good tips to men that pound her really good into the mattress… Dolores might be a..

.

Luan Enough… I know of those three sl-ts more than you. But it’s not because of lust I’m going Elizabeth… I love her.

.

Jeremiah (spits out whiskey) LOVE? WHAT?… You’re in love with a foreign? The enemy of your people?

.

Luan No.. Elizabeth isn’t like that.. She’s special.

.

Jeremiah My goodness. I see you’ve been influenced too much by the western lifestyle.. I understand Elizabeth is a stunning woman but what makes you think she’d be with you.. Isn’t she married?

.

Luan That’s none of your business.

.

Jeremiah What about Sara? She’d make a good wife.. She’s beautiful, she’s well shaped, she’s hot in every context.

.

Luan Well.. I’m not interested in her.. I’m only interested in Elizabeth.

..

Jeremiah I’m surprised… Honestly, I never expected this from you. Just remember once this war is over.. The whites will be pushed out of lands.. It’s time for us Africans to govern ourselves.

.

Luan Maybe but that doesn’t mean that things will be better.. I’ve traveled to a lot of places and things don’t stay the same.. Change is dynamic. If you’ll excuse me Jeremiah.. I need to go back to the farm. Have a good evening. (Leaves).
