(Two months after Ebere was born…..)

Obiageli; (bathing little Ebere and noticing a strange mark right on top of her nose)….Chim what is this again kwanu?…

Odogwu; (holds the baby and closely examines the baby)…Chineke nna..(shakes his head and hands the baby over to her mother)…wait make i go call your mama make she come see this one..maybe she go fit talk wetyn dey bring this one..( makes for the door)…

(Few minutes later, Obiageli’s mother Chinwendu, a local birth attendant rushes in due to the urgency of her son-in-law’s tone)..

Chiwendu; Nne (pet names for daughters which can also mean “mother” in the ibo dialect) Ogini kwanu? y u come dey put fear fo ma bodi? Eh? Oby? (She asks moving towards her) wetyn una dey do Eberem?

Obiageli; (hands over the baby to her mother) Nnem oma, see her nose…she wetyn dey grow dia?…

Chiwendu; (looks closely at Ebere) maybe na growth be this..na to cut am put am salt, so e go quick go naaa…na small thing be this…make she grow come before we cut am..(then she begins to rock ebere calling her sweet names whilst playing with her) baby mummy, mama ma, Olaedo, Ego-oyibo, Asampete, Asa-obodo-oyibo…

(Lights fades out on them…)

(That same night…)

Obiageli; leave my baby, leave my baby, leave my baby!! Don’t touch my baby, don’t touch my ebere…..

Odogwu;(shakes her vigorously to wake her up) Obiageli, Obiageli wake up! What is wrong with this woman?? Oby wake up!!

Obiageli;(finally wakes up crying) Nna anyi please tell them to biko leave her for me…

(Odogwu moves close to comfort her, already thinking of going to see the Ezemuo the very next morning)..
