I stared at Sandra, hoping and praying she would begin to laugh and say she was joking, but her face remained straight as she kept narrating how she had found out the truth about the job.

“Well, I was picked up by Mr Godwin from underneath a bridge where I hawked whatever fruit was in season. I have no home, and as for my family, they all died five years ago in a fire accident while I was in JSS3. I’ve lived under the bridge since then while sincerely hoping for a miracle. When Mr Godwin picked me and told me of this opportunity, I knew it was too unrealistic. No one pays you as much as 150,000 per week as a s*x worker, so when I was given the contract to sign I decided to read it. The lady there… what’s her name again?”

“Janet,” I said while staring at her incredulously.

“Yes, Janet. She tried persuading me into not reading the paperwork with the excuse that it was too big. I know how dangerous it is to sign a contract without reading through, so I thought up an idea. I asked her to go get me a drink of water and some food as I was very hungry. While she was at it, I skipped through the pages, and found it. There written in Bold red letters at the middle of the paper the words showing I was signing over my entire body over to Mr Godwin, and if I ever refuse to be in his service any longer, he had the right to do with me as he wants,” Sandra explained.

“And you signed it?” I asked, surprised.

“You think he’ll let me go tell the whole world what I saw? He would do away with me.”

I almost fainted. As I sat slowly on the bed, It dawned on me then what Godwin had meant when he had said it was a pity I had refused to work for him for more than six months.

“What do we do now? My family is currently in Godwin’s hands. What do I do?” I asked Sandra, feeling stumped at how stupid I was.

“We do nothing. They’ll kill us if we try any sudden escape. We have to stop this business from ever running again. We have to Kill Mr Godwin…”
